1. I'm watching MSNBC which I never do but for Olbremann
and they're doing a decent job.

Prayers and wishes for our DUers who are in the zone.

2. The world is not coming to an end
Because of this hurricane.
If I ran a major network like the one's listed above I wouldn't give much coverage to the hurricane. I would do like half hour updates.
I mean the cable news is doing coverage 24/7--how much more can they say about a storm. Granted the storm is huge and it will be deadly/costly but come on.

BTW, I hope everyone in the path is safe. Take care.

4. Well at least you're in TX
and the storm is not coming you're way.
What do you want the networks to do?
I find it so silly that the cable networks have reporters out there right in the middle of the storm. What does that prove? It doesn't make anyone a better journalist, imo.

5. I saw another thread here today with the exact opposite sentiment
Just watch re-runs of last year's (or the year before) hurricane coverage, and insert the name of the new hurricane.

There is no actual news relayed during Hurricane coverage. Just some idiot weatherperson with a made-up name describing how much bend the palm trees have in them.

I'd rather watch the race. And I live in Florida.

7. The major networks exist to make a profit
Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 05:14 PM by Garfield Goose
They do not exist as a public service. I'm not passing judgement on the correctness of their decision, but just stating a fact.
BTW, that's also the purpose of commercial media: to make a profit, not to report the truth. These are commercial enterprises. Don't ever forget that. That's why I always take any media's word with a grain of salt.

8. There's nothing in the hurricane...
...that can be blamed on Saddam Hussein, Micheal Jackson, or those guys in Aruba who kidnapped and probably killed that girl.

9. Battery-operated radios!!
If a hurricane is coming in your direction, periodic updates are sufficient to let you know whether or not you need to evacuate your area or prepare for serious storms.

If the government orders an evacuation, it will be covered by all regular media. (Personally, I would advise against waiting for an official government announcement.)

When (and if) it gets close, you won't have any power, so it doesn't matter whether or not you have cable or what the networks are showing. (If it doesn't knock out the power, it probably isn't strong enough to worry about much.) Battery-operated radios might allow you to get some news, but probably not from local stations.

Once while we were waiting with coastal refugees for a hurricane arrival, we watched the weather channel for about an hour. Then we decided we didn't need constant updates amounting to "IT'S GETTING CLOSER" and watched a movie instead. Fortunately we didn't lose power until after the end of the movie.

Hurricanes are a fact of life in the southeast and account for much of the yearly rainfall. The plants and animals native to the area are adapted to them. If there weren't so many houses built right on the coast, there wouldn't be nearly as much to destroy.

11. I think you're forgetting the local affiliates.
The people who need to have information for their safety and well-being are getting it.

For many who are not affected and have little friends and family in the affected area, it's simply a vague human interest story. So, no, the national networks wouldn't drop programming to go all hurricane all the time. I'm sure they're giving updates throughout the day, however, and it'll be the main story on the news.

That's about right.
