To Republican Cowards: "HELP THEM FIND THEIR STRENGTH"
A U.S. Army recruiting ad just aired (Discovery Channel) and it was so obviously targeted at mothers of teenagers it was disgusting. The son says; "I can be about anything I want to be (in the Army), and it's time for me to be the man." Then mommy ponders a moment and then says; "Tell me more."

BTW, the mom and son were black, and I felt it was sleazy target ad pointed directly at single parent minority households. It was an obvious ad to get young black teens to tell their mom's to STFU cuz I'm the man of the house now. Total disgusting bullshit.

1. Yep. We've shredded this ad here before. And with good reason
as per the points you brought up.

5. Whoa - they REALLY sent that to the wrong address!
Too bad they didn't drop by your house in person.

I woulda LOVED to see the expression on their faces about 60-seconds after you started talking!

Also: You get a gold star for *very* appropriate use of the F-word in your reply to the Navy.

10. Who's a vet here?
Under ordinary circumstances, I think any branch of the military is a good way for any person to make something of themselves, gain self-respect and responsibility, and so on. I have know some truly excellent people in all branches throughout my service.

Don't confuse the nobility of the institution with the people who may be temporarily in charge. Remember, their forebears are the ones who made it possible for us to be able to post these messages in the first place.

Any vets out there willing to back me up on this?

in Vietnam, his family very pro military- however
against this crew. I was just protesting with
a Vet for peace. Soldiers GOOD

3. Want to see the whole set of manipulative, deceptive Army ads?
Watch Spike TV. They show re-runs of Star Trek TNG during the day and I can barely watch because every third commercial is Army or Army Reserve. They all advertise that joining the Army will give you strength and purpose and will earn you respect.

I would like to see counter-advertising. Anti-war groups could show vets returned from Iraq who are now homeless, who haven't received med benefits, who haven't magically found strength and purpose during their military service.

I'd also like to see couter-advertising showing young men and women joining organizations serving the poor or elderly in the US - and getting the same reaction from Mom and Dad. There used to be Peace Corps Ads like this.

4. i like how the boy pulls the pamphlet out
Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 01:21 PM by evolved Anarchopunk
from under a shirt or something.. like some (don't flame me) Nazi propaganda. There are too many ways to spit on this type of filth, this commercial to join the largest death squad in the world cannot be "shredded" enough.

I felt ill when i saw it the first time, i feel ill when i think about it now, but i only feel anger if in fact this scene was in any way replicated in households across the US. "Shut the fuck up mom" is right "its time for me to be a man"... so stop being a killing tool you bitch...

edited because i wanted to give Army recruiting one more FUCK YOU... and vernacular

8. Welcome to DU evolved --
Your comment made me think of something that a friend told me when he returned from a trip to Israel/Palestine.

While there he talked to many, many Israelis and Palestinians on all sides of the issues - people in favor of the wall/against the wall; people in favor of expelling all Palestinians/people against expulsion...

He talked to Israelis who lost family in suicide bombings and to a father of a young man who was a suicide bomber. The father spoke passionately when asked about his son - he said that he raised his sons to be lawyers, doctors, not killers. He said that had no idea - none - that his son was associating with people who supported him in carrying out this bombing. The father said (paraphrasing) "If I knew my son had been sick, I would have bound his hands and feet and locked him in his room until he was well again."

Perhaps that is what the mother in the commercial should've considered when her son pulled out the Army pamphlet.

6. I guess if they were going for truth in advertising it would be
"it's time for me to become a paraplegic with PTSD"?

12. The Army wants entomologists
So we are getting unundated n my department with military recruitment e-mails, visits from recruiters, and all kinds of pro-US "we need you" rah-rah bullshit.

They came to me about me joining up and I said simply this:

"You chewed my father up, spit him out, and left him a shell of a man with no support, so I'm not joining your fucking weremacht!"

I never got another email, but those around me continue to do so. Think I pissed em off?

Good.

And don't tell me how great the soldiers are....I know many of them and yes, they are good people. Good people held hostage and given a healthy dose of Stockholm syndrome, but good people nonetheless.
