Report from the Tire Store

Today I had to buy new tires for my wife's car, so I went to Firestone and bellied up to the bar. (Okay, the counter.)

There was a female soldier in there paying for her tires. The counterman asked her if she "went to see the pResident last night." No, she had something to do that was more important than seeing the pResident.

The guy put this real sarcastic tone in his voice and asked, "now what could be more important than seeing the pResident?"

"I had my nails done and bought a new lipstick." The guy just fell out laughing. He then said going in and taking a forty-minute dump would also have been more important than going to see the pResident.

Having confirmed that they were all liberals, I then asked them about things like the DSM, 9/11 and Afghanistan.

On the DSM: the counterman didn't know what it was. The troop said everyone in her unit knew what it was and were really pissed off at Bush and Blair, I'm here to tell ya. (After we explained the DSM, he looked up: "Yeah, he'd do something like that. You're not just supposed to run around starting wars.")

On 9/11: the troop thought Bush just got really lucky. The counterman admitted that he didn't think Bush was directly responsible, but that if he was, he had plenty of time to have it set up. "He was inaugurated on January 20? And the building fell on September 11? That's more than enough time to plan and execute."

On Afghanistan: the troop thought that was a good war. The counterman wondered why we waited as long as we did. "Hell, if they could make up all that shit about Saddam and invade over it, they could have invaded over the Taliban without making up a thing."
