Rockers Plan "Bands Against Bush"
(from an e-mailed press release, so no link...)

ROCKERS PLAN BANDS AGAINST BUSH EVENTS

Rock bands Sonic Youth, the Donnas and the Liars are among a host of musicians to join the Bands Against Bush (BAB) collective who hope to thwart the President's success at the 2004 elections.
The group plans to raise awareness for the movement which is focused on ousting George W. Bush from the White House next year and ensuring his bid for a second term in office is defeated.

Artists such as Good Charlotte, Green Day and NOFX have also agreed to record tracks for a compilation album entitled Rock Against Bush.

The BAB have chosen October 11 to stage events in New York City, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston, Olympia, Washington, Portland, Oregon, Paris, France and Dublin, Ireland.

Meanwhile Audioslave star Tom Morello, Billy Bragg and Steve Earle will be hitting the road this autumn on the Tell Us the Truth tour, which will coincide with campaigning for the eagerly-anticipated election.

2. that is fabulous!
None of those groups are familiar to me, a long-in-the-tooth elder, but praises to the current rock scene for this kind of action!

10. I don't know
I'd say it's just the right time. I mean individually a lot of artists were involved with the peace movement or with talking about the problems with the Bush Adminstation. SO now they are taking it to the next level, right before the election.

In fighting, the victor is not necessarily he who strikes first or he who strikes hardest, but he who strakes at the most correct moment.

Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention, or listening to the right music, but I was waiting for some music that lived up to the social commentary of the music of the 1960's. Sure, a few musicians spoke out, but did anybody use their art to send a message on the war? I'd really like to know.

9. Gee, I hope the Dixie Chicks headline...
.. some of those shows. It would be interesting to me to see who else enlists. These aren't hugely successful bands or performers so I think that it will get minimal exposure.

Now if some of the Lillith Fair gals or Peter Gabriel got involved.. even Madonna.. it would be a different story.

college and alt rock radio. Steve Earle is a massive alt rock/country crossover giant, The Donnas and Good Charlotte are front and center of the music scene right now, and Sonic Youth is a political flag bearer with my sons generation. And NOFX has been taking BUSH* on big time... check out their new CD. Green Day may be past its prime, but they are world known too -- and all these groups have the ability to provoke and encourage their listeners to get involved. This is a BIG thing - good on em all.

15. NOFX "Franco Un-American":
Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 01:24 PM by Melinda
Franco Un-American:

I never thought about the universe, it made me feel small
Never thought about the problems of this planet at all
Global warming, radio-active sites
Imperialistic wrongs and animal rights! no!

Why think of all the bad things when life is so good?
Why help with an ’am’ when there’s always a ’could’?
Let the whales worry about the poisons in the sea
Outside of california, it’s foreign policy

I don’t want changes, I have no reactions
Your dilemmas are my distractions

That’s no way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco, franco un-american

I never looked around, never second-guessed
Then I read some howard zinn now I’m always depressed
And now I can’t sleep from years of apathy
All because I read a little noam chomsky

I’m eating vegetation, ’cause of fast food nation
I’m wearing a couple of shoes ’cause of globalization
I’m watching michael moore expose the awful truth
I’m listening to public enemy and reagan youth

I see no world peace ’cause of zealous armed forces
I eat no breath-mints ’cause their from de-hoofed horses
Now I can’t believe; what an absolute failure
The president’s laughing ’cause we voted for nader

That’s no way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco un-american
Where can we go, franco un-american

I want to move north and be a canadian
Or hang down low with the nice australians
I don’t want to be another ’i-don’t-care-ican’
What are we gonna do franco, franco un-american

16. NOFX "American Errorist":
American Errorist:

It’s okay don’t be ashamed allow yourself a little hate, I really hate hate haters
A little hate is not so bad, when directed at injustice and evil doers
You can turn the other cheek, but don’t turn the other way, indifference is our biggest threat

Enemy of the planet we finally have a common cause a catalyst
A reason to forget about our differences and stand as a united front it’s up to us
To expose and humiliate the errorists, the american errorists, we’ll start with one
I know just one, the war has begun

17. NOFX "Re-Gaining Unconsciousness":
Re-Gaining Unconsciousness:

First they put away the dealers,
Keep our kids safe and off the street.
Then they put away the prostitutes,
Keep married men cloistered at home.
Then they shooed away the bums,
Then they beat and bashed the queers,
Turned away asylum-seekers,
Fed us suspicions and fears.
We didn´t raise our voice,
We didn´t make a fuss.
It´s funny there was no one left to notice
When they came for us.
Looks like witches are in season,
You better fly your flag and be aware
Of anyone who might fit the description,
Diversity is now our biggest fear.
Now with our conversations tapped
And our differences exposed,
How ya supposed to love your neighbor
With our minds and curtains closed?
We used to worry ´bout big brother,
Now we got a big father and an even bigger muther.
And still you believe
This aristocracy gives a fuck about you.
They put the mock in demockracy
And you swallowed every hook.
The sad truth is you would rather
Follow the school into the net
Cuz swimming alone at sea
Is not the kind of freedom you actually want.
So go back to your crib and suck on a tit
Go bask in the warmth of your diaper.
You´re sitting in shit and piss
While sucking a huge pacifier,
A country of adult infants.
A legion of mental midgets
All regaining their unconsciousness
