Word of caution regarding Rovegate
Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 03:20 PM by Walt Starr
Do not expect indictments within days. We're talking weeks here. Most likely around ten weeks to be more precise.

My expectation is indictments will start being handed down some time after Labor Day.

1. I wasn't expecting them soon, necessarily
But you seem to have more specific information -- what are you basing this on?

6. GJ expires in October
Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 03:26 PM by Jersey Devil
so your September scenario makes sense. The GJ will indict, or not indict, whenever Fitzgerald decides he's gotten all the information he is ever going to get. I agree that it probably will not be in the next few weeks since he is going to make Judith Miller sweat it out in jail to get her testimony. Once the GJ finishes its business she gets a Get Out of Jail Free Card, which I doubt he is going to hand to her anytime soon.

8. Miller might be given time to sweat it out and finally choose to testify
but afterwards, she could be facing indictment on criminal contempt and obstruction.

I wonder if her attorney has warned her on that one?

7. The later the better
We want this ship to come apart just as the Congressional Campaigns are getting underway.
Keep corruption fresh in the minds of the voter.

9. in the meantime, lots of political pressure can be applied
demands on Bush to fire Rove which Bush will be asked about, proposed legislation that republicans will have to vote on, demands on republicans not to appear with Rove at their campaign events, etc etc.

10. It's already started
Every Senate Republican will be on record as having voted in favor of Rove keeping his secuirty clearance.

Like an albatross around their necks...

11. I dunno
Fitzgerald was saying that he had to get tough on the reporters because of an unexpected turn in the investigation. That indicates that he found something really hot. Perhaps he has all he needs. I doubt it, but he will issue indictments pretty rapidly once he is sure he has his case wrapped up, I would guess.

12. He'll let Miller stew for a while
He'll give her every opportunity to cooperate before he seeks an indictment against her for criminal contempt and obstruction.

I don't think she realizes how serious this thing is and I also don't think she realizes letting her stew for a while is Fitzgerald's compassionate side coming through to allow her a chance to keep herself out of a long stint in prison.
