4. isnt it amazing though, how many people were gripped in this

though we knew probably ok, we were all concerned. i know i kept opening thread to see if viva had up date. took the kids out for bike ride. immediately came on to check again. he was found. yea

but this,........this is who we are as a people.

anyway, my boys 10 and 7 read the thread. to see all the people concerned for this strangers son. and the relief to find he was fine. though,.....ass kickin was threatened. they had the hugest of smile.

That although DU is something of it's own village, if it was a Freepers child the reacion would have been no different. I have 2 daughters (12 and 10) the 12 year old is getting a cell phone when school starts again. She's started going with her friends after school and is gaining some independence. Rather than discourage that we're making sure she can call us, and we can call her.

I've had the news on during all of this and couldn't help wonder what it must be like trying to raise a child in Iraq right now.

just a different world today. husband and i, as children, we were out and about all day. my parents never knew where we were., i wonder what my mom was doing all day, lol lol no kids to do.

but today.......10 and 7, i dont let mine but out in the yard. jsut letting them explore the alley part. so sad. cars go too fast, we have down hill, both ways, we are at a bottom. cars can really get going. kids havent gotten to ride bikes like we did.

cell phone, as much as i dont like the idea of kids having such access and toy at such young age,......to be able to stay in touch makes it worth it.

of course it would be the same for any child
and one of the things that hurt my heart in iraq.

the understanding is that it's not to be used as a toy. She isn't supposed to use it during school unless she needs to call home, no long distance unless it's a genuine emergency etc., It's a fun thing for her and a status symbol that she'll be very proud of, but it's actually (in addition to being a means to keep communication open) a tool to help teach responsibility.

18. You're so right about that.

When I was a girl growing up in an Atlanta suburb, my school was a 10-minute (on a slow day) walk away.

Now, living in the north of England, my older son - who was 14 a few days ago - gets on a train with other students and adult commuters to go 4 stations down the line, gets off and then has a further 1/4 mile to walk to his school. I was absolutely terrified to let him do it when he started secondary school because he had just turned 12 not long before, but giving him his own phone has made all the difference to both of us.

14. It was always such a weird

mix of emotions when one of my twins would come straggling in...after giving me hours of anxiety. (they're 22 now). They'd have a flippant...oh, I thought I told you...or, a I tried to call, but...I'd be furious. And SO relieved.
And, of course, there would be those hours you lost, usually on a Saturday night/morning that meant your weekend was less than relaxing. Eaten half away with desperate cell phone calls. Waiting to hear the car pull into the driveway.
Oh, well. Someday I'll get to be the grandma and my little darlings can go through that particular kind of hell.
