One of Officer's thoracic vertebrae "crushed" during Taser test.
http://www.amnestyusa.org/magazine/aftershocks.html

"When it was Powers' turn, the weapon's electrodes were attached to his ankle and shoulder. His captain pulled the trigger.

And what happened next changed Powers forever.

"Instantly I was in severe pain," he said. "The next thing I knew, I was on the ground. Just trying to draw breath killed me. The pain radiated around from my back and chest. It was the worst pain I ever felt in my life."

A doctor told Powers the muscle contractions caused by the TASER's electrical charge had crushed one of his thoracic vertebrae. His career as a cop was over."

25. A. i feel sorry for you...
and I am a 45+ yr old machinist and CNC machine programmer, 20 yr. union member, 30 yr federal tax payer, fairly well travelled (most of u.s., good part of mexico and cental america), 125-135 IQ, and locally active "political activist". So I ask you: "How MUCH does it hurt to be stupid?"

B. Tasers are super-charged cattle-prods for people...or, as you cops call us, "Them".

C. Yeah, I know.

D: Rare? How common can something be and it still be considered "rare"? I guess diamonds are considered rare, even though there are tens of hundreds of thousands of them stored in warehouses ownded by the diamond cartels...so yeah, i guess by SOME definition you could say that the incidence of police brutality by use of taser is rare...but it isn't the word I would choose.

9. I wouldn't either. But I am very upset that we would inflict pain upon...
people for the most mundane reasons. People gave their lives so that we could be free.

2. Frightening
when you realize that as of recently the police are much more frequently USING this thing on people who aren't harming them, or necessarily endangering them, but are just being difficult. Just b/c it's "non-lethal" they feel they can use it much more liberally. Beating someone over the head w/ a billy club is "non-lethal", that doesn't mean it isn't police brutality.

10. The problem is that the Taser is being used in places where....
physical force would have NEVER been used before.

There have been firsthand accounts of 2,382 lives spared by this lifesaving device!

15. Are you defending that tasers do not directly cause injury?
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 01:08 PM by AX10
I disagree, the taser is an electric baton.

17. No. Whether the taser did it or hitting the ground did it--the taser
caused it. Direct or indirect injury, still the taser's fault. If everybody who got tazed would immediately have a bakc or nck injury...do the math! No more tazers. Too many lawsuits & disability claims.

12. I wonder what it is going to take to wake people up
That these are lethal and dangerous weapons.
I just don't understand.
Of note..I do feel badly for this police officer. However, maybe this will help prevent TASER abuse--at least in his precinct.

If everyone who's Tazed hit the floor with a back/neck injury---hmmm.
