After weeks of Democratic assaults that President Bush was a nitwit for declaring "mission accomplished" in Iraq during his May 1 landing and victory speech on the USS Abraham Lincoln, the White House is bidding to set the story straight. The issue should be a simple one: Bush never uttered those words. "The president," argues communications boss Dan Bartlett, "said exactly the opposite: The mission continues." But Bush stood under a banner declaring "mission accomplished." Why? Bartlett says that the Lincoln's captain had the banner made up to thank his crew for the longest-ever carrier tour, not to declare the war over. "It is something the troops are really proud of," says Bartlett. "Of course they can hang the banner." But the picture was all the Demos needed. "On TV," he says, "they never play the bite of the president, they just show the image with the banner." Democratic polls show that the public buys their spin, which doesn't really surprise Bartlett. "Look, perception becomes reality," he says. "But the facts don't back it up."

If this was true (that they had nothing to do with the banner) they would have said this MONTHS ago. But they didn't because the whole "mission accomplished" p.r. stunt suited their needs. Now that more soldiers have died after the event; they have to cover their asses.

I mean come on! How many months has it been since that event? And NOW they feel the need to clarify the whole affair? Probably took them this long to come up with an excuse the sheeple might swallow.

What's next? Was it the Lincoln's captain idea to dress the chimp up in the flight suit and stuff a sock down his pants as well?

That's not just some bed sheet strung across the towers with painted words on it. It's a professional sign, probably printed on vinyl (one of the things we do at my job). Didn't realize aircraft carriers had a professional print-house on board.

We're suppose to believe that the administration delayed the return home for this carrier, made sure it was facing the ocean so that it would appear to be way off shore, and had the chimp play fighter pilot JUST so they could tell us "the mission continues".

Look at the size and professional design of that sign, (picture of it in Post Four). It's not simple block letters on sewn together white sheets, is it? Too bad we don't have any professional journalists/reporters in this country to track down and interview shipboard personnel to verify that this sign could not possibly have been created aboard ship, but was brought in by the White House/DOD for the occasion.

9. One piece of evidence that might clarify this:

If the captain of the Lincoln had the banner made to celebrate the longest-ever carrier tour, you'd think it would have been displayed when the Lincoln was actually finally allowed to complete its mission, at the dock in San Diego after being held up for 24 hours by Shrub's flight-suit pantomime.

Sailors from the Lincoln and their families should be able to confirm if the banner was still flying to celebrate their mission when it docked.

news photos of the Lincoln docking at San D.? If so, is the banner still there? This is easy to verify, anyway. Who put the banner up? When was it put up? Where did the banner came from? When was it delivered to the ship?

This isn't a funny, throw away news item. This could actually be a public "smoking gun". If they will lie about something as minor as this, what wouldn't they lie about?

18. I just don't "get" this.

It's one thing to lie about what you are going to do, or to lie about what your intentions were, but to outright lie about an event that can easily be proven is nuts.

What is going on here? Have they so totally stepped through the looking glass that they are no longer able to distinquish what the pupblic will bear? This is one of the scariest episodes in this whole terrifying administration. If they are to this point, then I think the idea of postponing the '04 elections or outrageously tampering with the voting results is no longer a "tinfoil hat" proposition. This isn't funny, it's scary.

24. Why would this story just be "reported" as if it were

a story in and of itself? A story that says "person A says 'black', while person B says 'white'", isn't a story. Who is lying and why - that's the story. But this "reporter" just leaves it at that! Why wouldn't he take the next, logical step and say, "person A is lying"?

Rove is a freaking genius! He even has DUers discussing whether or not that banner was part of the Carrier photo-op or whehter it was put there by the Captain. Come on people! Every detail of that stunt was carefuly controled. They put the "Mission Accomplished" banner there to convey the message that the US "mission" in Iraq was a success. Every detail of what we saw on TV from the carrier was carefuly planned, right down to where individual sailors stood so that their brightly colored jerseys would be in the right pattern.
