6. And that is how we prove there is no liberal media

Lets face it...The Republican Party, their corporate masters and individual donors have plenty of money to start a "Conservative News" channel.

They don't do it. Murdoch did it with Fox News, but if the Rest of the media was truly Liberal the right would be aligning their powerful and wealthy interests to "rebut" the Left-wing slant of CNN, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, etc.

They don’t

Meanwhile, Liberals are ACTING. We aren't just bitching about a media controlled by our opponents; we are showing there is real exigency in this problem by trying to get an ostensibly non-Conservative viewpoint focus on the news.

We have this thing and we had Al Gore out there trying to get a channel started. That’s the proof.

The Repukes have done nothing about the “Liberal Media” except bitch about it. If it was a real problem they’d have acted by now, just as the right always does. However, the media is BETTER for their cause because so many are brainwashed that its Liberal that anything negative about Republicans can be dismissed as “biased”. It’s a form of subtle, covert propaganda.

Everyone who watches FoxNews knows it’s a right-wing propaganda ministry. Ergo, it’s NOT effective. However, if “Liberal” CNN promotes right-wing talking points they must be true because the Liberal media wouldn’t just do “that”, without those talking points being factual.

120. No corporations backing this?
Of course they are and they will mold it.

We are already complaining about Air America being too watered down.

The most liberal shows being shunted to less popular hours.

We really only ourselves have to rely, to get the real news to each other and to the rest of America.

61. Perhaps this $50 donation will do more than in their hands than the UN...
I usually donate to the UN every month, but their complete lack of movement over Sudan and Zimbabwe has really worn thin on my support. I think from now on I'll divert the funds to this network.

Even though I don't watch television, perhaps this network will spotlight their foot shuffling and snap them back to the reason why they exist.

On top of that, you're right, not only the American people need this network, but all people.

8. Okay, but can I watch online streaming with my dial-up?

I don't have cable, so I only get seven stations on my TV. I spend most of my time online and sometimes listen to AAR. And if I can't access it, would most people in the world be able to? I'm a very low income American, and that still puts me in the top 10% of world wealth because I do have a TV, a computer, running water, electricity, etc. There are a whole lot of people with one TV for the entire village, and only a generator to run it. If they had to choose between us and Al Jazeera for the hour or two they can afford the fuel for the generator, why would they choose us? That's a very impressive list of sponsors, but superficially, it doesn't look all that diverse to me.

(And I'm still supporting IWT, but I think my questions are legitimate.)

(right-clicking, saving them to your machine, and then starting them from there.)

With regard to Al Jazeera, that is primarily intended for an Arabic speaking audience while IWTNews is primarily intended for an English speaking audience.

Shouldn't all news be liberal:

liberal

adj 1: showing or characterized by broad-mindedness; "a broad political stance"; "generous and broad sympathies"; "a liberal newspaper"; "tolerant of his opponent's opinions" 2: having political or social views favoring reform and progress 3: tolerant of change; not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or tradition 4: given or giving freely; "was a big tipper"; "the bounteous goodness of God"; "bountiful compliments"; "a freehanded host"; "a handsome allowance"; "Saturday's child is loving and giving"; "a liberal backer of the arts"; "a munificent gift"; "her fond and openhanded grandfather" 5: not literal; "a loose interpretation of what she had been told"; "a free translation of the poem" n 1: a person who favors a political philosophy of progress and reform and the protection of civil liberties 2: a person who favors an economic theory of laissez-faire and self-regulating markets

89. It could be either
Liberal is kind of a strange word in a sense, and that is why I don't really care for it to describe myself. When you are talking with an economist the word "liberal" means someone who supports a hands-off free-market approach to trade. When you are talking to a political scientist it could very likely mean somebody that is opposed to free trade policies, and instead wants strong protections for workers rights and the environment over profit.

These are two very different meanings, and that is why the word "progressive" is really a much better term than "liberal" to describe many people on the left.

43. Recent Press Coverage of Independent World Television
link to original article:

http://www.iwtnews.com/press

La Presse (Montreal) June 22, 2005 L'information à but non lucratif
"Une nouvelle chaîne d'information internationale est en gestation. Au nom de l'intégrité journalistique et de la «vraie» information, elle ne sera financée ni par les grandes sociétés ni par les gouvernements, mais par les téléspectateurs eux-mêmes."

Variety June 22, 2005 Vidal keen on news
"It was a tight squeeze inside agent Paul Alan Smith's BevHills high-rise for 'An Evening With Gore Vidal.' Some 200 guests, including
Mace Neufeld, Roger Corman, Haskell Wexler and George Schlatter, crammed in to hear Vidal talk about what ails the world and how a few Canadians could make a difference."
Variety June 22, 2005 New TV news net gets coin:
Upstart taps online resources to raise funds
"Independent World TV (IWT), a new TV news network, is poised to launch in a bid to provide independent and unbiased reporting around the world."

Hollywood Reporter June 21, 2005 Nascent IWT net would rely on subs
"In the next few rounds, Paul Jay is taking on such U.S. news-gathering giants as Fox News and CNN by launching in 2007 Independent World Television, a global news network funded by supporters, not corporations or commercial advertising. He was in Los Angeles Monday to attend a donor party hosted by Gore Vidal at the home of agent Paul Allen Smith."

Guardian Unlimited June 20, 2005 An antidote to corporate television "Independent World Television (IWT) plans to create a news network that will counter a corporate media culture that has become infamous for placing profits above the public interest. The mission is to convince an ‘internet army’ of half a million donors to contribute $50 each to secure the $25m that the network needs to fund its first year of broadcasting. It is a big ask. The network will take no commercials, sponsorship or government funding."

MIT Technology Review June 17, 2005 DIY TV
"Most discussions of citizen journalism assume that the Internet is the best medium for people who want to come together to produce news stories. But a new media company has a vision that's more, well, visual: it hopes to bring the concept of citizen journalism to television."

Eye Weekly (Toronto) June 9, 2005 News without borders
"The fundamental problem with news is that the most obvious hypocrisies are covered as if they're proper news stories," says Paul Jay, a documentary filmmaker and television producer who is out to radically change TV news. "There's a lack of real substantive content in all of our broadcast newscasts."

Toronto Star May 30, 2005 Idealist's grail:Network TV beholden only to the public.Paul Jay intends to "change the economics of journalism." The Toronto producer is a man on a very big mission.... He's "running to meetings, raising dough, making allies" — all to build Independent World Television, "the world's first global independent news network," to beam it out to the English-speaking world.... Jay's mantra? "No corporate ownership. No corporate underwriting. No government funding. No commercial advertising."

This could be the beginning of a new era, one where the corporately compromised media begins to feel some heat. And hopefully brought down it would be justice for their complicity in lies for war and the attempts at destruction of hope for millions around the world.

54. What I thought to be very compelling was..
J-pop:
Citizen journalism from around the world. Citizen reporters upload video to our media center, where our professional editorial board vets their work. The best appears online and on TV. JPop pays for accepted pieces, develops emerging talent, and amplifies the growing citizen journalism movement.

Now, people who study and train to be journalists can create real journalism. This sounds like it will give aspiring independent reporters a chance based on the content and truths.... What a wonderful opportunity it will be.... And most of all it will allow for a good variety of scope.

It must happen.

Even though I do not watch television I believe in this. That last bastion of liberal media, NPR, has gotten so watered down that they go out of their way to be "fair and balanced." The problem - they get funds from the CPB and the government.

The media needs to be truly independent in order for it have any shred of credibility.

One note though: Can this post be made shorter, maybe links to the info on the original sites?

war in Iraq showed too much of a bias even though I am in that camp. I worry it will end up being a network that just preaches to the choir and middle of the road people and conservatives blow it off as biased. I plan on giving money but I am going to write them about that.

Since we don't have that now--we need a network free of corporate control. I am sure it will not be perfect. Obviously, IWT will have a liberal/left slant. But it is still a great leap forward.

This is a very big opportunity--If we don't develop alternatives--democracy will die.. We cannot let that happen.

111. totally cool

Someone should make sure they are hip to the need to provide dial-up users with low bandwidth content (maybe audio only, podcasted mp3 etc). It would be PC and smart as well. But they seem to be very serious and I imagine they've considered it.

Yahoo/SBC is offering very cheap DSL these days, by the way. 1.5 Mbs for something like $22 a month, about what you pay for a lot of dial up. If you can get it in your area (and it runs on standard phone lines) give it a look. I just talked Earthlink into offering the same deal for my mom, by the way. (She didn't want to change her email address but needs DSL to watch lefty online media, since we all know what's on cable tv.)

Anyway, I like the look of this, there are great people involved, and I think it's a good use of $50 or whatever one can spare.

And is it just me, or is Laura Flanders freaking gorgeous? Sorry to wax sexist, but using her as the first talking head in the video was smart.

BuzzFlash Interviews

July 5, 2005

Paul Jay, Creator of Independent World Television, Intends To Challenge Corporate Broadcasters at Their Own Game

A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW

What we think is, if you don't do it on TV, it doesn't break through. But if we break through with it on television, then it makes it much more difficult for the rest of the television media to simply ignore these stories.

What television is doing, and to some extent the big-media print press -- is they're treating propaganda as news. They're allowing political forces and corporate forces to create a façade of how the world looks. And they're reporting on the façade as if it's real. I liken it to professional wrestling, about which I made a film. Wrestling press can talk about wrestling theater as if it's something real, even though everybody knows it's theater. Well, the same thing's happening here. If you try to step outside that as a journalist, they call you partisan.

When we heard of Paul Jay's project to start an international television news network supported by viewer donations, we said to ourselves, "Now here is a guy who is truly BuzzFlashian!" After all, BuzzFlash was started in May of 2000 with sweat equity, and it has been supported ever since by its readers -- 5 million monthly, these days, although in the first month of our online existence, we only had 34 readers a day. When we met Paul Jay, we became convinced he's got the professional expertise and righteous indignation to maybe pull this idea off. After all, we did, on the Internet. So, we have joined his advisory committee, and BuzzFlash is fully supporting his efforts. After all, he's a kindred spirit who cherishes democracy, the free flow of ideas, and social justice. You can find out more about his vision and unfolding plans at the Independent World Television web site: http://www.iwtnews.com/
