1. Military suicides result from desperation
that's their only option.

8. Agreed
I believe it's typically done when the person feels they have no voice, no power, no influence, and no other way to redress their grievance.

3. We can never hope to win--they want imperialist out of their country
stealing their resources, killing their people and building permanent US military bases.

5. It tells me
It tells me that those suicide bombers just aren't watching enough tv. They're too damn emotional, and too attached to their freakin' values.

Boneheads. Now, if they'd just take an interest in American Idle or Cartoon Network, they would find something worth thinking about.

6. Religion is a huge factor
They believe that the big invisible superhero in the sky will reward them for carrying out his war against rival gods.

See just about any war for countless examples of humans dieing more willingly because they were holy soldiers of this lord or that.

Any religion that dared to say "Go to war and you go to hell" would get no support from those who benefit from war.

9. I wonder just how much religion can motivate these bombers

to take their lives.

I'll wager that there are more than a handful of tragic tales behind the actors behind these attacks that involve barbarous slaughter of family and friends by our military in Bush's indiscriminate wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Does it matter that our own countries violence may have motivated these killings?

13. Not exactly
Muslims believe there is one God. The fundamentalists believe they are doing the work of this one God against misled heathens (Christian fundamentalists and Zionists believe the same thing).

When people are sent to war, they find solace in religion. It doesn't mean religion started the war, just that it was used as either convenient superficial justification or as a way of soldiers not going insane.

Many religions DO condemn war, but it is twisted to serve the ill aims of those who encourage needless violence. It's all about interpretation.

14. Also there is a vast majority of Muslims who aren't motivated to suicide
or violence in support of their religion.

There almost have to be outside aggravating factors that compel such individual actions.

just yesterday there was a study that said politics, not religion, cause
terrorism. But then again some people will blame their hangnails on a belief in the afterlife, so...

7. A demonstration that religion is a very powerful motivator
and that when it is employed on the weak willed it can convince them to do almost anything.

18. Religion has little to do with it
Kamikazes were not a threat until WWII looked hopeless for the Japanese. Although there were Shinto rituals involved, the chief motivation was to strike at the enemy. It was virtually the only way they had left.

Sort of like Muslim warriors now.

10. A level of desperation I hope I never, ever feel.
I'll never forget the story about a young Palestinian woman (doctor, no less) who held her innocent brother as he died from mortal wounds received by military action. She attached a bomb to her body.

There was no hope whatsoever for justice; no possibility of legal proceedings.

Horrible.

11. It means they have
no "smart bombs" or cruise missiles, but they have people that are willing to die to deliver the weapon they do have.
