I haven't seen too many threads removed, but threads are routinely moved if they are not appropriate for that particular forum. Also, threads in LBN (News forum) sometimes get locked if they are duplicates of another thread (if they are about the same article). I don't really see the development you're talking about.

. . . my post in a London thread was deleted without any mention from the mods. The most benign post you could imagine. I asked the OP, who didn't understand why it had been deleted, and I sent an email to the mods. I have yet to hear back from the admin and it's been a couple of days now. I eventually re-posted my comment to the thread. I haven't checked to see it it's missing again. Something is definitely up. I wonder what's going on. :(

If the Admin want to go in this direction (a 'la Kos) - that is one thing. If it is certain other elements - that is another.

Some take a far more conservative POV than others and are trying to make the board fit their POV IMO.

That thread is not showing up on the "Greatest Page" because I unlinked it, an action which allows the thread to go on, and the number of recommendations on it to continue to show, but it no longer appears on the Greatest page.

I chose to do this because the thread has become extremely heated, and now complaints about moderator actions nearly outnumber posts on the original topic in the thread. It has not fallen off our radar screen, but by consensus has been allowed to go on for a while. It is difficult for me to read all of the negative remarks about moderators, one in particular, and all of us in general. In most circumstances, a good number of posts in that thread would be deleted for disrespecting mods and admins. For now, most are being allowed to stand.

I hope you do not see my rather mild action as an attempt at censorship; it certainly was not intended that way. A great deal of latitude is being allowed in this case at present. Please feel free to PM me about my unlinking action if I can help answer questions. You are also free to contact the admins about your concerns on that action and on the other thread in general.

The fact that the Mod was being attacked is - in my opinion - one of the most valuable aspects of the thread.

The OP asked why threads were being deleted and tossed into 9-11. The Mod told us why with his attitude. It is a big deal, as many posters have noted.

The thread has 2-3 "Conspiracy Theorists are Whackos" and 35+ posters who want answers, and are digging.

This issue needs to be discussed w/ Admins and mods.

I still think any post voted onto the Greatest Page ought to be on the Greatest Page. It's a democratic thing. I want to know my vote counts, from national elections to the Greatest Page to any crazy Lounge poll. And in that particular thread, I am obviously not alone.

Worse is that the thread is about freedom of speech. We live in an age when freedom of speech is already being undermined. It feels bad to learn what we thought to be a free speech free zone (DU) is limiting speech in this way.

I appreciate the crap the Mods have to go through/put up with/take here at DU. My wanting that thread up on the Greatest in no way disparages the Mods. It is a difference of opinion, that's all.

I hope you understand that that attitude is part of the problem. You and another poster are not really understanding one another -- not assigning blame one way or the other -- just saying -- and you ascribe this problem to a group of people, of which so me may fully understand exactly what you are saying and agree with you.
