Breakdown of time given to Dem candidates...
Edited on Fri Sep-26-03 11:16 AM by Girlfriday
I timed each candidate during the debates, this is the breakdown:

Gephardt - 8 min. 25 sec.

Dean - 8 min. 16 sec.

Sharpton - 8 min. 16 sec.

Kerry - 8 min. 6 sec.

Kucinich - 7 min. 58 sec.

Graham - 7 min. 50 sec.

Clark - 7 min. 50 sec.

Leiberman- 7 min 30 sec.

Edwards - 7 min. 15 sec

Mosley-Braun - 7min even

Some of the disparity was rebuttal to an attack

1. How long were they given to answer questions? 30 seconds?
I want to know how many answers a 1 minute disparity constitutes.

7. Initial questions were one minute each,
rebuttals were given thirty seconds. I noticed that the first time I watched the debate, the mod said that candidates were rapidly becoming aware of who was taking more time to answer. I noticed some of the candidates did take 65 sec, but also some of the candidates took less time than allotted; Edwards in particular never got the bell.

2. Thx for mentioning that
Carol even commented that she got left out...like always... and they kept mentioning they had a timekeeper.

9. Dean got at least two chances to rebut questions.
The first time it was out of the blue. Why was Dean entitled to rebut Clark on being a Democrat? The second time was because Kerry directly referred to him.

I remember one other candidate be asked for a rebuttal, but it can't remember the circumstances. One time Edwards took up his own time to rebut someone else.

If they really were keeping track of time, they should have asked Edwards and CMB one more question, or should have given them a rubuttal or two at the end.

13. Well, Williams did say that if candidates went over, they'd have less time
at the end

It's not incumbent on CNBC to give fair balance among Dems if they themselves cant respect the time boundaries.

Talk to Kerry and Gephardt, who went over almost every time.

15. But, they were doing that knowing they'd lose time at the end...
...and they didn't.

Perhaps if Edwards had gone over, they would have taken his time away.

See how that works.

5. The whole format sucks though
I would have rather had a format that gave each candidate 9 minutes each ...uninterrupted..

They would have had to address each of the following:

Iraq
"war" on terror
Korea
domestic economy
health care
education
energy
voting disparity
Jobs

We would have learned a lot more about them, and their ideas, and they could have actually said positive things without wasting their time "attacking" each other :)

6. Wow, they shortened him so much, they even dropped the "s" on Edwards

Those fiends!

(Sorry for busting your chops on a little-bitty typo; you've provided a fabulous service by doing this.)

That's actually not so horribly unequal, though, but it is a bit of a drop-off near the bottom...

8. Good Job. This is what I
love about DUers, sticklers for the facts. What do you bet there will still be some that will say, your candidate got 6 more seconds than mine. lol

10. always thought rebuttal was the thing
i thought from the start that the rebuttals were the thing that made most difference and i noticed it also. especially with the dean ,gephardt, and kerry exchanges. many of these are voluntary also i assume. they ask to respond or asked to respond if someone makes a point about their position. clark might have got more time if he had asked to respond to dennis' comments on that iraq war planning thing. but it was his first debate so he is just getting use to it. but overall there was no great difference in amount of time.

12. No great difference? The difference between CMB and Gep is three rebuttals
or a rebuttal and a full question.

That's a lot of time, a lot of message, a lot of information, and lot of candidate positioning.

14. Thanks for this service, Girlfriday.
Facts are helpful antidotes to impressions, and at least a couple of mine are now corrected.
