Surfing through posts about Andy, I came upon WP's 'pretty upset' thread
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3672828 Fascinating stuff considering that Andy lost his fight. Sad too. Very sad. Most of us have dealt with serious illness or death, with ourselves or with others. It can be bewitching and frustrating trying to fathom the slim thread that animates us and causes us to exist. But what emerges from these dramas is the realization and awareness of our own inherent weakness and fallibility, as well as our own ignorance about the future and our ability to hold ourselves here and in one piece.
I find great satisfaction in all of our attention to Andy and his plight, both positive and negative. Too often a life enters and passes this world with little more than perfunctory encounters and miserable solitude. Do a search here at DU and you will find a chronicle of Andy's life . . . and death. It's complete with the type of drama that we all experience in our own lives and with those we are close to. We can see ourselves in his struggle to survive, his anguish, his expressions of thanks and regret.
So much of life is a mystery, it stands to reason that death is unfathomable. But, the realization that life is finite and may be short should give more importance to the little things we do and say. Hopefully at the end, there will be a crowd who can give a full account of our lives. Hopefully that crowd will be dominated by friends such as Andy had here at Democratic Underground.
