07/10/05 "Costal Post" - - Official US. government reports on soldiers under US command killed in Iraq are so fragmented that they account for less than half of the total number, according to information uncovered as part of an inquiry by the Government of Puerto Rico regarding the total number of Puerto Rican war casualties.

This analysis was confirmed by El Diario/La Prensa's review of multiple documents, including official reports issued by the US Department of Defense, the Iraqi Ministry of the Interior and more than 230 battlefront reports, which reveal that more than 4,076 troops under US command have been killed in 799 days of battle.

This information contrasts markedly with the limited information on casualties generally issued by US military authorities, which focus only on US uniformed troops. These total 1,649.

Military affairs expert JosŽ Rodr’guez Beruff from the University of Puerto Rico said that the figures showing more than 4,000 dead indicate that, far from winning the war in Iraq, "what is happening is that the troops are being worn down." He said that traditional theorists calculate that for an armed invading force to win a guerrilla war, its casualties should be one to ten of its enemy's. In this case, that would require 40,000 casualties among the insurgents.

In addition, Rodr’guez Reduff warned that the reports should be reviewed on an ongoing basis, as he suspects that the number of casualties is even higher.

1. It does explain something.

I've been puzzled by knowing so many with family members over there and them knowing so many who've lost someone. The numbers just didn't make sense. I know the military is a rather close-knit community, but it's not that close.

We've lost too damn many. Time to bring them home.

This "war" is an abomination to humanity, it must end as soon as possible.
I believe we should withdraw immediately and start handing all that money that has been going to Helliburton to the Iraqi people.

I used to crochet with thread, loved it, but lost my concentration. I don't have one piece I ever did, gave everything I made away as gifts. I can knit also. I'm a lefty and it was hell for anyone teaching me!

Please express my sympathy to those you know that have lost a loved one over there. My heart is with them.

10. It's hard, being in a military town.

B.C. has three bases/military places, and we've lost some of our own here. It's hard hearing about it, and seeing the fear in loved ones' eyes.

Do you throw your yarn with your left hand, like in the continental style? That's how I teach lefties to knit. I also teach my students how to do the long-tail cast on the left-handed way because it's better in many ways. There a many lefties on the message boards at knitty.com, if you're interested. ;)

I gave tons of yarn and thread away to the Senior center here last year when I moved into my house. I've been so busy between painting,fighting the WH, sitting the grandson (4), etc. had no time anymore.

I may slow down by winter! Let's keep in touch and see! Much of my pattern following ability has been looking at the directions and guessing, it'd be easier to have someone that could actually show me. I got lucky most of the time, but others.. LOL, were a mess at about the middle.

I suspect that if I had a loved one who was killed in Iraq or as the result of wounds suffered in Iraq I'd probably know about it. Further, if it were never reported, at least in my local paper, I'd probably be inclined to comment.

Can't we just prosecute the argument on the known facts -- my god, they are bad enough.

5. it's a definition debate

and AAR could be right anyway - depending of definitions

the problem is the definition of KIA : if you die IN Iraq for some reason (hostile fire or accident related to mission), it's probably reported right.

But if you die on the flight to Germany or 3 days after, or a week after due to some fatal injury while serving, are you counted as "KIA" ?

I guess not. Nevertheless the Iraq war killed you.

Reports I read before (probably leaking from medics in Germany) stated about 6,000 deaths. So the report above is probably accurate.

icasualties is an independent, non-profit watchdog organization. There are several others, also.

I certainly wouldn't put it past the DoD to under-report casualties in Iraq like they did in Vietnam, but this time they've got lots of people watching them - and they know it.

From what I've researched, they seem to be reporting it correctly, this time. But I'm certainly open to more information.

It seems to me we never hear about anyone who dies from their wounds after evacuation from Iraq. Surely, they can't all be still alive?

normally you are counted "dead on the road" here, if you die within 3 weeks of your accident...

but if you count 6 weeks you can multiply the deaths by 1.5

so the statistics look better the shorter the hospitalisation time is.

Still it's the car that killed you, unless the death reason is completely different from the initial injury. Which can happen of course but is very rare.

8. Maybe the Govt of Puerto Rico should just consider that their number is

higher and does not extapolate to the overall count because my guess is that Puerto Ricans are OVERREPRESENTED proportionally among the troops being sent to Iraq, probably in proportion to total enlistments too. They will discover it soon enough, I imagine. If that is what is going on, not that it would surprise me any.

16. I think the person is saying...

that perhaps poorer people are being overrepresented in the death counts and that there are a lot of poor folks on that island. Perhaps the person is saying that the Puerto Ricans have not yet realized it and are extrapolating based on their own losses. I don't know if this is true or not. I'll readily admit it is speculation on my part.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter much to the victims of the war because they're all dead.
