Requesting verfication on this Bush "quote"
"Sarah, if the American people had ever known the truth about what we Bushes have done to this nation, we would be chased down in the streets and lynched."

George Bush Senior speaking in an interview with
Sarah McClendon in December 1992

I've seen this quote popping up in a few places here and there, but not in sources that I consider impeccable in terms of credibility. Does anyone know of any reliable source that verifies this quote attributed to Bush Sr?

1. googled
Your search - "Sarah, if the American people had ever known the truth about what we Bushes have done to this nation, we would be chased down in the streets and lynched." - did not match any documents.

Is this paraphrased?

4. Here's another version of that quote
"if the American people really knew what we had done, we would be chased down the streets and lynched."

I googled this and found it in a few paranoid websites and an indymedia site. Still not sound enough for me.

2. Even if it was an accurate quote, which I doubt,...
...Democrats stopped lynching people decades ago.

9. Thanks for backing me up!
I was afraid I'd take a lot of flak for that snarky remark.

Red states, back when red was Dem:

6. Yup. Dems stopped lynching right about the time Helms became a Republican
oh, and Strom Thurmond too. Coincidence?

7. I don't think it's a coincidence.
Exalted Cyclops Byrd and civil rights opponent Fulbright remained Democratic during that time, so it's more likely there were other factors involved in the party's racist history.

Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 08:31 PM by beam me up scottie
deleted first link- not a good source, try this one:

http://www.oldamericancentury.org/submit_0067.htm

Still no evidence of the newsletter but the quote shows up everywhere.

11. Thanks!
Not conclusive, but more promising. That first hand source still proves elusive. We'll have to get in touch with Ms. McClendon ourselves if this keeps up.

16. Tis a shame
At least she died at a ripe old age. I wonder who would have access to her notes and journals.

18. It looks like some of
her articles can be found at the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Columbia at the University of Missouri:

http://www.umsystem.edu/whmc/invent/desc-womedia.html

It's about halfway down the page, here is the listing:

McClendon, Sarah, Papers, (WUNP5048)
1.7 linear feet
PRELIMINARY INVENTORY. Addition to papers of a journalist and women's rights advocate. Includes materials on sexual harassment and women in the military.

I found another link and I'm checking into that one.

14. I had seen that quote before in greater context...
It was "we" - but, I think it meant all the elites in government, not just the BFEE.

his family by name ?
That's what I remember but it's been a while.
I'm still searching for the newsletter, it's got to be archived somewhere.

12. That quote is not in your cited article
but I reckon that the quote (if it's for real) would be based on actions described in that article. While an interesting read, rumormillsnews.com is highly vulnerable to mere conjecture and false information IMO.

19. That's all I can find.
I tried three different search engines and all that's left are the non-reliable sources.
For some strange reason, the searches keep pulling up dozens of sites on marijuana and UFOs.
:wtf:

20. Appreciate the help
The problem with some of these interesting quotes is that they're rarely substantiated by reliable sources. Usually it's those off-beat sites that pass these quotes around. That doesn't necessarily make these quotes false, but they're not sound enough to count as "smoking guns" or "court-room evidence exhibits".

I'll give you an example of a quote that was passed around in many sites. Rowlings, the author of the Harry Potter series, was quoted as an avowed Satanist:

"I worship the Devil, Beelzebub, Satan, Lucifer -- in all his unholy forms. And I owe all my success, all my glory, all my power, to my sweet, beautiful Lucifer. I'll give myself, body and soul, to the Dark Master. And in return, he will give me absurd wealth and power over the weak and pitiful of the world. And he did! Well, of course the books are designed to corrupt young mind. That's what Lucifer demands of us -- all of us! Because my master's power is only now at its zenith. Only now can I reveal the true purpose of my work. Only with the release of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, due in North American theatres on Nov. 15, is it too late for all you impotent mortals to do anything to stop it!"

This quote and condensed quotes (that are less flamboyant that the one I quoted) have circulated all over the internet. Suffice to say, the fundies took it as gospel truth and used it as ammo against Harry Potter. I just had to research on this...and true enough, this was quickly discredited. It originated in the satirical Onion website (or its like).

http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/j/jkrowlings.htm

That's just an example of an unverified quote that was proven false. As for the one I asked about Bush as well as the others I'm curious about (the Rockfeller & Kissinger quotes that suggest Machievellian powerful control over the media as well as the population), I haven't found anything to verify or falsify them...I'll just keep them in the X-files for now ;)

21. You're welcome.
I think NewJeffCT is right about the "we" part of the quote. I went back and checked and most of the sources show it without the bush family reference.

I stash quotes like that one away "just in case".
As an atheist, I am particularly fond of the GHWB quote where he questions the patriotism of American atheists.
