On my China analogy, we wanted to put Chalabi in, but it was obvious he wouldn't be accepted. We did place Allawi, a former hit man for Saddam, as Prime Minister in the interim government. His party did miserably in the actual election. Although there was only one international election observer in all of Iraq, I'd like to think the election was legit, which gets back to my analogy. If the vast majority of people want the foreign troops to leave, and many of the representatives campaigned on just that platform, then that makes the new government look weak at best and complicit at worst as long as the occupation forces remain.

The Coalition Provisional Authority did a poll of Iraqis on a number of questions and one was whether they view us as liberators or occupiers.

The results were pretty grim:

A Gallup poll done around the same time was only slightly more supportive of us staying.

The only poll that has shown anywhere near majority support for us being there was from a right wing think tank, that has a vested interest in making this Neocon adventure look good.

I don't think Paul Bremer was looking to shoot his boss in the foot.

The argument that we are fighting terrorists there instead of here assumes there's a set number of people who are mad at us, and we can eventually kill enough of them to make the problem go away.

The problem is, at the base of all of it, is a resentment of our involvement in propping up their dictators, who don't share the oil wealth with their own people. All this gets channeled into religion because they have no effective political outlets in most countries over there. So by intervening militarily, we are making more not less people resent and want to attack us.

Polls of reaction in other Arab countries to our invasion of Iraq confirm this. A Zogby poll in 2003 found that 90% disapproved of our invasion

Some of what I thought were my best posts were largely ignored too while the more frivolous (like this one or a poll on ties) go on and on.

You just never know what will catch people's attention, and the same post a few weeks or even days later could get an entirely different reaction.

Some people (like me) have noticed that the right has been successful the last couple of decades by using a slightly less than genteel communication style. If someone is doing something that works, it's working taking a look at and using, provided it stays within ethical bounds of not lying or harming anyone.

Also, the most serious voices of the left rarely get a platform in the mainstream media, and instead we are represented by almost literal straw men like Alan Colmes, who apparently has a clause in his contract that says he can't dispute any of the "facts" Sean Hannity uses. Worse, many democrats seem to be operating under a similar principle. They do not use the best, most obvious critisms of current policy, or present the best alternative policies.

Like a guy who gets yelled at at work and comes home and yells at his family, people vent here because they can without being called unpatriotic or shouted down. It's not right or wrong, it's just a dynamic working here.

You'll notice that they address the "ping" to one person or to a list of people in particular, depending upon the topic. For instance, the psycho Schiavo threads always had the same list of people participating; a group of them consolidated and formed a "ping list" they could use for all Schiavo topics.

I'm on a couple of "ping lists"--that means I always have messages waiting for me there! :rofl: I've also gotten a lot of private messages; sometimes I carry on conversations with the freeps on a private basis.

There used to be some moderates/libertarian types in the mix, years ago; those have largely vanished. A lot of them were kicked out.

So if you want to send a message to James Guckert, all you have to do (provided you're a member of the site) is put "Jeff Gannon" in the TO field, and voila. When he logs on, he'll see that he has a waiting message!
