Re: California Recall: I think Cruz Bustamante should withdraw
More and more I'm beginning to think that Gray Davis had the right strategy from the beginning--let him stand alone with no Dems getting into the recall election and letting voters choose between him and the motley crew of Republicans wanting to take his job away. Man, are they a sorry lot.

I can't say I've been overly impressed by Cruz Bustamante either. He just doesn't seem to come across well imo. For a Democratic state he isn't even doing all that well in the polls--between 25-30 percent only. Plus he seems to have gotten into a snafu regarding Indian gaming money.

I watched the debate and thought--none of these guys is coming across very well--I should say guys and gal. Last night I watched on C-SPAN a town hall meeting with Gov. Davis and to my surprise he with comfortable, well-spoken, and articulate. He came across very well.

He seems to be moving up in the polls, most recent Field poll I think it was 50/45 in favor of Recall. I think the more people see and hear his opponents the less fervor there is in recalling Davis.

I think perhaps Lt. Gov Bustamante should withdraw and give a strong endorsement to Gov. Davis. If he wants to be Governor he should try in 2006.

6. It's too bad she's not doing better...
It's also too bad she hasn't written he column for two months now!! If she had kept writing it, she might be getting that much more exposure... instead of losing the progressive vote to Bustamante...

2. Well,
I also think it would be nice is President Bush resigned, if Bill Frist resigned, if Rush Limbaugh retired, and so on. But I can't reasonably demand that they do it (except possibly in the case of President Bush).

Bustamante has spent a lot of money and time on his campaign--why, from his perspective, should he drop out at this late point and flush all that money and time down the toilet?

3. probably not
but he probably should have stuck with the Davis strategy from the beginning. But as you say he has gone this far and he probably will stick it out.

4. In his defense
Did he know it was going to go this way? I mean looking at it 8 weeks ago, I could envision Arnold stomping his way all the way to the top. I didn't realize exactly how dopey he really was. So mounting a challenge was maybe his best shot.

5. Bustamante was ELECTED in a general election to be Lt Governor
Edited on Fri Sep-26-03 09:05 AM by SoCalDem
the governor's position SHOULD be his if, for ANY reason, the governor is no longer serving.. The fact that he even HAS to run for an office that should automatically BE his, infuriates me..

Millions of people elected him and Davis in November, and the right wingers immediately set out to UNDO the election because THEY did not like the way it turned out..

Well Boo-Hoo.. We have had a lot of suspicious elections that WE did not like, and were told repeatedly, to ...Get over it..Move on..Look to the future..Quit whining...

The only logical thing to do now is to VOTE NO , and then just in case , vote FOR Bustamante..

If things work out correctly, the recall will fail, but the scarier thing is that the two propositions that they just HAD to sneak in on the recall ballot, MAY actually pass.. Anything that Connerly is in favor of, sahould automatically be suspect..

It's at times like these that I wish there was an alternate universe for the republican to inhabit.. I am getting very weary of them.. It's like being nibbled to death by gnats..

7. Bustamante has to stay
The Republicans have to win two elections. It's as simple as that.

Plus, Davis is a CRAPPY governor. Go ahead, flame me. I'm voting for the recall.

Former Governor Pete Wilson signed a horrible energy deregulation plan. Out-of-state power wholesalers took advantage of a situation to make huge profits (legally) while sticking it to Californians to the tune of $9 billion. Davis complained to Bush and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to help (they did nothing, predictably). Then he dropped the ball while the state was bleeding and our credit rating was going down the tube.

I want Davis out of here, and so do 30% of CA democrats. Zero leadership.
