Red states lead in rape - Tell Santorum
After reading of Santorum's liberalism-rape assertion ( http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2005/07/13/santorum_resolute_on_boston_rebuke/ )
I did a little research at the Bureau of Justice Statistics:
http://bjsdata.ojp.usdoj.gov/dataonline/Search/Crime/State/TrendsInOneVar.cfm

Of the top 20 states in per capita rapes, 16 are red states.

caveat - I am not a statistician.

Here is a poorly formatted table:

3. McCain's quote about Santorum in that article is hilarious
''I think he probably has written off Massachusetts," said Senator John McCain, an Arizona Republican who is also a potential 2008 contender.

4. Ted Kennedy kicked Santorum's butt
about this on the Senate Floor this morning. He mentioned three Republican Senators who attended schools in Mass. One was Frist, one was Bob Dole. Kennedy said that Mass. had the lowest divorce rate in the Nation. At the end of Kennedy's rant, he demanded that Santorum apologize to the people of Massachusetts.

6. Well, not so fast.
If you average 3 years (2000-2002), you will find 4 out of top 6 states are blue. One of the 2 remaining "red" states is NM, which should actually be blue, and the other is Alaska.

9. one thing to keep in mind....
especially with regards to those two red states in the top, is that some places will have low rape rates due to low reporting. It wouldn't surprise me if a place like Alaska doesn't encourage women to report, or if authorities don't record it properly, or if police officers intimidate women out of reporting. So even if dumbshit Santorum were right -- which he's obviously not -- he needs to realize that what he's talking about is reported rapes, not actual rapes. There really isn't any way of KNOWING how many rapes have occurred anywhere, but obviously Craptorum wouldn't think that far ahead.
