Under the "old rules"...
(unwritten of course) of politics, Scottie would be announcing his resignation about now...

You see, he has no credibility left. He spent it, or, more precisely, squandered it spinning the WH lies early on in this investigation. Under the "old rules" that should be fatal to his position.

Under the "old rules" John Kennedy deliberately withheld information from his press secretary during the Cuban Missile Crisis because, as he later told the secretary, "I didn't want my Press Secretary in the position of deliberately deceiving the press corps". Those were the "old rules". If you lie, then you lose your credibility and then you are no longer fit for the job. Credibility is the currency of public relations.

Scottie was put in the postion to deliberately deceive the press corps, and by extension, the American people. He has spent his currency. He is bankrupt: morally and professionally bankrupt.

2. Yeah
This is definately true - odds are they will keep Scottie despite the fact that he has either lied or passed on lying information.

Well we are acting a bit like this is a fait accompli (that Rove is definately been found guilty). We will have to see what they do if and when Rove is actually found guilty.

3. Under 'old rules,' WH didn't pay reporters, credential fake reporters,
...let political hacks run the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and turn it into just another right-wing mouthpiece under the guise of "balance," rewrite the conclusions of scientific studies to please their corporate masters, stamp policy documents "Classified," set energy policy in smoke-filled rooms, treat access to government officials as a perk doled out only to pliant reporters and stations that parrot White House talking points, or use taxpayer money to produce propaganda videos that look just like news reports and then send them to TV stations and encourage them to run their propaganda without attribution as legitimate news stories.

11. and under the old rules
Bush the Elder's presidential papers would be open to the public. Another one of Bush the Dumber's assaults on our right to government by informed consent.

4. Two pigs with one lie?
"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."

5. Raise a great question
"...shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie."

Yes, it's true. The truth can be surpressed for a certain period of time but the consequences of the war and the disasterous course of the economy cannot be obscured by lies forever. Eventually the truth will become obvious to all.

And just what will happen when it is exposed?

What's their plan for that day when the truth stands in sharp contrast to the lies?

7. Excellent observation
Are these the new rules?

It does not matter what you do or say you will not be held accountable for your lies.

No need to make plausible denial when you simply deny everything.

Always blame someone else, never accept responsibility or consequences for your actions.

Involve everyone around you in your blanket falsehood, that way they have a stake in maintaining your lies.

In most countries that have a legal process people with these beliefs are incarcerated.

8. Rules?
Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 10:41 AM by berni_mccoy
This administration has none. Old or otherwise.

I doubt PuffyMcMoonFace will get fired or resign over this.

Under no rules, Bush doesn't have to fire him and Puffy doesn't need to resign.

Kicked and nominated.

9. Idle speculation
I wonder, sometimes, if the fools siding with these traitors ever, EVER realize they, themselves, put themseves out as bait. Because, when needed, they are sacraficed, and will be, every time. Never trust a liar. For some reason, so many seem to want to play with these dangerous folks, apparently thinking, for some reason, they're safer that way. When, in reality, they are far LESS safe that way. Going along and playing their game, they don't seem to realize they are ALSO agreeing to be scapegoats.

I hope it catches a lot of them by surprise, I really do, I'm just mean that way. Lying cowardly jerks; you people, you neocons, you KNEW what these people were all about. You KNEW they were perverting the constitution, you KNEW they are murders. You went along, thinking it would benefit you too, but didn't realize they were never on YOUR side at all. They use YOU, same as they use the nation.

Stupid pawns. I do hope they realize it.

12. I'm wondering if we'll see them turn on each other
since the neocons are really a coalition. You got your Israeli firsters, your oil firsters, and your Armageddon firsters. And then you've got your assorted privateers and gangsters. Who's gonna come out on top when someone has to be sacrificed?

10. Why don't we get all these "unwritten rules" in writing?
apparently we need a code of decency for our public officials - some kind of contract they sign to raise the bar back up again and prevent this crap from happening in every administration.
