Comment: How can you sanction the use of voting equipment which has been proven problematic in more than 100 elections across the nation?
Are those who "certified" these machines aware of the independent studies by extremely knowledgeable academicians at Rice and Stanford Universities?
These universities found that e-voting systems are easily tampered with remotely or directly by election officials. Not only that, there is no way of auditing and verifying that a vote punched into a e-system actually registers to the system and cannot be changed once it enters the system.
As it stands, elections using the equipment you are getting will essentially and ultimately be decided by those with access to the computers used to collect public votes. The only question is: will the people who can tamper with votes already cast exercise their ability to do so?
That is no way to run a democracy.

Comment: This article is filled with blatant lies. The SAIC report ACTUALLY says the following....
"This Risk Assessment has identified several high-risk vulnerabilities in the implementation of the managerial, operational, and technical controls for AccuVote-TS voting system. If these vulnerabilities are exploited, significant impact could occur on the accuracy, integrity, and availability of election results."
Perhaps if the Repository was less concerned with lying to prop up the hometown company and more interested in the truth, the story would have sounded less like a puff piece.
Nowhere does this article mention that the report says "The system, as implemented in policy, procedure, and technology, is at high risk of compromise.
Nowhere does it mention that Diebold REFUSES to allow a paper trail for checking results. Diebold ATMs give a paper receipt with EVERY transaction. WHY would they refuse to allow the opportunity to check for flawed results.
I'll tell you why...in the words of Wally O'Dell, CEO of Diebold - "I am committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the President next year."
Think about that....the CEO of a company that makes voting machines promises to "deliver Ohio's electoral votes" to Bush.
Wake up. Your vote may not count, becuase Diebold doesn't want it to.

Comment: IF Wally O'Dell had not promised the state of Ohio to Bush in the next election, perhaps I would not be so concerned about the use of the word IF in the following paragraph.
'Ehrlich said the independent review indicates "the Diebold machine and source code, if operated properly, can contribute to one the safest, most secure election systems available. Because of this report, Maryland voters will have one of the safest election environments in the nation." '
What IF it is not properly operated? Then, I must conclude, the election would not be valid. There are too many questions being raised about the Diebold machines for me to feel assured that they are secure.

Comment: "The head of a company, Walden O'Del, executive of Diebolds, who is trying to sell voting machines in Ohio, told Republicans in a recent fund-raising letter that he is 'committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the resident Bush next year.' The Aug. 14 letter from Walden O'Dell, chief executive of Diebold Inc.
- who has become active in the re-election effort of Resident Bush - prompted Democrats this week to question the propriety of allowing O'Dell's company to calculate votes in the 2004 presidential election. O'Dell attended a strategy pow-wow with wealthy Bush benefactors - known as Rangers and Pioneers - at the resident's Crawford, Texas, ranch earlier this month. The next week, he penned invitations to a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser to benefit the Ohio Republican Party's federal campaign fund - partially benefiting Bush - at his mansion... The letter went out the day before Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, also a Republican, was set to qualify Diebold as one of three firms eligible."
So now, Walden O'Del, chief of eecutive of Diebold Inc, will indeed, deliver up the 2004 election to Bush, as he promised! Bush will once again steal an election by help from his corrupt republican supporters!

Comment: Maryland did the right thing and had the voting system investigated. But Diebold failed! The independent review found 328 security weaknesses, 26 of them critical. As usual Diebold is again trying to pull the wool over our eyes saying that they passed. They believe noone will review the SAIC report at
http://www.dbm.maryland.gov/dbm_search/technology/toc_voting_system_report/votingsystemreportfinal.pdfand see how flawed their system is. The Washington Post wrote a detailed story about this and about how bad Diebold is for voting security.
Wonder why this story is wrongly reporting Diebold passed?
