Sirius AAR listeners
AAR has abandoned us big time. But I realized today it is THEIR loss. This morning, I listened to a host named Alex something and he was awesome. He was going on and on about CNN and their nonstop hurricane coverage. And he was dead on. He was so much better than Jerry Springer. I even called him and got right in; I was on hold only a few minutes before he put me on the air.

Then this afternoon I listened to Ed Schultz. I liked him too.

So don't fret; we are NOT screwed. AAR lost US. Their problem, not ours.

1. Yes, I've been listening to Talk Left all day today at work & I like it!
I'm sure as hell not purchasing a bunch of XM equipment after I just layed out bucks for the Sirius stuff.

Particularly when I'm not missing AirAmerica at all.

He was much more radical than the morning guys on AAR. I am going to like him. And Ed Schultz was every bit as radical as I had heard.

6. I've Been Trying To Wean Myself Off Of AAR For The Past Couple of Months..
and have done pretty well. The only show I really will miss terribly is Randi Rhodes. I can still pick her up on a delay on 1530 am out of Cincinnati after the sun goes down (if I really want to listen to her at work). I have really come to enjoy the Young Turks though. I actually thought about getting XM as well but the behavior of some of the XM attack dogs on this forum changed my mind. The only time I have ever had to put anyone on ignore was because of posts regarding satellite radios.

I will miss Randi some but she had been less intersting to me in the past few months. So even losing her is no big deal to me.

20. They Are On From 6pm EST to 9pm EST...
some describe them as half ass. Which is fine, as they will tell you theirselves that they are far from extreme. I enjoy the interaction between the three hosts though. They do a really good job of breaking down issues for political novices such as myself though.

43. I was put off by the people who use DU to advertise
XM. Could they BE any more obvious?

I know it's all about money and AAR is going for the $$$ by giving XM an exclusive. And if they played the whole line-up without cutting it up I MIGHT consider it when my Sirius subscription runs out, if they still offer the deal on the radio.

But right now XM is just going to have to do without me. I bought Sirius for AAR, and I can't afford to buy and subscribe to two satellite radios in less than a year. I'm sure AAR and XM will make it just fine without me.

46. If somone really would want to be helpful to us...
They'd point out a solution that doesn't lock you in to either service, since that seems to be the focal point of our problems. An Alpine solution may cost a bit more now, but it gives us the flexibility to turn on/off either service so that they can go on being the *non* common carrier that seem to aspire to be now, and us not paying the penalty of being locked into their hardware.

I haven't looked to see if there are good deals out there yet, since I'm inclined to stick with Sirius for a while yet), but perhaps others can track some down here for those who need to buy something now.

to stick with Sirius, but that attitude did seal the deal for me.

I'm sticking with Sirius, and I'll be that if we are patient, they will land great liberal hosts too, in addition to the ones they have.

I posted another thread, though; I want them to move Bill Press to the 9-12 slot (6-9 my time), and just move Alex Bennett.

Edited on Mon Jul-11-05 03:27 PM by drbtg1
...it would seem Sirius could expand some existing shows like Ms. Miller and Mr. Hartman, add a couple of other shows like the recently added Bill Press show, and it wouldn't take all that much to have two channels on Sirius independent of AAR.

Maybe they could get Colin McEnroe from Hartford. Much more funny than Al Franken

Bill Press, I think.

Honestly, the only shows in AAR that I'm passionate about are Morning Sedition (I will miss Marc & Mark), Randi Rhodes (stream at work), and Mike Malloy. I was iffy on everyone else & actually would change streams so I could get Stephanie Miller instead of Springer.

you can hear hour one of her program from 9pm to 10pm. They then broadcast her final two hours from 3am to 5am. Her show is actually broadcast from 9am to noon. She is syndicated by Jones Radio Network (does syndication for Ed Schultz). Her show tends to be more comedy than anything serious but it is very funny.

19. Ahhhh!! Stephanie Miller
We've been getting a mix of AAR and Jones group from our local lefty station. We get Stephanie instead of Jerry Springer and she is good and extremely funny. She cuts through the bloviating bullshit from the right and gets to the inane humour and illogic at the core. She watches Fox so we don't have to.
Stephanie is the daughter of 1964 GOP VP nominee William Miller. must be mid-30s. Her show includes segments on what the Wingers said the previous day, other right wing inanities, a voice guy who does GREAT impressions and staffer who gets to do a "conspiracy corner" at sporadic intervals. The conspiracy corner is well put together and so logical.
Great show. By far my favorite. She's been on the air since February, I think. I have heard it is the fastest growing radio show in the US. Even O'Leilly takes shots at her.

28. When I bought my satellite radio,
Sirius had more subscribers. That was just a year ago. Like any other business, things are up and down with the weather. XM leads now but who knows for how long.

XM listeners may be happy but AAR has seriously pissed off a ton of Sirius subscribers. They didn't even have the courtesy to respond to my email. I would think customer satisfaction would be more important.

42. Uh.. no... Sirius never had more subscribers than XM...
XM went on the air in 2001,
in 2003 they had 700,000 subs.
They now have over 4.5 million subs.

Sirius went on the air in 2002 (one year later)
in Mar 2004, they had 351,663 subs
as March 2005, they have 1,448,695 subs

(those numbers from the Sirius 10Q filings of 9 May 05 copied here http://biz.yahoo.com/e/050509/siri10-q.html)

so, no, Sirus has NEVER had more subs than XM.

Just the facts.

15. Yes we can blame AAR
They left us high and dry. Many of us Sirius subscribers have satellite radio just for AAR. No way will it be added to any radio stations here in the midwest. Our only source for AAR is satellite radio or streaming it on our computers.

AAR gave us no warning; not one host said a word on the air last week about the switch today (at least not that I am aware of). They could have gone on the air with an explanation. They could have posted something on their website. They also left Sirius holding the bag with no explanation. I talked to Sirius several times in the past 3 months and they knew nothing about the switch. They seemed angry and I don't blame them.

Look, if AAR needs money badly enough that they end up closing themselves off to several thousand Sirius subscribers, then I guess it's a free country and they have that right. But they did it dirty. That is not a smart way to build a fan base. And now that Sirius left seems better than AAR, Karma seems to be paying off.

21. Actually, on AAR's front page on their web site...
...they had a little ad for a couple of weeks that starting July 11th, they would be "X-clusive" with XM.

It would also appear that Ms. Rhodes may have discussed this on the air based on a thread on Ms. Rhodes's web site. Of course, she may have done this to cover her ass.

76. Yep, and I heard it mentioned on Franken's show a couple times

I do think AAR may have hurt long-term viability for short-term gain w/ the XM exclusivity, but I hope not. Regardless, the exclusivity seems antithetical to liberal values -- but such is the corporate influence.

I'd be interested to learn, someday, how the negotiations w/ XM and Sirius went, and what substantially triggered going solo w/ XM.

10. I was considering getting satellite radio but didn't for this reason
I had to choose between XM and Sirius and some of the things I wanted were on one but not the other. For example my son wants baseball and I want Air America. I'd have to get two systems and pay two monthly fees.

If AAR is switching, it might be good for me, if I can get the baseball and AAR on the same one. But it's ridiculous to have to systems like this.

40. It's the same Alex Bennett that used to do the morning show
for Live-105 in the Bay Area back during the days of "Modern Rock" in the late 80's early nineties when we had the Steve Masters' mix then, etc. The ironic thing is that I remember Alex used to have it out critiquing Howard Stern in those days who was his big rival then and eventually got used on Live-105 instead of him there. Now you have them both aligned together on Sirius. Alex is on a little early for me these days on the left coast. Does he bad-mouth Howard Stern now at all?

Anyway, back to the replacement of AAR on Sirius... Here's a link of how I'd like to see Sirius potentially change their schedule to improve it a lot through utilizing their free channel for newer talent and moving folks like Thom Hartmann and Stephanie Miller to just be in their solid live blocks instead.

http://miken.best.vwh.net/talkradio/newlineups.html

If Sirius goes with something like one of these newer lineups, I'll make sure I renew my yearly subscription at the end of this month instead of switching to monthly.

Yeah, I think Springer's pretty lame and could get eaten up alive by Sirius with both Alex and Stephanie Miller competing against him. Even local affilliate here dumps him to put on local host Stacy Taylor in that slot. I really don't like how I think Danny Goldberg must be pushing affiliates to use his "golden boy" that he brought on board (Springer) which has KLSD putting in delayed broadcast of Springer instead of a full three hours live of Mike Malloy. I don't understand their mentality. They have a whole 12 hours of delayed broadcasts starting at 3:00 PM in the afternoon with only 1 hour of live radio (Malloy at 9:00 PM). Doesn't make a lot of sense to me to build a big "talk" radio listening audience. Though they'll start picking me up listening to Al in the mornings and that one hour at 9:00 PM now.

I'm going to miss listening to Randi over lunch hour though! But with the way that AAR screwed themselves, there's no way that problem can be solved, even if I were to get XM.

36. I agree, AAR lost us
They were losing me to Radio Left anyway. Being on the west coast, I don't get to listen to Springer, but I prefer Thom Hartman and Lynn Samuels to Al Franken (love the guy, but never got the big fuss about his show), the Young Turks and Stephanie Miller to Majority Report, and Randi and Ed Shultz entertained me about equally (although I would give the nod to Randi), so I wasn't listening to AAR that much anyway.

Speaking of which, perhaps they can get a reasonable liberal on in the evening. I can't stand listening to either radical Mike Malloy OR milqetoast Alan Colmes after 7...

72. That would be...
... Lynn Samuels (the screetchy, irritating lady). I'm not a fan either. Not only is her voice like nails on a chalkboard, but she doesn't talk politics half the time, and when she does, her views are irritatingly apostate.

38. IT'S FUCKED! Losing Randi Rhodes is the biggest lost-Schultz is an ASSHOLE
Edited on Mon Jul-11-05 04:50 PM by Zinfandel
There's no two ways about that, moderate fuck...

But losing Randi is truly painful...Mike Malloy also is a major radio loss for me. However, I did read where Malloy will be coming on thee hours later on XM in favor of another fucking moderate, Alan Colmes...(So I'm not so sure now, I want to switch to XM).

Bit by bit they dilute the only liberal progressive radio voice...

Serious "Left" is a fucking JOKE! Besides Thom Hartmann there's no one even close...Samuels, Miller, and I suppose, Bennett, aren't bad.

But Shultz, Wall St Report, Colmes and Stephan are truly disgusting...

And, I was just getting use to the great AAR week-end line-up on Sirius too.

This sucks the big one, I bought my Sirius equipment and subscription solely for AAR, now...

Fucking AAR!

48. Me too. AAR was the ONLY reason we bought Sirius.
It makes me sick. We bought 2 receivers and 2 boomboxes with a LIFETIME subcsription on one receiver :grr: and THAT sucks BIG TIME! It's a total fucking waste of our money now because AAR was all we ever listened to. I did listen to the 1 hour of Thom Hartmann this morning and LOVED him, but he's only on for an hour! Maybe they'll put Hartmann on 144 in a new lineup. :( I think this whole AAR thing stinks. They SCREWED a BUNCH of people by doing this.

Who the hell wants to listen to Alan Colmes??????? NOT ME! Ed Schultx sounds too much like Rush Limpballs and make s me want to throw up and Lynn Samuels??? 'nuff said!

I'm mad too. AAR should be ashamed.

63. I'm right with you, dude!!! I'm glad you got turnned on to Thom Hartmann
Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 02:59 AM by LaPera
though...He is truly excellent and a true liberal progressive...You can also pick up his complete shows each day on White Rose Society.
www.whiterosesociety.org

I also bought two Sirius boom boxes, two receivers, antenna extenions,
A mobile cradle and home stereo cradle...

Why? Not to listen to fucking Ed Shultz? or the rest of the moderates on Sirius Left? It pisses me off completely.

Fucking AAR!!!!

52. Yeah, so did i... Sirius had complete AAR programming, so my choice was
clear. And i've really grown to love Morning Sedition. Mark and Mark are great, and a whole four luscious hours of Randi- :loveya: , Mike Malloy and Laura Flanders- great line-up...

Dump Franken and give Kath her own show, i say!

But alas, still no programming change at XM. They still show Colmes and "Lil Ed" Shultz.

As soon as XM has the SAME programming AAR streams I'm signing on.

Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 03:02 AM by Zinfandel
on the XM AAR channel. I'll tune to AAR via the internet before I'll buy a half ass AAR schedule on XM.

So I guess I'll be staying with Sirius for a while at least even if it's AAR-less...They do have great music channels and Thom Hartmann.

So again, I'm back to the internet to hear AAR.

What a fucking drag!

73. To be fair....
Wall Street Journal report and Doug Stephan are just filler... although, it's worth noting that Doug Stephan was carried by i.e. America, the failed prototype for the two major liberal networks.

45. Screwed as all this might be....
we could always go back to solely listening to Porky, Colmes's pimp, Loofah Boy, and the Self-Hating Jew...remember how fun THAT was?

Springer, I'm sure, is slowly learning that radio and TV are two different animals...he'll get the hang of it. Everyone has given the right wing blowhards time enough to get their chops, I say let him get HIS! His occasional rants are kind of like a Mike Malloy-lite: empassioned, but without the venom. Sort of like coffee in the day, Jack Daniels at night; I like BOTH, LOL!

AAR has only been on for over a year, they STILL have the kinks to work out. Had the left started their talk radio drive immediately when they saw the threat arise with Rush Limbaugh's emergence and rise to prominence in the early to mid nineties (as well as his surrogates), they would have had everything ironed out long ago.

I do agree that AAR needs to find some way to bring Stephanie Miller on the air there; they also need to back off of all the "Best of" shows when a host is on vacation. Stephanie could very easily fill in for Randi Rhodes, though I think she's better suited to her own show.
Rachel Maddow could also do more weekend and fill-in work, as opposed to having a one-hour show at 4 in the morning (Central time). I'm not sure if he's too much into politics these days, but Phil Hendrie is another one AAR could look at for guest hosts-can you imagine Margaret Gray and Bobbi Dooley wreaking havoc on unsuspecting AAR callers? Um-hmmmmmmmm! LOL!

49. XM's lineup isn't that great and not ALL AAR
I too was listening to Alex Bennett and loved how he gave it to AAR. Randi did mention it once or twice when the news first came out and she isn't happy with the move but has to live with it.

Actually, I think this is a great opportunity for Sirius to showcase some additional progressive talent. They can use 144 to increase Tom Hartmann's time to 3 hours and I *believe* that Randi is syndicated so can't they pick up Randi's show through syndication? Also, Mike Malloy has been relegated to the 1am slot which really stinks.

At first I was regretting getting Sirius, but now I'm happy. AAR was put together to combat the corporate media and now they're one of them. I know the money is needed, but from what I understand, it was Randi Rhodes who really started the whole thing and she CAN generate funding -- Frankin was added as the "name". In addition, Sirius was running their entire lineup, no changes. XM has added Ed Schultz (OK but more of an entertainer than believer and sounds too much like Limbaugh) and Alan "I have no backbone" Colmes.

Should be interesting to see what happens to AAR and market share.

Paula

54. She did apologize to Sirius listeners for what has happened....
and that she neither liked nor supported the decision by AAR to switch to XM. That was the crux of it...

I personally suggest those who are with Sirius to call and actually write-do NOT email!- BOTH AAR and Sirius and raise HOLY HELL. It serves TWO purposes: one it lets both sides know you guys are NOT happy with the way things have transpired; the right presents a common front, and the LAST thing we need is our dirty laundry being aired out in front of them....two, it may get more of us in the habit of calling and writing our congressmen and senators, once you experience the pleasure of hearing the harried voices of phone operators who've been flooded with 500 angry calls in the past hour, LOL! Corporations HATE having their call centers flooded!

56. I already wrote them
and they did not respond. I refuse to waste my money or minutes on a phone call. Fuck them. I was getting tired of most of their programming anyway. Randi was the highlight and XM is only airing half of her show. So I expect her to move on - maybe to Sirius left :)

I can watch Al Franken on Sundance.

I really did not like Gerafalo's show much. But I am glad to hear she at least did the decent thing and tried to apologize. I may send her a thank you letter.

65. Signed off Sirius yesterday
As I told them previously, I signed up for Air America and left when they dropped Air America. That's 3 less tuners Sirius gets income from. Many on this forum buy into the AAR spin that XM, that suddenly, after one year of only airing a partial amount of Air America XM wanted Air America soooooo much they demanded exclusive rights, but I don't buy into it any more than I buy into the white house spin on Iraq. Neither Sirius nor XM has any idea how many listeners frequent any channel, they only guess. Sirius is betting there are not too many people that really listened to Air America, and as more and more stay, they prove Sirius made the correct decision to drop Air America. Air America on the other hand can not say they were dropped because they would be admitting that Sirius dropped them, not the other way around - so it's a catch 22 - Air America needs current Sirius listeners to show Sirius they support Air America, but they can't openly admit what is going on or the right wingers will say it's the end of Air America, so we get the XM exclusive 4 million vs 1 mllion spin. Yes, it's Air America's fault for not planning ahead and likewise Air America fans on Sirius hold some responsiblilty for not letting Sirius know they want Air America. We dropped Sirius but do not plan on going back to XM.

66. What a slick way for the right-wing to dilute liberal radio, own XM and
buy exclusive satellite radio rights from Air America Radio and then put in a bunch of fucking moderates in place of AAR people... Cut the kick-ass Randi Rhodes show in half and move the true hard core liberal, Mike Malloy, essentially off the air, (1 am to 4 am?).

And it looks like the greedy AAR decided to say fuck the diluting of AAR and fuck the Sirius subscribers too!

Money was more important than scruples.

67. I don't think there is any conspiracy
It's more out of ignorance, the people running Air America are too knew at this and are not prepared to deal with the system. Even though they all realize how politics work, they don't know how the radio business works. I was angry at Air America, more becasue they didn't prepare - they didn't use their listeners enough to let Sirius know AAR is important to them, and unfortunately, many former AAR listeners on Sirius are tuning against AAR rather than supporting them, allowing the right wingers at Sirius to say no one really listened or cared about Air America. At least we can still see Al on Sundance, maybe they will pick up others too, I would like to see Randi and Mike on Sundance as well.
