How long before we see a "weather-head" killed-on-screen?
The CNN and Weather Channel reporters cannot get enough of the danger. The local-yokel reporters try to out-do the major outlets. They will stand out there in the worst of a bad hurricane .. for what? It is like war correspondents standing out in the middle of an 82mm mortar attack. It is insane. Flying debris, rising water, displaced snakes, and lightning. It also foments a cavalier attitude toward these killer storms among an element of the population that is not well known for critical thinking abilities. Know what I mean, Vern?

1. I'm watching the Weather Channel, and yes . . .
. . . we don't need to see that. It's crazy. Get inside, you idiot.

11. I applied for a job flying those C-130 hurricane hunters in the '70s.
I was working for NOAA (NWS) at the time. I landed a great JetStar-II gig before they ever made a decision. Probably would have been better off, career wise, in the hurricanes. Know what I mean, Karl?

12. Yep I know whutcha mean...no mandatory retirement I'd guess...?
I thought about that many years ago but never pursued it. I was approached by a couple guys I knew well when we were learning to fly in the early 60s a few years later about Air America. I was tempted, I confess. :D

13. I used to run into those Air America guys everywhere!
One day, during the fall monsoon, I was holding over the Nha Trang NDB at 6000 feet, in the soup, waiting on a PAR/GCA into Cam Ranh. I missed the tail end of an AA Beech-18 (Volpar) by about 100 feet! He was just tooling through the A/O!

3. Not soon enough
Perhaps by a flying cement truck.

They only encourage people to ride out the storm because the people on the teevee did it last time.

9. Dan Rather made his name covering Hurricane Carla in Galveston ...
A big part of that story (September 14, 1961) was the displaced snake aspect ...

5. CNN wants "CItizen Journalists" to send in hurricane photos
Of course they are saying not to put your self in danger, but you know some idiot will do exactly that to get his picture on "the news".

18. I originally went on to type...
"Pretty soon they will call on Citizen Journalists to take pictures of suspicious neighbors with ACLU bumper stickers and the like" . . so you are not alone.

19. KMSP, Fox 9 in the Twin Cities
ENCOURAGES people to go film/photograph severe thunderstorms in EVERY weather newscast. They could care less about the danger of the people, they just want good photos to show for ratings.

7. here in south Louisiana
and I saw that idiot Anderson Cooper
"WOW! there goes the giant Ramada Inn Sign...get back! get back!"
I tell you what
my mama would have slapped me silly
if I ever would have been stupid enough
to be outside in the middle of a hurricane
while giant sheets of metal were flying around
even a toddler has more sense than thaty
I kept thinking...you know
one of those projectiles
is going to take that guy's head off
right here and now on the TEEVEE!

it's stupid

8. Weather Channel has lost
the original intent of having somebody out in the storm's path....it was supposed to be educational.....but it's not anymore.

Remember during last year's storms, weather channel personnel constantly had nutjobs in the background trying to show off their...ummmmmmm....intestinal fortitude by standing out in the storm ...hoping to get on tv for their 15 minutes of fame?

Weather Channel needs to re-evaluate their storm chasing activities.

15. You have to admit it's funny, though
We had a weather guy here who loved to stand out in tornadoes. One day he was reporting, pointing out the huge wall cloud and -- BAM! A lawn chair flew through the air and smacked him upside the head. I about wet myself laughing.

The Weather Channel guy who almost got struck by lightening today was funny.

If they're dumb enough to stand out there, then I'll watch and laugh.

They already have the theme songs, the graphics, and the melodrama.
