A while back, I posted that my brother is getting out of the Navy. He found out in February, after coming back from his first deployment. Bells and whistles went off in my head immediately, and several people here thought I had every reason to worry. He did ROTC in high school, was battallion commander his senior year. He went to college, paid for by the Navy, and got his degree. Then, he went to nuke school and sub school, and then on to a sub. After the deployment, the captain told him that he didn't complete all necessary quals while deployed, and that there were serious concerns about his ability to lead. He was told that he would be receiving an honorable discharge, and has been working in an office on base ever since.
He called tonight to tell me that he's finally gotten his orders, and so he now knows when he'll be getting out. I reminded him, again, to be sure to resign his commission, so he didn't end up like the old guy I saw on 60 Minutes, sitting out in the desert on a tank. He tells me that he has to do two years Individual Active Reserve.
Does this mean that they could flip him to Army and send him to Iraq? He has talked of the Blue to Green program, trying to convert Navy personnel to Army, and said that this was presented as an option (not one he's the least bit interested in). He doesn't think he'll get called up, despite what I think. Of course, he was raised in a bubble, and thinks I'm wrong. Am I?
