"A construction worker bowed in prayer at the Kings Cross station in London."

Subtle, aren't they? :sarcasm:

1. Might seem so from here,
but over there it's just another subway stop.

I think you're reading too much into it.

2. I think it was intentional.
And I think it would have the same undertones in Britain as here. It's kind of difficult to ignore those white words above the praying worker.

4. Huh
Never thought of Cross that way. I thought, as a tube stop, it meant a crossing on a path. But interesting of you to read it that way.

6. Both meanings are in the photo.
But the one I had in mind is subtext, whether the photographer was fully aware of it or not. It's in the photo.

Why is that photo on page 1 of the NY Times? Why not one of the wreckage? It's meant to convey quiet heroism. It's propaganda, in other words.

Call me a cynic. I don't mind.

5. "King's Cross"...
traditionally, the "King's Cross" was a place of peace. A cease fire was a 'King's Cross'.

Now the photo really does have a deeper meaning, and it's a good one.

9. According to the local council, it was from a monument to a king
in the 19th century.

King's Cross was previously known as Battle Bridge until 1830, when a short-lived monument to George IV was erected at the junction of Euston, Gray's Inn and Pentonville Roads.

I was refering to the term "King's Cross", not to the location(s).

13. I thought it was one of the resting places of the funeral procession of
Queen Matilda in the 12th century, one of a series of "crosses" at regular intervals from the north - the final one being Charing Cross, and another being Gerrards Cross. Small monuments (crosses) were erected at places the procession halted.

17. Too close to Charing Cross, I think
And I don't think Gerrards Cross is one, either - Waltham Cross is. I think they were coming down from the north, roughly (Lincolnshire? I mean the compass direction, not the capital 'N' North).

19. Wasn't it near Shrophire, around there?
It's an area I'm very murky on.

But KC would have been a good processional resting place before the final approach; I know it's close, but they weren't exactly in a hurry.

20. Time to resort to Google
He wrote to Eleanor asking her to join him in the north, but she was taken ill on the journey and died in a little village called Harby in Nottinghamshire.

Edward was devastated and rushed back south to make arrangements for her funeral. Her body had to be taken back to Westminster in stages, and Edward had a beautiful memorial cross erected in each of the stopping places. In all there were twelve of these, Lincoln, Grantham, Stamford, Geddington, Northampton, Stony Stratford, Woburn, Dunstable, St. Albans, Waltham, Cheapside, and the best known of all, Charing, then a little village near Westminster and nowadays named after the cross, Charing Cross. Today only those at Geddington, Hardingstone and Waltham Cross, still remain.

So, my theory that King's Cross was too close is shot down, if they had one at Cheapside; but they did go through Lincolnshire.

He's a Revell 1/48 scale WW2 pilot... but they used identical figures for pretty much all the planes of that era/scale.

Now I'm going to have to look at the link to see what plane it says it is.

on edit...
It's worse than I thought... it's a MiG-15 figure (1/48 scale) adapted to a scratch built Ta-183

he was just taking a break from exhaustion or getting sick to his stomach, which would seem more likely under the circumstances? Rescue workers normally don't stop to pray in the middle of an emergency.

16. Hmmmmm
religious fundies haven't taken over the UK. King's Cross is just one of the places bombed.

I do not see anything untoward here, but given our media's shoving Gawd down our throats, if the pic was made by a NY Times photographer, I can't say you don't have reason for suspicion.

It seems an unusually informationless photo, given the subject, to stand for the event.

Hey, keep your religious loony fanaticism out of our lives! And how come this god didn't stop Bush falling off his bike the other day, if he's such a favourite?

Sorry, but we don't really go in for such vulgar displays of piety over here. Try Texas.
