LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- A Lake Worth, Fla., man admits to killing his girlfriend's 3-year-old son because he accidentally wet his pants.

At first, Walfrido Pina told police the child slipped in the tub, and he let him languish for five hours before the mother insisted they go to the hospital. Then, police said, he confessed to shaking the boy.

Now, following an autopsy, detectives said it's clear the boy was also severely beaten.

Pina admitted to detectives that instead of taking his girlfriend's son, Elias, to daycare, he brought the child to a Motel 6 and killed him, West Palm Beach, Fla., television station WPBF reported.

We are living in a society where intelligence is not rewarded, where stupidity is seen as strength. While everyone's favorite idiot, shrub, is a living example of the dangers of stupidity, this is a problem that has been facing our country for the past twenty years when this whole "conservative movement" got going under reagan.

Is this directly connected to the lack of education? No, but inferences can be made all over society.

It's not limited to education. Someone with a PhD can beat and kill people. But a less educated society has an increase in violent behavior.

11. The rethugs are such violent people. Got a Kerry sticker, get run off the

road. Disagree, they defact your property. Their first reaction to everything is to blow it up. If someone voices disent, they are ready to smear you publically and ruin your life. They may have had a hand in Andy's surgery being delayed. They are just so overwhelming in their force.

This mindset is infiltrating everything. I am terrified for our country as this belief in peace through greater firepower continues to oversweep the nation.

I know I'm turning one story about adult violence against a child into a huge social discussion, but how many times do we see these stories. And if violence is used to distract us from other violence, what does that say about us?

In my humble little opinion, outing Plame was an act of violence because rover did not care the outcome to her or Joe Wilso or their family. There is a possibility that over 90 people may have lost their lives doe to her outing. This is an act of violence, even without raising a fist.

a cycle of violence. The divide between the thinkers and the thugs is quite apparent, too, is it not?

But this reliance on force to accomplish one's goals is a brutish thing that, as you say, is infiltrating society.

In public discourse: opposing sides toss insults back and forth, the Repub usually is LOUDEST, RUDEST. Interrupts and openly ridicules opponent.

In traffic: buying biggest, baddest vehicle (armored vehicles for SUVs?); aggressive driving; road rage.

At work: ends justifies the means...no integrity, no loyalty, and the most aggressive competitor is the most admired. Predatory business practices prevail.

In entertainment: more and more "realistic" fights and killings in movies. Concept of beauty reduced to an ideal of appearance that makes instant "talent"...used much like a weapon to "win" one's aims.

In law enforcement: kill the "bad guys"...even if it means a few innocent bystanders are caught in the crossfire (it's all the bad guys' fault anyway)...concept of innocent until proven guilty is GONE in society.

In religion: God is no longer an entity of love and mercy, but is a vengeful and bloodthirsty diety. He delights in, even demands, the death of infidels and sinners. The righteous are justified in their actions since they can be seen as acting FOR God.

All of these things are reflections of a sort of coarsening of values. A trust in force over reason. In fact any attempt to use reason is considered WEAK!!!

Umm...I gotta figure that humans rose to their evolutionary position because of having and using that mass of gray matter within their skulls. Consequently, if rational humans USE their brains, they should be able to overcome the more brutish element of society, since that capacity to reason and to show compassion is the source of real power which will trump force in the end.

children whose brains were formed under stress are less able to concentrate and behave in the classroom. they are less economically successful as a result. they have fewer options for survival. it is a complex web. the education part is just another symptom, not the cause.

my four year old and say a little prayer for that poor little boy. What the hell is wrong with people? This goes way beyond discipline, its brutality at its worst. And sadly it seems that children pay over and over for this kind of reckless and cruel behavior. Sad indeed.
