Brit chief weapons inspector who was suicided--after whistleblowing on Blair's "sexing up" of Iraq WMD intel--around the same time that Miller was apparently helping to launder the disclosure of Valerie Plame's identity to reporters (on behalf of Cheney, Libby and/or Rove), thus destroying a 20+ year CIA information-gathering project, with eyes and ears all over the world, on WMDs.
People change. And they may get into an issue and it changes THEM. I think that may have been what happened to David Kelly. Kelly favored in the invasion of Iraq. But he became conscience-stricken, AFTER the invasion, about the falsification of Iraq WMD intel that had occurred BEFORE the invasion. He whistleblew on it to the BBC in summer '03 (just after the invasion). He was soon found dead under highly suspicious circumstances. The question I have is not whether or not he was assassinated--I think he surely was--but why? First of all, what prompted his change of heart about the cooked intel, and, secondly, what prompted his assassination? What he said to the BBC was embarrassing to Blair, but not sufficient motive to murder him. (And the matter at issue was the WORDING of the docs--a matter that could be endlessly argued and fuzzed up.) I think he was murdered because of something ELSE he knew. My guess is a plot ot PLANT WMDs in Iraq.
One of Kelly's last emails was to Judith Miller--the one in which he was concerned about "many dark actors playing games." Odd to find Judith Miller in that loop--recipient of his final thoughts and perhaps darkest fears.
The Blairites treated Kelly abominably--hounded him, outed his name to the press, interrogated him in secret, and forced him to testify at a Parliamentary committee meeting. Then let him go home without protection. (He was notorious by then.) And he was soon dead--having purportedly slit one wrist, slightly, and taken his wife's painkillers, out in the open, near his home, under tree. (This guy was a scientist--and a guy! And a strong guy--very strong-willed, feisty guy.) (The "Lord Hutton" inquiry ignored eyewitness and expert testimony--and the testimony of friends--and concluded "suicide"--a whitewash, if I ever read one.) (No suicide note; no sign whatsoever of depression; looking forward to his daughter's wedding and returning to Iraq; thought it would all blow over in a week.)
Anyway, the Blairites were all in a tither about Kelly's whistleblowing--running scared, it seems to me. They seemed VERY WORRIED about what Kelly might know and say. Was all this tither because he'd said they'd "sexed up" the intel docs? (Most people with any brain cells at all knew or suspected that anyway.) Or was it something worse?
I think it had to have been something worse--such as a plot to plant WMDs--because of the timing of his whistleblowing. His change of heart. It's possible that the brutality of the Bush regime--the bombing of Baghdad, etc.--got to him. (He loved Iraq and had friends there.) But horror at the dishonesty of a plot to plant WMDs would seem to fit him more. He was very concerned about WMDs. It was his life. He felt he was doing good in the world. He prided himself on doing his job well. He loved science. That kind of naked dishonesty--planting WMDs--would likely have alarmed and angered him.
Judith Miller, meanwhile--after printing all kinds of false info on Iraq WMDs on the front pages of the NYT--was over in Iraq just after the invasion, helping the troops hunt for WMDs, egging them on, criticizing them for not looking hard enough--to the great annoyance of the local commanders--and seemed very disappointed that none were found.
Maybe back when she wrote "Germs," she had a genuine concern for WMD warfare, true admiration for Clinton who shared her concern, and was not yet hooked up with the bad guys in the Bush Cartel, and got sucked into their vortex after 9/11; or maybe she was laying down a "Mata Hari" identity all along, cozying up to honest people like David Kelly, spying on them and feeding info on them to arms dealers like Cheney, and jumped right in to promote Bush Cartel war propaganda, post 9/11, and consciously acted as the launderer for the Plame outing.
And both things could be true: initial genuine concern about WMDs, and later war propagandist and traitor. (As I said, people change, or an issue can change THEM.)
It is too simplistic to think that an honest recounting of Clinton's concern for WMDs would somehow debar Miller from becoming a Bush Cartel errand girl. (Clinton played along with the war and attended the usurper's coronation, if you'll recall. You think this man is a saint because he ran a relatively peaceful and honest presidency, accumulated a budget surplus, and tried to get the military to accept its gay members--that is, because he is a Democrat? He also permitted the development of depleted uranium weapons, signed NAFTA into law with no worker or environmental protections whatsoever, and bombed Iraq's borders and starved Iraqi children and let them die for lack of medicine. Judith Miller, warmonger and shill for the military-corporate complex, would have no problem with Clinton, unless she were just a Limbaugh dittohead, which she is not.)
I admit that this point in "Germs" is interesting, and I'm glad you brought it up. It reminded me that Kelly was a major source for the book, that he ended up dead, and that his death closely coincides with the Plame outing.
A world in peril from WMDs--and the CIA's ability to track them is destroyed, and Britain's chief expert on them is no longer with us. All happening in summer '03, when Bush/Blair's most critical political need was a find of WMDs in Iraq. As Alice (in "Wonderland") would say: "Things are getting curiouser and curiouser."

The answer to the stink in Washington DC is restoring our right to vote, by throwing Bushite electronic voting machine companies--Diebold, ES&S and brethren--out of the election business NOW--or at the least achieving some measure of election transparency with paper ballot backups, no secret programming code and strict auditing. The only place where we can get that done is in state/local jurisdictions, where the authority over election systems still resides, and where ordinary people still have some say.
