Message From Dali Lama On Rage
"The message we hear from all sources of truth is clear: We are all one. That is a message the human race has largely ignored. Forgetting this truth is the only cause of hatred and war, and the way to remember is simple: Love, this and every moment. If we could love even those who have attacked us, and seek to understand why they have done so, what then would be our response? Yet if we meet negativity with negativity, rage with rage, attack with attack, what then will be the outcome?"

28. If the Repukes led by Orrin Hatch ever try to allow a Foreign Born citizen
to become President (like they want so that they can push Ahnuld) then I'd ask the Dalai Lama to become a US Citizen and then run for President....then again he's a bit older now, but he is so wise and your right, what a President he would be.... sigh....

14. His Holiness also said:
"In the practice of tolerance, one's enemy is the best teacher."

"Compassion and tolerance are not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength."

AND

"We cannot learn real patience and tolerance from a guru or a friend. They can be practiced only when we come in contact with someone who creates unpleasant experiences. According to Shantideva, enemies are really good for us as we can learn a lot from them and build our inner strength."

It is so hard to imagine being tolerant and compassionate toward anyone in the * administration. But the Dalai Lama has had lots of practice being tolerant of his enemies. We can learn a lot from this great man.

15. Er...no...

"If we could love even those who have attacked us, and seek to understand why they have done so, what then would be our response?"

Well, THEIR response could either be "oh, damn, I've killed a lovely nice person," or "Fuck you, bang bang." Really, it depends on THEM. Killers aren't necessarily noted for their empathy.

Understand, fine, but love? Nah, that's daft. Love who loves you. I do not require of myself that I love all human beings, just that I respect them if they're peacable strangers and respect those I interact with who respect me. Loving people who are shooting at you makes it easier for them to shoot you as well as easier for them not to and really you're better off either making sure they don't want to in the first place or shooting back or running away...

Sorry, Dali Lama, but forgetting that we are "all one", which, in fact, demonstrably we are not, is not the only cause of hatred and war. In fact, clinging to the notion that we are "all one" is often the cause of hatred and war, IMHO...

33. Buddhism is predicated on this...
That we are ignorant of the True Reality of Oneness.
Enlightenment is the process of realization of the Oneness.
Enlightenment can come slowly in small pieces, or quickly in large chunks, or not at all.
It is a worthy goal, and the Dalai Lama is only one man who shows the way, among many others.

I don't want to be part of a great big wibbly Oneness, thanks, I like being me. It's exactly the same as death, it just sounds nicer.

We are not "All One", which, if you have a quick look at it rather than bathing in the niceness of its overtones, is in fact rather a nasty idea.

The reason I am not a buddhist is because I think buddhism is predicated on something that isn't true.

Sorry.

I'm only stating what I believe the Dalai Lama is saying, in MY view only.
Lots more people in this world believe what Christ said or Mohammed said. I think they all would agree peace is better than war, and kindness is better than greed.
Other than that, it's ALL in how you look at it!
LOL

17. Thank you for posting this... yes, we are one.
I've been listening to Peter, Paul, and Mary quite a bit lately... I especially like this song...

RIVER OF JORDAN
Peter Yarrow- ©1972 Mary Beth Music, ASCAP

I traveled the banks of the River of Jordan
To find where it flows to the sea.
I looked in the eyes of the cold and the hungry
And I saw I was looking at me.
I wanted to know if life had a purpose
And what it all means in the end.
In the silence I listened to voices inside me
And they told me again and again.

The is only one river. There is only one sea.
And it flows through you, and it flows through me.
There is only one people. We are one and the same.
We are all one spirit. We are all one name.
We are the father, mother, daughter and son.
From the dawn of creation, we are one.
We are one.

Every blade of grass on the mountain
Every drop in the sea
Every cry of a newborn baby
Every prayer to be free
Every hope at the end of a rainbow
Every song ever sung
Is a part of the family of woman and man
And that means everyone.

We are only one river. We are only one sea.
And it flows through you, and it flows through me.
We are only one people. We are one and the same.
We are all one spirit. We are all one name.
We are the father, mother, daughter and son
From the dawn of creation, we are one.
We are one

18. It's so easy to look at the 'other' side, judging 'them' for their hatred
... 'we' feel justified in doing so... just as 'they' do... the identity of 'us' & 'them' depends on the issue at hand. The more difficult task is looking inside one's self and eliminating one's own negative feelings... and to be passionate without hatred, but with love.

22. Thanks so much for posting this...
It's so hard to get past the anger and frustration sometimes I feel like I'm being devoured from the inside out. Mindful living is so much better for us in so many ways. His Holiness is a wise and wonderful man.

I was at a lecture given by another wise and wonderful man, Dr. Cornel West earlier this year. Someone in the audience asked him, as a black man, how could he call someone who hates him for the color of his skin his "brother"? Dr. West said with a huge smile, "Hey man, I'm going to love my way out of the darkness no matter what!"

That's my sig line. It's simple and easy to remember. Harder to practice though, right?

31. Thanks and I need some advice please
Thanks Tace

Right after I read your post I posted it on another blog. Here is one response I got. I just dont know how to respond, if at all. I just can't understand such negativity. And it was the posters' first post. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re the DL (this is my first post here and the community seems a great one btw - so hi !), I'm sure we can all agree with his sentiments but there are serious concerns over his role and activities and as such he must be treated with extreme caution.

I would cite the following:

1. His relationship with the CIA alone should give pause for thought - especially as his organization is still a recipient of US funds.

2. Ditto (squared) his relationship with world leader such as Bush and his aversion to criticizing them in a any way, shape or form.

3. His ambiguous attitude to the war in Iraq.

4. The persecution of fellow Tibetans from the Dorje sect (a sect he was once a member of) and the claims of murders and pogroms against Dorje by DL followers which have been suppressed.

5. The absolute certainty that Intel forces would have infiltrated 'new age' movements from the 60s onwards. Such movements were (at that time) highly critical of government, gaining in mass appeal and 'activist. they have now been neutralized and transformed into 'quietist' and accepting (which is the overt meaning of the DL's comments above) and his role in the spread of this 'everything is ok just relax' doctrine is obvious. I would also question the degree to which 'God' is a concept which a Lama could subscribe to - at the very best here he is being disingenuous.

6. There are grounds to suppose that the DL does in reality subscribe to an apocalyptic doctrine similar to the 'Christian' one and which also envisages violent struggle against Islam.

7. Suppression of dissent from disillusioned followers (who ARE out there) and an ignoring of the abuse issues which they claim.

There's more. Much more but I think that is grounds enough for caution. There are many links to all this stuff but this is my first post so I wouldn't want to be controversial ( we are dealing after all with a meme which has much emotion charged into it) - they are there to be found for the seeker though.
