Get it through your thick heads, liberals...
Four WH press conferences after we learn of Rove's contact with Cooper, and not one question from the press corps. And still, liberals scratch their head and wonder, why is that? What a mystery!

When are you going to get it through your thick heads: THE MEDIA IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. THEY ARE YOUR ENEMY.

The media is not there to get the truth or hold our leaders accountable. They are there for Rove. It's time to recognize that fact.

9. I still don't think we get it...
I keep hearing excuses for the MSM: They suck up to power - why, then, were they so hard on Clinton? They want ratings - why, then, did MSNBC cancel its top rated show /Donahue/? It's all about money - why, then, did Miramax cancel distribution of the highest grossing documentary (F9/11) in favor of a flag-waving documentary no one's heard of? No matter what excuse we come up with, it doesn't explain why it only works to the Republicans advantage. Is it intimidation? Or are media conglomerates lobbying Washington with something far more valuable than money - air time?

Say it: the media is conservative. Plain and simple. They are all members of the GOP. No one's saying this.

13. To answer your question about Fahrenheit 9/11, Miramax cancelled
distribution because their parent company, Disney, got juicy tax breaks from the governor of Florida, JEB BUSH, and so was afraid the breaks would be rescinded. That's about money.

17. Many DUers still expect the media to repeat DEM talking points.
Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 04:47 PM by Dr Fate
DUers get angry whenever the media refuses to discuss the DSM, Gannon, Plame, etc.

Many of the same DUers get defensive when folks like me suggest that Dean, Kerry, Hillary, Obama, etc need to go on debate & interview shows and bring up these talking points.

We should blame "star" Democrats for not saying what we think needs to be said- it's silly to blame Rove/media at this point.

20. I agree to a point...
But I don't think they'd let Obama on to talk about Plame. They decide the topic and they pick a conservative leaning panel to best make the WH point. You'll see Safire and Novak on TV far more than any left wing columnist because the media wants to push the GOP agenda. You go on a show about how London bombings demonstrate the rightness of Iraq and bring up Plame, I doubt you'll get on TV again.

If DEMs are truly being censored on these shows, then why wont they talk about that fact on Air Amercia or somthing?

Prove it.

Does Wolf Blitzer or Judy Woodruff ban DEMs from saying certain things? Lou Dobbs? Olberman? Daily Show? Air America? Local news shows?

I'm not saying it will be easy to debate 3 right wingers at once- but its better than making excuses for not speaking up and then blaming the media.

29. What Dems...
On the rare occasions when a Dem is asked to be on a show, they ask the ones who we know aren't going to drift from the script. Those who do will not be asked on in favor of Lieberman. When someone does bring up something, they are usually challenged or corrected in a way Republicans are not, out of fear they'll get a call from Rove. After Chris Matthews dared to question Malkin about claiming Kerry executed an unarmed 13 year old boy, for the rest of the campaign Matthews had to have the lawyer who represented the Swift Boat Vets on as pennance when conservatives threatened to boycott.

47. Don't get me wrong...
I think you make a very good point. I just think the MSM decides the topic of the show, they frame the show in a GOP friendly way by asking, "Question of the day: did Kerry fake his war medals?" rather than "is Rove behind the Swift Boat Vets?" They'll ask on Novak far more than Krugman, and they'll almost never ask Michael Moore. And they tell them: we want you to come on to talk about this and this, and the ones who stick to the script get asked on again.

49. Simple: use your debate skills to steer the topic. Example:
Topic: The Iraq War.

DEM: "While we are on the subject of the Iraq war, I'd like to bring up this Downing street memo- which may shed light on WHY we are at war..."

Topic: "Moral Values"

DEM: "Since we are talking about Christian values, I'd like to mention this bizzare Jeff Gannon fella- is inviting a male hooker into the Whitehouse hundreds of times and refusing to say why really an example of Republican family values?..."

etc, etc, etc. Talking straight aint rocket science.

Kerry, Dean, Hillary, Obama, Reid could be on those shows practically anytime they want and no one is holding a gun to them making them stay on script.

We need to stop letting these guys define the issues and start talking about whatever we want.

Fact is, we need bold, new, yet SIMPLE tactics.

74. I totally agree...
I think Dems should come up with talking points that everyone hits on, and anyone who goes on cable without hitting on those points should be shunned in whatever way possible. If cable news refuses to put our guys on after they stop being their monkey and frame the debate, then it will be that much more obvious who their masters are.

The problem is this requires a cohesive Democratic party.

76. Right- then they could go on other shows and say "I was censored on CNN"
Surely Air America or the Daily show or even many local papers & local shows would allow them to say:

"You know what- I was on CNN last night, and when I tried to bring up the DSM, they censored me and banned me from their shows- how about that?"

Sort of like what Rove did by framing Dan Rather- but much more honest & truthful.

Tell me what holding Halliburton accountable will do for our party?

54. You make a mistake
In classing the whole media as one entity, that can be conservative or liberal. Its not the case. Oberman, for instance, has brought up a lot of stories that are important to liberals.
The fact is the media is a group of people with different biases, and these people recieve pressure from different financial, and yes, political entities. (Rove) Yet there are breaking points, where the importance of something or financial liability becomes bigger than the threat of reprecussions from reporting it.

While the MSM is a corporate whore, she is first and foremost a whore. She goes where the the eyes are because that's where the money is.

We create interest by doing exactly what we are doing and eventually, the MSM, starved for content, will shine on us because they have to.

We're stealing their precious target demographic. The Internet has taken over television as a majority source for entertainment and news among youth:

Neither does the lady on the bus or the dude behind me in the grocery line.

Try it yourself- ask folks at work who he is, then come back and tell me it was covered by the media.

Gannon got minimal to zero coverage compared to Durbin/Nazi, Swiftboats, Newsweekgate, Schivo, Condit, Runnaway bride, Wacko-Jacko, etc, etc.

Of course Moore is rich- the question is that if the media is motivated by money rather than politics, then why wont they give Moore his own show- which would surely bring in plenty of $$$-

"Monica style" coverage of Jeff Gannon would have made them money too.

50. no, it doesn't
The media wants to get paid. The people that pay the media are advertisers. Advertisers tend to be corporations that are owned by people that want to make money. Those advertisers want to advertise to the largest group of buyers. When an advertiser recieves thousands of complaints/kudos from those buyers because of programming, they listen and can change their ideological stance on a dime.

59. Why are you defending the MSM?
THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND. THEY ARE YOUR ENEMY.

62. I'm not defending the MSM
I'm fighting your obvious sense of hopelessness.

We have to persevere in our fight for what is right. Truth will out if we don't let it die.

60. They how come NO ONE I talk to knows who Jeff Gannon is?
...but EVERYONE I talk to knows Terry Schivo, Dick Durbin, Gary Condit ,"Monica" ,Swiftboat Vets, the "Dean Scream", etc, etc.

What alternate reality do you live in where Gannon is a household name like all the other scandals I mentioned?

My claim that these stories are being ignored, compared to celebrity gossip or stories that make DEMs look bad is true.

The media even had to admit that they were not covering DSM as much as they should have- remember all their excuses about "old news" and "we could not find anything on the wires"...?

It's not about covering them "as much as I want"- it's about covering them as much as they cover anti-DEM stories. If they did, then I could not claim bias.

66. Well then it's your responsibility
to make sure people know.

Look, I get what you're saying. But if you think that the blissfully ignorant masses are some kind of new phenomenon, then you are living in a dream. People are fickle. They forget. They like bright shiney objects and beautiful celebrities. It's our responsibility to make the important stuff sexy.

69. Fine. When can you book me on a cable news show?
The "blissfully ignorant masses" know about Schivo, Dean scream, Swiftboats, Monica, Condit, etc, etc etc. Why- because they saw it on TV over & over & over.

They DONT know about Gannon & DSM cuz it AINT on TV. PERIOD.

Perhaps we can agree that its the job of Democrats with media access to spread the word since "the TV" refuses to cover these stories.

70. As I said
Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 06:59 PM by blogslut
...you are missing the obvious.

The television networks are losing their viewership to the Internet. At last count, there were at least 300 million online in the US alone. I don't have any stats but I bet you dollars to donuts that the average Internet surfer knows who Jeff Gannon is.

You're ignoring an awful lot of people when you make the obsolete conclusion that television rules in importance.

71. Few to none of those internet news consumers are SWING VOTERS.
Swingvoters, moderates & non-political folks dont go to DU, Freeperville or blogs, get their news from "the TV", "the papers" and even morning & commute home radio- mostly RW radio.

We can agree that the internet is great, but it's not the complete answer as far as getting our message out.

How do you know what sites swing voters, moderates and non-political folks visit? DailyKos recieves a million unique visits a day. Can you say that about your local paper or television station?

77. We disagree. Do a man on the street test & see for yourself.
Ask the guy next to you on the bus who Gannon is or about the DSM. Then ask him who Terry Schivo is. Let me know what happens.

80. It's a very fun thing to do. And we agree, the internet is a great tool...
...and we should thank Dog that Al Gore invented it- :)

BUT- lets not put all our eggs in one basket- we DO have access to the "Audio & Video" echo chamber, and most moderates, swing voters & non-political types still rely on outlets besides the internet.

Have a great day BS- take care!!!

55. Remember Sinclair...
They lost tons of advertisers over their Kerry slam fest. That was the most motivated liberals got calling and e-mailing and... in the end they aired the video anyway. Ideology trumped again. The slightest peep from conservatives sends reporters hiding under the tables.

After all the e-mails I sent to the NYT over their coverage, it took them MONTHS to do a half-assed, coulda done a little better apology that didn't mention Miller. How long did it take Newsweek to retract their accurate story? Read the ombudsman pieces at the NYT and Washington Post and it's pretty clear they don't give a F#%k what we think.

15. "Star" democrats could go on TV and talk about things the media wont...
...but every time I suggest that folks flame me & accuse me of "DEM bashing"

Hillary, Kerry, Dean, Obama, etc could be on TV everyweek talking up the Plame thing, DSM, Gannon, whatever- but instead they stick to "safe" issues and let the media define all the issues.

We need to stop asking why the GOP owned media wont repeat DU talking points and start asking why "star" Democrats refuse to talk about issues that the base talks about on TV.

Why not post it where the really thick heads need to hear it: www.freerepublic.com Those poor bastards still are operating under the assumption that the media is their friend.

56. Why then...
Notice how after I make this claim, liberals immediately come out will their list of excuses: it's about power, money, ratings. The media means well, they would go after Rove except blah, blah, blah. Our scandals don't have enough sex. Dems don't complain enough. They don't frame the debate. We shift blame everywhere except to those responsible: the media's conservative agenda.

Say it after me: THE MEDIA IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. THEY ARE YOUR ENEMY. Stop rationalizing and accept that fact.

and come up with a plan.

I agree with blogslut.

I may be wrong, but the fact that the administration has one talking head saying the war is almost over and the other saying it takes more time....THIS MEANS that they have finally felt the need to respond to the polls... before the Administration would only say "we are gonna do what we are gonna do". Now they are scrambling to answer questions.... LETS KEEP HOLDING THEIR FEET TO THE FIRE. We've got them.... KEEP PLUGGING AWAY.. don't let the MSM drop it. Keep pressuring our congressmen.

O yeah and don't forget to plug the people who are doing a good job in reporting....

44. John Stewart's book "Democracy Inaction"
has excellent charts that depict who own the media, If I remember correctly, there are about 5 major corporations that own 90% of all the mainstream media. The CEOs of these corporations could care less about enlightening the American People. I have read elsewhere that CEO salary and bonuses have escalated to a ridiculous 400 times the average pay of their company employees. They do not know who we, the American People are, they have given up the honorable profession of journalism and transformed themselves in to courtiers. Their ultimate goal is to continue merging the mainstream media until they own every television and radio station, newspaper and magazine in the nation. The primary threat to them from accomplishing this is the internet. They think the internet is the mob, and have hated Al Gore ever since he championed it. What we may consider as the democratization of information threatens them like no other.
