Offensive GOP t-shirts
Edited on Fri Sep-26-03 08:07 AM by Iris
Apparently these are being sold by College Republicans. Is there any doubt that this is the party of hatred, racism, and ignorance?

"The e-mail includes a photo of the shirts. One says, "No Muslims No Terrorism." Another has a photo of black filmmaker Spike Lee and the message, "Bring back the blacklist." A third shows a photo of lesbian TV personality Rosie O'Donnell and her partner with the line "Mr. (?) and Mrs. (?) Rosie O'Donnell." Another says, "The Clinton Legacy" and shows the World Trade Center after a plane crashed into it. "

Kerry is using this as a fundraiser, but this needs to be attacked by all Democratic candidates.

Here's a link to the article (which is mainly about Kerry):

It's on Salon, so you may not be able to read the whole thing if you are not a member. I think you can sign up for a 1 day pass, though!

1. Pure horseshit
"We sold over 50 tables to vendors. We didn't monitor every single product of every single vendor," Joyslin said. "Obviously our organization wouldn't endorse any statements of the sort that I saw on the Internet."

Wow...50 whole tables??? Yeah, must have been hard to monitor.

I worked a Dean booth at the Stark County Fair a month ago...there were over 150 tables there, and EVERY ONE of them were checked for divisive stuff every single day. At a small county fair, they can do it.

And we're expected to believe that the College Repukes are innocent and DIDN'T KNOW????

Horseshit.

6. And can you imagine the uproar from the poor,
neglected, underrepresented, minority, misunderstood repukes if the Dems had done something like that? WHEN are people going to wake up and see the repukes for what they really are and start making them pay for it at the voting booth?

2. Most offensive
The most offensive one I saw, to me, was visually very simple. It had a line from Bush's speech right after 9/11. "You are either with us or with the Enemy."

Next to the "us" was an elephant and next to the Enemy was a donkey. I posted the picture to my Website ( http://www.politicalcomment.blogspot.com/2003_08_24_politicalcomment_archive.html#106184514013003047 )--need to scan the bumper sticker I got.

They want to win at any cost, and for them victory is the descruction of the Democratic party and the Liberal movement. Fortunately those who feel this way are not the majority of their party, yet (although certainly some of their leaders buy into this mentality).

3. yes, but if they are the minority, then what does that say
about the majority, who silently stand by and let this crap go on?

5. I've thought about this somewhat
I mean my conservative friends mention to me about the lawless actiosn of some demonstrators and "If you liberals are decent people, why don't you put a stop to this?" I think there are idiots in both parties, and it is hard to stop them.

It's also true that I can find President Bush quotes where he seems to oppose looking at liberals this way (although his followers would assume he didn't mean it). But I think it would be nice if he were to stand up and say that while we all have different ideas and beliefs, we all want a strong and successful and just America.

7. yes. I have heard the quotes by Bush which said that the people
against the war simply had a different opinion than he did. He was passionate about it and also had the press and the scapegoating of the Dixie Chicks to fuel his fire.

I still don't think the actions of a few zealots on our side nearly outweigh the damage the jerks on their side do. In fact, this weekend, the Christian Coalition and the KKK will be demonstrating in Barrow County, GA, where another judge has refused to remove a copy of the 10 commandments.

I mean, we have police and military to take care of criminals, but what can be said about these 2 groups getting together on a courthouse square? Sure, they have the right to do it, but would they feel as compelled to do it if they were treated like the pariah they are?

8. Hmmmm
Let me say here that I passionately hope that we get rid of President Bush in 2004--I plan on voting against him; I think he's been a disaster for the United States. And I generally support progressive causes (although not all of them).

2 things. I'd be a bit more careful about equating the Christian Coalition and the KKK. While I'm certainly no fan of the Christian Coalition, I am a Christian, and I suspect many other Democrats are too.

Secondly, you are dead on when you say that President Bush can come accross as reasonable because he has a whole right wing media (speaking specifically of the Right Wing Media, Rush Limbaugh, Washington Times, Wall Street Journal Editorial Page, Fox News, and dozens of columnists) to be mean for him. I hope that whoever gets the nomination, and assuming there are any debates says, "Mr. President, Mr. Rush Limbaugh has charectarized liberalism as a mental disease. Ms. Ann Coulter has charectarized Liberals as traitors and slanderers. These comments are coming from your party. DO you feel they are appropriate or accurate?" Unfortunately, the debates probably won't allow the Demcoratic candidate to hammer this point home.

9. Sorry, but when the Christian Coalition marches with the KKK,
Edited on Fri Sep-26-03 09:25 AM by Iris
that says a lot. And if Democrats who are Christians don't see that, then this country deserves the likes of George W. Bush.

Maybe I didn't mention this, but the Christian Coalition decided to march AFTER the KKK had petitioned for a permit.

10. It does say a fair amount
But there are different ways to put it; do you feel that Christians have a place in the Democratic Party? (I assume you do, don't want to take an accusatory tone). Many Democratic Christians would quickly point out that the actions of the Christian Coalition do not represent Christianity.

And could I get a link on that KKK/Christian Coalition story?

11. The Christian Coaltion apparently represents Conservative Christians.
I think their marching with the KKK pretty much shows what they believe.

I was raised in a Christian family and NOTHING in my upbringing would suggest that this is the way a Christian would act.

Link to the story please?

And on what basis do you claim that the Christian Coalition represents Conservative Christians?

15. I think it is fairly obvious.

In fact, I don't know why anyone in the Christian Coalition would be a Democrat.

As for the link, I saw it on the local news and have been looking at their websites to find something. It does appear, however, that they put the 2 groups together in their report without discerning the days, so they may, in fact, not be protesting on the same day.

The Ku Klux Klan is protesting with a local Christian church that has been in a lot of trouble lately for beating children in public during their services.

16. here's a link. The local news
Edited on Fri Sep-26-03 01:13 PM by Iris
did not even mention the black church group that is actually going to be there the same day as the KKK. Rather, they lumped in the Christian Coalition and the KKK as if they were going to be there on the same day. Some shoddy reporting. Usually I'm pretty good at picking out their inconsistencies. Nonetheless, I had inaccurate information. My mistake. Here's the link anyway:

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/2513733/detail.html

I still don't understand how the Christian Coaltion could not be right wing.

17. Opposite point
My point wasn't to say that the Christian Coalition wasn't conservative, but to say some Christian Conservatives might not see eye to eye with the Christian Coalition. They might be more moderate and less dogmatic.

12. Was about to post this too
This just goes to show that alot of these college Republican kids are real scary people. AT thta young age, they have to be angry at someone to identify with the right. The fact that these t-shirt vendors weren't told to get packing is disturbing. How many kids there bought these t-shirts?

It would be interesting to make up some really offensive t-shirts, and as an experiment, go to a GOP event and see how many you sell. You know, how about some ideas like, "I only use my gun to shoot Liberals", or "Welfare is for Sluts".
