What can I do on the 4th?
What can I do on the 4th?

Stand on the corner and shout, "Give me liberty or give me death!"

Or, maybe better, "Give me back my freedoms!"

Well, unfortunately I can't really do either of these. You see, I have to be a little careful.

I am a newly elected city official. I have an agenda to increase citizen participation. My agenda can only be furthered with the support of the other officials (elected and salaried). So for at least the next year I have to keep a clean profile. I can certainly express myself (they all know I'm a Democrat and they know I'm progressive). What I can't do is come off like a crackpot.

So, I ask you, "What can I do on the 4th?"

2. I'm temporarily "apartment-bound".
What I plan on doing on that date, is posting the following on my union BBS and listserves: http://forum.wgbh.org/wgbh/forum.php?lecture_id=1600

JFK Reads the Declaration of Independence
John F. Kennedy, former Senator (D-MA)

Listen to an archival recording of Senator John F. Kennedy reading the Declaration of Independence in its entirety, which was made exclusively for New York radio station WQXR's 1957 July 4th observance.

Most will appreciate it, but there are a few RW-Whackos in my union who will no doubt get their snout out of joint over that.

3. Thanks for the link, pnorman. . .
I've made it a point to read the Declaration of Independence each July 4 for the past 30 years. I look forward to listening to one of my favored presidents read it to me this year.

5. I have no idea, as I'm running Win XP at this end.
But when I hit the "listen" button, I'm asked if I want to save it or open with Real Audio. I have NO Linux "smarts", but I imagine plenty here do. Hit that audio button yourself, and you may be surprised. If it DOESN'T work, let others here know what flavor of Linux you're running.

7. I'm out of my league tech-wise,
but I got the impression that if you have Real Player installed, it should handle that file with no further action on your part. And I'm pretty sure that free versions of Real Player are available.

If all else fails, why not email that website? It's hard to imagine them making all that good stuff available ... but ONLY by jumping through a lot of hoops. That's not a geek site where that sort of thing is considered 'cool'.

9. Go to a Democratic Group barbecue?
Go out to your Town Square and shake hands with as many people as you can with a "proud to be a democrat" t-shirt and thank them for their vote? March in the Parade?
