People died today
Let us remember that and respect those that perished. Do not spin this for political gain, as that lacks humanity. Instead pray, remember or express your sorrow for the victims and their families. There will be plenty of time in the future to discuss why we are losing the war.

1. People die as a result of violence every damn day of the week
What ONE person calls "spinning" another might rightfully call insight into the senseless deaths of others.

Beyond this being (another) terrible event which shouldn't have happened... I'd say these shut-up posts have more than a touch of kneejerk Anglocentrism behind them.

30. 20 years ago, I visited London as part of a tour...
Edited on Thu Jul-07-05 11:52 AM by KansDem
As part of the package we received tickets to a couple of plays. Instead of attending with the rest of the group, I ventured out to sample London night life on my own. With the suggestion of a porter (he was Irish), I visited an Irish pub in a working part of London. It was there I sampled for the first time a "pint of bitter." I also shot what was called "European 8-ball." I challenged a couple of locals to a game and, after they left, I too was challenged by a new arrival. We played for pints in friendly games that were very reminiscent of the games played here in neighborhood bars. I also learned a lot about this "new game." Did you know that Europe uses smaller balls, narrower pockets, and that the balls are all either solid red or yellow with no numbers? (except the eight ball, or course). I marveled at the British accent of my competitor and wondered if the entire country was just as articulate.

Oh, I almost forgot. My competitor was a black man.

We played several games (it was a week night and there were not many customers so we had no challengers), before I needed to leave to return to my hotel.

I say this only because I saw many colors on the streets of London. And in the subway too. I understand there are many non-whites living in London. It is a very cosmopolitan city.

Now, you can make a generalization like the one in the subject of your post. I might even sympathize with your intent as I too experience the same kind of news reporting as you have in this country. But, I might suggest that since bombs don't limit themselves to a single ethnic/racial group when detonated in a confined environment like a subway system, you might lighten up a bit.

...not about the ethnic reality of London.

BTW it was the area around the financial district that was bombed. I suppose the kneejerk response could have just as much to do with that.

when the idiot oredered the invasion and occupation of Iraq. To not see this as a political issue is ridiculous. We can best show our respect for those that perished by working tirelessly to bring down the regime in DC, the regime that is responsible for the 500% increase in terrorist attacks.

When do we stop everything that we are doing to express our sorrow for the victims of the invasion and occupation?

13. If we take a break on the push for truth, then the bu$h regime
has successfully beaten us.
What about the American soldiers killed each day in Iraq? We don't stop and wait for that to end.
That is exactly what the right is trying to get us to think, that one can not question their power when in crisis.
We must never stop searching and questioning. That is how you honor those who lost their lives, both today and all the way back to 9/11.
I say a time of crisis is the very time that questions should be asked and scrutiny stepped up.

Yes we should remember and pray for the families of those who were killed today.

that does not diminish the personal loss and horror--I hope my friends in London are well

I grieve for those who have suffered unimaginable loss today.

If we wallow in the tragedy while the enemies of humanity are capitalizing politically--as they did within MINUTES following 9-11 and as they already are doing now--we will be doing our shared cause a disservice

34. dammit, what about the people the U.S. and Britain are killing...
...EVERYDAY? They don't deserve the same degree of sympathy? TEN TIMES as many people died in Iraq yesterday as were killed by bombs in London today. Where were your tender sympathies then? Was their suffering somehow less meaningful?

People will continue to die until the tide of outrage sweeps these pigs from office and changes the way we treat the rest of the world, and in particular the poor and non-white part of it. Setting aside my anger over my country's crimes for a day is NOT the way to show sympathy toward ANY of the victims of those crimes.

then we lack humanity

to sit around and disrespect the dead out of respect for the dead is disresectful

and it IS disrespecting the dead to try to get people to shut up and not counter the spin coming from the right wing on this

have a little humanity, get involved, BE ACTIVE

it is NOTHING but political fodder. Why are you trying to imply that people are saying that? And what is wrong with discussing the possible reasons that this might have happened, or the importance of our government taking responsibility in their war on terror? I would HOPE that people discussed these things after 9/11. If they didn't... they sure as hell should have.

31. Man, if you wait too long Bush and the republicans will define the tragedy
for us. Then we will be the victims of a new round of misguided, trumped-up reprisals. Widening war perhaps. With the 24 hr., instant, news cycle, there is, unfortunately, no time for such sentimentalism. You have friends there? Relatives? Or, you just feel overwhelmingly close? Turn off the computer and address your grief, administer your support.

But, our discussion here is part and parcel of our efforts to end the cycle of violence perpetuated by Bush's mindless aggression. It is out of respect for all human lives to be vigilant and resolved to hold those perpetuating the violence responsible, along with the actual perpetrators
