Generally, when a conservative Republican starts quoting the Bible, my eyes roll back in my head in preparation for the inevitable God-thinks-your-liberal-sins-are-worse-than-our-sins verbal smiting.
But in announcing that he’s almost ready to announce his candidacy for Illinois governor in 2006, state Sen. Steve Rauschenberger of Elgin gives a fresh spin to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount advice about taking abuse. “Too many of us have turned the other cheek,” proclaims Rauschenberger, who fires back at the “moral relativism” in his own party.
At Monday’s news conference in a Chicago hotel, Rauschenberger makes a campaign issue out of GOP National Committeeman Bob Kjellander making a campaign issue out of Rauschenberger’s decade-old drunken-driving conviction.
“Anybody who gets behind the wheel of a car drunk doesn’t belong in the state Senate, much less the governor’s mansion,” reads a note Kjellander wrote on a solicitation form Rauschenberger mailed to Republicans.
“In light of his proposed litmus test for the Illinois state Senate and for governor, Mr. Kjellander’s comments lead to many questions, beginning with whether or not he believes President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney ‘belong’ in the positions they currently hold,” Rauschenberger quips...
