BBV: Uh oh. Internet security not the only problem in GA
Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 11:42 AM by Eloriel
And we thought we couldn't get our hands on one of those voting machines in Georgia. Boy, were WE wrong. We just didn't know where to look:

Volume III, Issue 18
(Current Issue -- to find this you have to click on Current Issue, then choose it from Contents on the right.)

Mr. Randy Evans was nice enough to forward the following letter to us. Given concerns about the hack-ability of these machines, making them readily available to potential hackers doesn't seem wise at all. Our hats off to the originators of this letter for addressing one of the many problems with the new equipment: it is clear the implementation plan made by the Secretary of State was not well thought out.

----
September 18, 2003

Cathy Cox, Secretary of State
State of Georgia
214 State Capitol
Atlanta, Georgia 30334

Dear Secretary Cox:

Thank you for September 16, 2003 correspondence regarding the Diebold Voting Equipment (DRE). As discussed at the State Board of Elections meeting, there appears to be consensus that the security of the DRE's is critical to the overall integrity of the system. A missing DRE for the State Board of Elections is tantamount to a missing ATM for a bank. The impact of this possibility is magnified by the absence of any independently verifiable audit trail as would exist with a bank (and in fact does exist for absentee ballots cast with DRE's). For that reason, it was reported the intergovernment agency agreement, as well as other provisions from the Secretary of State's office, require that the DRE's are secured.

Unfortunately, as discussed at the State Board of Elections meeting, it does not appear that the machines are being kept in secure storage as required by the Secretary of State's office. Indeed, as the discussion made clear, there are reports that the DRE's are sometimes kept in hallways, stairwells, courthouse rooms, and in offices. One report indicated that the local election official had the machines delivered to a county commissioner's office because the county commission either would not or did not provide space for storage. Needless to say, these reports are disconcerting, and raise serious questions regarding the integrity of any system based upon the secure storage of the DRE.

In the course of my visit to the Registrar's meetings in Savannah, several officials reported that which had apparently already been communicated to the Secretary of State's office - namely, that DRE's were not being kept in secure storage. Among others, the officials from Heard County reported this in the meeting. Following their statements, many others in the discussion reported that the DRE's in their counties similarly were not maintained in secure storage with further reports of storage in stairwells, hallways, and trunks of cars. I did not note their counties as this occurred during a group discussion period. In response to these reports, I requested at the Board meeting, and the Board agreed, to a survey to determine the location of each DRE by identification number, where the machine was stored, and the identification of all persons with access to the machines. This survey should confirm the scope of the problem and indicate whether it is widespread.

To assist with this effort, I have spoken with Cliff Tatum. In addition, please consider conferring with members of your staff in attendance at the meeting as the reports of unsecured storage of the DRE's was widespread, and the subject of some humor at the meeting.

Undoubtedly, as evidenced by the seriousness to which your office has treated the issue of DRE storage security in the intergovernment agreement, this is a matter of great significance. Hopefully, we will be able to discover the scope and extent of the problem. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

ARNALL GOLDEN GREGORY LLP

J. Randolph Evans
Member, State Board of Elections

something all americans should find out: Do You Know Where and How Your Voting Machines are Stored and Handled From Place to Place????

From what I've noticed - the voting machines in Miami are handled by the Cubans.

7. Okay this is the first time I've used this acronym: ROFLMAO!
In stairwells? Hallways? Oops, spilled my coffee.

By the way, this just in: King County explains the "famous for end-runs" comment in the Diebold Ken Clark memo.

They claim (in a Seattle Times interview no less!) that they were doing legitimate things (using an MS Access back door) like:

- putting in databases
- getting data to run election reports

Okay, for those of you who know how the GEMS system works, and the MS Access system, and oh, by the way, how the VOTING SYSTEM is supposed to work, isn't this another admission of guilt?

The front door, you see, is designed for "putting in databases." And the front door is designed for "running election reports." But they had to use the back door and the tamper-friendly MS Access for this.

Now we've got voting machines, top secret voting machines, mind you, popping up in hallways, stairwells, trunks of cars. Wait, I saw one being rolled down the street on a grocery cart! Stop that bag woman!

DIEBOLD: "We secure the hope diamond, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. And now we are securing your vote."

Bev

9. Cathy Cox is STUPID!
Honestly, she bends over backwards protecting Diebold and her 'investments', and then slips up big time; all the while she is full aware there are thousands upon thousands of activists and citizens contacting and/or discussing her office about the lack of security involving a product she swears up and down are safe and secure. She definately wins the moran award, and a place in the (Democrat or not) Top Ten Conservative Idiots.

I feel tempted to publish this letter on Scoop...

I wonder if the DU BBV Crew ought to give themselves some kind of name - under which to issue documents like this to the press... if we publish press releases on Scoop these days they seem to go straight to the top of the Google news selection re: Google... would be worth releasing the Volusia County 16022 memo too in the same way...

34. I don't know if that letter is authentic:
The poor quality of writing makes me seriously doubt it is from a top law firm, or a top attorney for the GOP.

I think it's a hoax, a diversion. I hope it isn't. But it's a pretty crappily crafted letter. Doesn't look like a real lawyer wrote it. Not in a 100 years.

29. Word is getting out about BBV; and the DU summary was great
Great timing. Today a councilwoman had a show on our Pacifica station and someone called in asking about electronic voting. The councilwoman didn't know enough about it, I guess, because she said that if you want to defraud the system you can do it with paper ballots just as easily. But the next caller cleared her up on that, talked about the blackboxvoting website and Diebold security problems. The councilwoman asked who owned Diebold; my call didn't go through in time but I sent her an email about Wally O'Dell the CEO and attached the DU summary along with the commondreams articles.

Go BBV activists!

This board is really useful.

Edited on Fri Sep-26-03 01:11 AM by JohnOneillsMemory
The infamous terrorist was asked what he was doing with one of the latest American electronic voting machines. He replied, "I heard that this was the most powerful anti-Democracy weapon invented but I can't even find the trigger!" He angrily claimed to have been cheated by his White House advisors as he was led away for crimes against humanity.

39. Another unrealistic expense
And ultimately THAT security would inevitablity be the easiest of all to crack in the dead of night, an underpaid security guard from some company with its own shady ties, a static hidden away security system.

In effect this should be disqualifying because the DRE can be pre-stuffed or rigged whereas your primeval paper ballot box is harmless until election day.

Where are the cost analysis, security, public service and rational people in the laughable con game?
