What army are we going to Invade Iran with again?
All this talk about invading Iran----we don't have the resources for that and it would take at least a year or more after a draft to deploy the newly trained army.

1. you're thinking one dimensionally.
ground troops are not the only way to invade a country.

10. So how else do you invade another country and control it?
We have very little control of Irag and Afghanistan now with troops there.

22. that's a different question.
you said with what army we would invade...I pointed out that invasion does not have to be with infantry.
You are NOW adding the part "and control it".

those are very different things, not that the neocons would realize that.

In their naivete and hubris, they assume everyone will just lay down and kiss their feet after we "shock and awe" them.

12. Disrupt the oil supply even further?
If a barrell of oil reaches $100 we won't be able to afford to invade Kentucky let alone Iran.

4. Halliburton could go out and hire enough unemployed people
Edited on Thu Jul-07-05 01:21 PM by wake.up.america
I am sure Cheney would be happy to arrange a massive contract on behalf of Halliburton to wage war against Iran.

"Oh,yeah you and whose army?"

5. According to rumsfeld on "Meet the Press" only a small fraction
of our military is being used right now, apparently we have plenty of people and unlimited resources to do anything we damn well please.

11. Well, GE Russert didn't take exception to his claims.
According to rumsfeld something like 15% of the troops are deployed, no reason for any "henny penny" stuff, the concerns are invented by "move on.org" or somebody.

6. Fire up the draft.
They'll have what they need in a few months. I'm sure they've been planning it for some time. They'll do whatever it takes if that's what they've decided.

23. No it wouldn't
It might take a year to PROPERLY train and equip the personnel, but that's only if you're worried about the soldiers in the field and their well-being. Obviously these constraints are irrelevant to the current administration. As such, they could probably get the draftees into the field within 12 weeks. After all, they believe all a grunt needs is a uniform and a gun and he's good to go.

7. Cut a deal with the insurgents, patch up Iraq like Afghanistan, ...
and move on to Iran and then Syria.

Or more seriously, expect a draft.

13. No draft needed...
Think about all of those announced base closures in America and Europe. More than enough personnel can be freed up to be turned into a fighting force.

21.  Equipment? We don't need no stinking equipment!
Paraphrasing that classic movie line: "Badges? Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!" In Rumsfeld's Pentagon, our soldiers don't need flak jackets, or blast proof SUVs, or water camels, etc. That's why our soldiers are told by their NCOs to write home for money to buy pretty basic protective/survival gear.

15. The troops might be there..in a surprising way
http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2005/06/17/facing_factsin_iraq?mode=PF

A former Pentagon official, journalist, and president of the Council on Foreign Relations, Leslie Gelb, a man with considerable political and military knowledge, came back from a fact-finding trip in Iraq talking about the ''gap between those who work there, who were really careful of every word they uttered of prediction or analysis, and the expansive, sometimes, I think, totally unrealistic optimism you hear from people back in Washington."

In a report to the council, Gelb was scathing about America efforts to train an Iraqi army. ''If you ask any Iraqi leader, they will tell you these people can't fight. They just aren't trained. And yet we're cranking them out like rabbits." As for plans to train a 10 division Iraqi army by next year, Gelb was scathing. ''It became very apparent to me that these 10 divisions were to fight some future war against Iran. It had nothing to do, nothing to do," with taking Iraq over from the Americans and fighting the insurgents.

when a former president of the CFR speaks i might not agree, but i DO listen..

19. Iran is going to be training the Iraqi army as of today's announcement
They are going to give a billion to Iraq in aid too.

I'd think invading them now would be more than a bit complicated...

24. Plus the increased threat to the Strait of Hormuz
Keeping that free of any disruption could be a full-time job by itself.

Strait of Gilbraltar. Suez Canal. Bab al Mandab. Strait of Hormuz.
They sound like answers to geography questions in a game of Trivial Pursuit, but actually represent the sequence of choke points that Norfolk-based ships travel through to reach the Persian Gulf.
...About 40 percent of the world's oil supply is transported through Hormuz, the only shipping channel in and out of the Persian Gulf.

Choke points are concern for Persian Gulf-bound ships
