Experts fear 'endless' terror war

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8524679/

New York and Washington. Bali, Riyadh, Istanbul, Madrid. And now London.

When will it end? Where will it all lead?

The experts aren’t encouraged. One prominent terrorism researcher sees the prospect of “endless” war. Adds the man who tracked Osama bin Laden for the CIA, “I don’t think it’s even started yet.”

An Associated Press survey of longtime students of international terrorism finds them ever more convinced, in the aftermath of London’s bloody Thursday, that the world has entered a long siege in a new kind of war. They believe that al-Qaida is mutating into a global insurgency, a possible prototype for other 21st-century movements, technologically astute, almost leaderless. And the way out is far from clear.

In fact, says Michael Scheuer, the ex-CIA analyst, rather than move toward solutions, the United States took a big step backward by invading Iraq.

'Self-sustaining' jihad
Now, he said, “we’re at the point where jihad is self-sustaining,” where Islamic “holy warriors” in Iraq fight America with or without allegiance to al-Qaida’s bin Laden.

The cold statistics of a RAND Corp. database show the impact of the explosion of violence in Iraq: The 5,362 deaths from terrorism worldwide between March 2004 and March 2005 were almost double the total for the same 12-month period before the 2003 U.S. invasion.

7. this is no war
Waging war on an abstract concept is absurd except as metaphor. The "War on Terror" is a propaganda slogan, nothing more.

Violent political protest is nothing but violence with a veneer of political motives. Criminal investigative and prosecutory processes have always sufficed for such. There is no more "history of terror" than there is a "history of love" or "history of flatulence".

5. True leaders would guard against terrorism behind the scenes
- not use it to scare the shit out of the citizens! Bush and his defense department buddies are laughing their asses off at us foolish citizens. We've allowed our government and our media to create an atmosphere of permanent fear called - "The War on Terror". Well guess what - they are the terrorists!

terrorism - the act of terrorizing; use of force or threats to demoralize, intimidate, and subjugate, esp. such use as a political weapon or policy.

- Webster's New World Dictionary

6. Emmanuel Goldstein fait accompli
The entire purpose of the sham was to create a perceived perpetual threat. The actuality of it is a mere inconvenience.

9. I saw that on the crawl as I was clicking
and it gave me a start...

But then I remember the class I took about fifteen twenty years ago about Terrorism...

My prof at the time told us that Terrorism would be the way of the future since it's cheap, disruptive, effective, depending on your target, and also is borderless......

13. welcome, tocqueville...
ever run into 'those' people who'd rather bring dislocation onto others than to admit they are profoundly wrong  imo they are they who've brought us this endless notion of terror, sadly, yet another database would indicate their portfolios to be steeped in war materiels as well, not: http://www.renewables.ca/main/main.php or http://www.arcosanti.org but kevlar, death & viagra :eyes:
