So...does anyone know the average number of resumes
someone has to send out to get a job?

My hubby is currently employed but seriously looking for a new job. Today he told me he has sent out 75 resumes so far this year and he has received 2 phone calls and not even one interview. He has had a HR person revise his resume for him and still nothing. What's it going to take?

Please don't reply to me that the marines are hiring!!!;)

1. I'm at about 250 without an interview.
Never had gone more than three or four without getting a JOB before.

2. That absolutely sucks!!
Do you have a job now?

What's even harder is the fact that because he is unhappy at work, many nights he is unhappy at home which makes our whole family life suck.

Good Luck to you :hi: I hope you find something soon!

but I didn't get paid for Feb and March until June.

But, on the bright side, I'm getting divorced! And unemployment "lost" my claim. It was still in their computer, but they delayed my first payment for 6 weeks and then only paid me half of what I was supposed to get.

14. That's not good.
How come they are claiming that the economy is growing and jobs are being added/created? Damn liars.

18. right now, I actually count as unemployed
I'm a rarity

I know dozens of people who are either chronically (over 2 years) unemployed or are severly underemployed.

Government statistics from the bushturdgang are about as reliable as their statements on WMD.

3. Is he sending them out online, or to real places
The internet is a vast abyss. Also, is he doing follow up calls?

6.  He is doing both.
He follows up on the ones he is really interested in. We used to think that we'd never ever leave the Chicago area, but now I think we'd go just about anywhere if there was a decent opportunity.

4. Is he sending them online?
If he is sending them online..he needs to be sure and insert all the "buzzwords" like team player, team building, critical thinking skills, etc..so that when they do a search that the computer hits as many key words as possible pulling his resume to the top.
It is also a good idea never to email resumes...fax or send snail mail. It is very easy to hit delete on an email, however, by law the employer has to keep applications/resumes on file for a certain amount of time (it escapes me now how long that is).
The other suggestion would be to find a headhunter.
Good luck to you.

8. Headhunters have promised him the world
over the last few years. Not one has come through for him. Last week one called from Dallas. Hubby was immediately testy but I told him he has nothing to lose. So he returned the call and they played phone tag for a few days and now the guy hasn't called back.

I will tell him about the key words though. Thanks

17. Let me give you a small list from what I remember as the main key words
quality control
problem solving
IF he is in mgmt he also needs to profile employee safety (stating responsible for employee safety). Also need to hit on responsible for discipline of employees.
achieving and surpassing desired quotas
implementing and monitoring new methods
multi-tasking
benefit corporate objectives
team player

Your internet resume should be wordier than your paper resume because of the fact that you need to make sure that you get all these hits--then when the employer searches, the ones that hit the most key words are the ones that pull up and thus are usually the ones that get hired.

5. I know people that have been looking for more than three years...
...unless he has to leave where he is now, this is not one of the better times to be looking. There are literally tons of resumes being sent in for every open job.

But, if he's really interested in leaving his current company, networking is the best way to go about doing it. Tell him to work through his friends at other companies by getting referred directly to the hiring managers. Going through HR at other companies will just get his resume lost.

10. You don't say what field he's in?
Try linkedin.com, this is especially good for networking if he is in a technical field.

also you should really think about tweaking your resume for EACH job you apply for. time-consuming but if you make it fit exactly, maximum result!

13. He is an engineer
for a tool & die company. He thinks the industry is dying. It has changed drastically over the past 10 years. Thanks for the link.

19. Mechanical.
I think he is facing situations where companies love his 20 years experience, but want to pay him entry level. Which is not doable in our family. We have 3 kids (youngest only 3) and I only work part-time a couple nights a week when he isn't traveling. I am seriously thinking about going back full time which I wasn't planning to do until our youngest was in school all day, but then there is the whole day care thing and I think I would wind up paying out almost as much as I was bringing home. I always planned on going back full time someday, but I thought it would just add to what we were making. Now I feel like it would be making up what we lost when he changed jobs a couple years ago and took a small pay cut.

23. It is dying.
My father was a tool and dye man.

Once he hit 45, it was over. No work. And that was 10 years ago.

I hate to break it to you.

BUT... engineers are still marketable. He needs to not only put in the "buzz words" but condence his resume. I had a friend who is a trainer re-do mine - it worked! I got five interviews in a week after sending out his version.

PM me - I'll try to help, but I cannot guarantee.

I've been laid off twice in four years, so I will do anything I can to help.

11. Besides my temp job
I sent around 300 since 2002 when I had to quit a job or risk a stroke from stress and medication. So far, nothing good and only had total 3 interviews.

22. Sorry to hear that.
I found out something else that is just sickening. I know someone who works for Kraft and she told me that they are no longer hiring Administrative Assistants. They are just going to use temps so they don't have to pay benefits. More profits=bigger bonus for top execs.

... many for jobs he was clearly over-qualified for, according to someone very close to me whom I know as well as I know myself. Degreed, no criminal or drug record, healthy, highly rated, personable, published, experienced in cross-disciplinary functions, and he was also a whistle-blower.
