i was impressed with the people, the competence, there ....i dont know. just felt different. things well in place. i dont feel the same with our country. there was a truth in europe and especially england are experienced in this. i guess that is what it was. experience in handling this event

22. I was in the UK during the first Gulf War

and things were COMPLETELY different there. People over there know how devastating a modern war can be-- remember, they just had one fifty years before the Gulf War, and had also suffered many civilian casualties during the air raids of WWII.

When the initial Kuwait invasion started, everybody was very somber. The churches were packed with people praying for a quick end to the conflict. People bought and wore poppies in remembrance of the dead. They all said how dreadful it was that the invasion was taking place, and wanted all fighting to end ASAP.

When I came back to the US in Feb 1991, it was total cultural shock: morans wearing "commemorative" T-shirts with such witticism as "THESE COLORS DON'T RUN" on them, yellow freaking ribbons tied on anything resembling a poll, news conferences of convoys carrying unarmed men being blown up to the applause of those gathered. It was fucking sick, man. So much unrestrained jingoism made me physically ill, especially since I'd been active in the anti-war movement before Desert Shield.
