7. A new form of PTSD
From the Quaker House Newsletter
COPING WITH THE PERSONAL & FAMILY COSTS OF WAR

One result that all therapists expected was PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder. Symptoms may include nightmares, flashbacks (even reenactment), disturbed sleep and hyper vigilance. This can be caused by a variety of incidents, from life threatening experience for the soldiers themselves to the experience of a good friend or buddy being injured or killed.

But many soldiers I’ve seen have PTSD symptoms due to the inhuman things that they had to do in this war…
<snip>
The violence of war creates violence at home when soldiers return. They most noticeable evidence of this is the dramatic increase in domestic violence, even the killings of spouses, since
the soldiers started returning. The soldiers tell me that the killing of spouses at military bases is at an all time high, but I have no concrete evidence to this effect, and the Army is pretty quiet about it. But I am sure seeing a lot of domestic violence in the couples here.

8. Most Soldiers are Non-Killers in Battle:
The Aftermath of State Sanctioned Violence and Who It Targets

On Killing, psychologist Lt. Colonel Dave Grossman devotes a whole chapter to the "Nonfirers Throughout History." Research has found that throughout history, in any war, only 15% to 20% of the soldiers are willing to kill. This low percentage is universal and applies to soldiers from every country throughout recorded history. Interestingly, even distance from the enemy does not necessarily encourage killing. Grossman offers the fascinating finding that "Even with this advantage, only 1 percent of the U.S. fighter pilots accounted for 40% of all enemy pilots shot down during WWII; the majority didn't shoot anyone down or even try to."

The U.S. obviously didn't appreciate this low percentage of killers, so it began changing the way it trained its military. Americans began using a combination of the "operant conditioning" of I.P. Pavlov and B.F. Skinner in their training, which desensitized our soldiers through repetition. One marine told me that in basic training not only do you "practice" killing incessantly but you are required to say the word "kill" in response to virtually every order. "Basically the soldier has rehearsed the process so many times," said Grossman, "that when he does kill in combat he is able to, at one level, deny to himself that he is actually killing another human being." By the Korean War 55% of U.S. soldiers were able to kill and by Vietnam an astounding 95% were able to do so. Grossman also states that Vietnam is now known as being the first pharmaceutical war in which the U.S. military fed our soldiers enormous amounts of drugs to dull their senses while they engaged in violent behavior and they are likely doing the same in Iraq.

Fort Lewis soldier turns himself in; wife's body found
Suspect had returned to Fort Lewis after serving a year in Iraq

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER
LAKEWOOD -- A Fort Lewis soldier and veteran of the war in Iraq turned himself in yesterday, saying he had committed a homicide, a Pierce County sheriff's spokesman said.
The soldier's 28-year-old wife subsequently was found dead, apparently from homicidal violence, in an apartment here, sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.
The soldier, who late yesterday had not been publicly identified, returned to Fort Lewis last month after serving for a year in Iraq with the 555th Combat Engineer Group, or "Triple Nickel," Troyer said.

Suicide In Fort Bragg Jail

An Army Special Forces soldier charged with killing his wife after returning from Afghanistan nine months ago hanged himself in a jail cell Sunday, officials said.

Master Sgt. William Wright was one of four soldiers at Fort Bragg suspected of killing their spouses in a six-week stretch last summer. The deadly spree forced the Army to re-evaluate how it provided support for soldiers with strained marriages and those readjusting after combat service.

Three of the four soldiers suspected of killing their wives were in Special Forces units. Each of those three have now committed suicide.

The rash of domestic killings led the Army to send a team of medical experts to Fort Bragg to study a wide range of health-related issues that might explain the killings.

Seventh Iraq war veteran kills himself
WASHINGTON, March 16 (UPI) -- A Colorado-based Army Special Forces soldier back from Iraq shot himself in the head in his front yard Sunday night, according to police -- at least the seventh soldier who has committed suicide after serving there.
William Howell, 36, shot himself after following his wife around the yard with a handgun, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. Howell served with the 10th Special Forces group in Iraq and returned to Fort Carson last month, according to the Army.

Soldier Kills Himself after Shooting Wife
Monday 07 February 2005
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- A Fort Bragg soldier charged as a teenager in a notorious New Jersey rape case shot and wounded his estranged wife and her boyfriend, then killed himself, authorities said.
Spc. Richard Timothy Corcoran, 34, entered wife Michele A. Corcoran's house Thursday night and shot William Paul Seifert several times. Michele Corcoran ran outside, where she was shot in the arm, said Cumberland County sheriff's Maj. Sam Pennica.
Corcoran then went back inside the house and shot himself, Pennica said.

5. They send these guys out into
hell. Then they expect them to just come home like nothing has happened. Oh yeah, and they're cutting the benefits and money so these guys can't get the psychological help they need, all so they can line the pockets of the already rich. Makes me wish I there was a hell, just so I could see these bastards go there.
