6. DU meltdowns are different. FR just flat-out closed port 80 (HTTP).

When DU is having a bad network day, it gradually slow down, and connections eventually timeout after a long time trying. That's the natural consequence of excess load or bad link. This is different, it's a deliberate shutdown. The host www.freerepublic.com IMMEDIATELY sends a Rejected response upon any HTTP request.

Adn no, it isn't blocking of links from DU because I tried from a different IP address too.

23. Not the server, just web access to it.

When your web browser went to it, their server replied (very fast), "nothing to see here, move along!" Which means the server WAS there.

If the server was shutdown, the browser would just take a long time trying and then give up, giving an error message like "connection timed out" or "can't find host" or something similar.

If the server used Linux (and it quite probably does), they could have ran the following command to achieve the "nothing to see here, move along" effect:

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --syn --dport 80 -j REJECT

Is used by your browser to get HTTP content... unless you define a specific port. By FR closing port 80 they have effectvely ended HTTP traffic to the site.

Port 21 is used by default for ftp traffic for example.

Ports range from 1-65535 on the TCP protocol. Usually they have specific uses like port 80 & 21, but can be used for anything.

A good firewall will stealth these ports so they can not be pinged and your system detected.
