Okay, Kucinich supporters
I wanna know. Of all the candidates out there, Kucinich is the only one that worries me as a 3rd party candidate. Has he or has he not pledge to stay a DEM and support the DEM candidate, even if he loses the primary? Yeah, there's Sharpton and Braun - I'll ask their supporters later. I can't find anything on DK's site. Will he or won't he?

I wanna know now.

I just wanted to be reassured that DK did too, and couldn't find any documentation.

Still waiting. . .

27. Kucinich has been a Democrat forever, and a progressive forever
Unlike Clark, who just became a Democrat, and Dean, who still isn't a progressive, Kucinich has been a progressive populist Democrat since day one.

Dean is the one with a cult of personality and Clark is the one who's appealing to Republicans. Kucinich has more Democratic credibility than both of them put together.

14. Heis a Democrat....
As is every other candidate.

Do you question every other one of the candidates on this issue.

If it was Kucinich vs McCain. Who would the more centrist candidates vote for... I wonder.

21. Why do you worry?
Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 12:42 AM by FDRrocks
One vote right? The vast majority of DU (apparently)is ready to bash anyone who wouldn't vote for a Democratic nomine even if it was Satan with a (D) before his name. If Dennis votes his conscience, fine with me. But let it be shown that despite his beliefs, which the Democrats haven't exactly championed, he has stayed in the party.

The time is now. We can't have a progressive in now? The last great era for the Democrats did not start by a moderate view. It started with the Republicans fucking up majorly and the Democrats exposing that and putting in thier best candidate. The year was 1932.

edit: Also, on Sharpton and Mosley-Braun... seems to me any current Democrat that was going to leave the party, the would have done it during Reagan or Clinton, when the party was making the inward shift.

22. exactly about progressivism
I for one am sick of being told we cant have a progressive now. Now maybe this is a bad analogy you guys but I think its in a way right my English teacher last year told us growing up in the civil rights movement his grandfather always said "its not the right moment" and he said to his grandfather "well when are you gonna be ready" I dont know its not a perfect analogy but I see some simliarities. We cant wait and etc. I understand people are pragamatic but I think it is wrong that supposely we cant elect a progressive now. Well if thats the case overseas here I come and believe me the thought of having to immigrate doesnt appeal to me one bit but the way I feel sometimes about progressivism supposely not having a chance makes me consider it,

3. well
i would assume that he would support whoever gets the nomination. Him running as a third party would take votes away from whatever typical centralist democrat wins the nomination. however, i don't know if he has made a statement. Kucinich doesn't worry me on this issue however, its Dean whom you should be afriad of. He has enough democrat, moderate, and republican support that he may consider running as 3rd party. This would probably jeopordize the election and allow bush the victory. lets hope neither of them decide to do it!

10. Not worried 'bout Dean cuz
he has said, REPEATEDLY, that he's a Dem and would support whoever the nominee is. So don't see him as a 3rd party threat. What I can't find is DK asserting same. May be out there, just want a confirmation.

17. Dean has ALSO said he can't tell his "kids" to vote for the Dem

if he isn't the nominee. There have been several threads on this, most recently one by Will Pitt here in GD, with over 200 posts (if it's not still on p.1, go to older pages and look for the high post count threads until you find it.)

Full disclosure: I don't trust Dean, partly because of things he's said and done, partly from my gut reaction to him. Whenever I've gone against my gut, it's been a mistake. Over the years (voting since 1968) I've learned to trust my gut.

The Deanies here kind of hate my gut.

Sorry you have missed the many numerous threads on this. He was a DEMOCRAT, is a DEMOCRAT, and will be a DEMOCRAT...and he SAYS SO.

So get this out of your mind,,,and vote for him in the primaries and contribute to his fine campaign!! He is bring back the Democratic base to the party: labor unions and workers; environmentalists; people who genuinely believe that we should help the least of these, our brethren;a foreign policy of leadership and cooperation, not bullying and go-it-alone,,,

If this offends you that he is bringing in former Democrats and new voters with his policies, you are on the wrong web site.

11. He ruled it out months ago, in an interview with Ruth Coniff,

"The Peace Candidate" for The Progressive (a great magazine, by the way. )

http://www.progressive.org/april03/conn0403.html

Steve Cobble agrees. A longtime progressive political strategist who worked for Jesse Jackson, Cobble compares Kucinich to Jackson in 1988. He thinks he could do much better than expected, thanks to the support of people the politicos in Washington don't notice.

"The people who are dismissing Kucinich out of hand are the same people who are shocked by this big anti-war movement that has had such growth in so short a time," says Cobble, who is an adviser to the candidate. Like the late Senator Paul Wellstone, Kucinich is long on big ideas and short on glitz. He is neither tall nor telegenic, neither wealthy nor well connected. And, of course, there's his minimal national name recognition.

But no one voted Ralph Nader "Mr. Charisma" five years ago, Cobble points out, and Nader became a pop star on college campuses during the 2000 campaign. "Young people responded to Nader in 2000," says Cobble. "It was the ideas and the sense of integrity, not blowing in the wind. Dennis is going to give the same vibes."

That's where the comparison to Nader ends, however. "I have no interest in a third party candidacy. None," says Kucinich. "I want to do it the other way--bring third party candidates into the Party and get support in the primaries."
