Lost a job over a DU post.. We are being watched friends....
Where to begin? I wanted to post this yesterday but I was told to keep my mouth shut until the show was over(read the post, you'll understand) if I wanted to get paid for the work I had already done. The night before last I made this post:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=4087162

As you can see I had some great suggestions and was prepared to combine some of them into the flier yesterday to spread around today. I never got the chance. At 12:30 in the afternoon yesterday the head of the company I was working for came to the booth and told me the client hadn't paid the bill and I had to leave, they were shutting the booth down. This has happened before on rare occasions so I didn't think it was too strange. About 4:00 that afternoon I get a phone call. They called to ask me how to run the videowall. Well, at that point the guy just starts rambling about how they had to send someone else in, because "security" had called saying a guy working at the show posted a message on an Internet board under the name of Walldude and was "threatening to blow the place up". (I obviously let a little too much information out in the original post, they had no trouble figuring out who I was. I had actually tried to edit the post later to remove the city and booth info but the edit time had expired) Now, he's telling me this as he has a copy of the post right in front of him. I was so shocked all I could do was argue semantics with him for a few minutes. Then I told him what to do to run the wall so the show could continue and hung up. I was stunned. They had turned what I wrote into a "security risk" and had me removed from the show.
Now I only lost a day and a half's work over this, but I doubt the company will ever use me again. I have alot of friends working there and work is pretty thin in the summer, so that kinda sucks. But what's really bothering me, is the fact that someone actually saw the post and alerted someone about it. All anyone will tell me is "security called" and they have no idea how security found out. As more and more of the shock wore off, and my brain started functioning again, I started to get so pissed off that I couldn't see straight. I tried Googling different keywords and combinations of words from the post to see if it showed up but it didn't. I tried other search engines to make sure, but it looks like they weren't specifically hunting for posts related to the trade show. That means someone was here, saw the post, put the old GOP spin on it and got me fired from the gig.
Now the really fucked up part of this if you think about it is, they all had copies of the post. Security, the decorating company, the company that hired me. It was obvious I didn't threaten to blow the place up, I even talked about how nice alot of the people were. Yet, even with the facts right in front of their faces, they still insisted on repeating the mantra. How easily the weak minded are swayed. I started thinking that if people are this easily manipulated I really should of bought one of those Rapture Kits while I had the chance.
I hope the story doesn't get passed around to other companies I work for, the spin has already got me making bomb threats, next they'll have me on the show floor with bombs strapped to my chest screaming Allah! Allah! That would probably end my career real quick.
Other than that I am unscathed. All this, plus a death in the family this week, coupled with the attempts to spin Rove into a hero has only steeled my resolve against the growing fascism in this country. I realized that most of the people are sheep, happy to go about their lives believing everything the government tells them. Like the Germans in WWII, they won't bother to see the truth until it's too late. The least I can attempt to do is make sure they can't claim ignorance....

Use PMs. Post preferentially from home. Use encrypted e-mail if you can get someone to set it up for you of have the skill yourself (i.e. http://enigmail.mozdev.org)

I hope you get another job. When you do it, DON'T SAY IN A PUBLIC FORUM WHAT IT OR THEY'LL KEEP HARASSING YOU.

Just say "I got a new job. Fuck you freepers and sphincterers." They'll get the message.

attorney just itching for something like this.

If the job wasn't all that important, that's cool, but if it leads to more problems., look into some low or no cost legal help.

The thing about blowing stuff up would make me want to know the source of that tidbit. If the suits don't come knocking anytime soon, the guy was maybe just talking out his ass.

They have a right to fire you if you were putting subliminal stuff in a company product, and to be honest, if we'd read a freeper posting a similar thing, we'd go after him as well.

It's too late to help with this, but if you pass the edit time and you have a serious concern about something you've posted, you can alert on your own post and ask a mod to just delete the whole thing. Not that I've ever done that. ;-)

If I worked somewhere and saw a freepers post claiming to have done what you did with the subliminal message and the plans you were making, i would have alerted security to have you removed as well.

I support you and your cause, but i think more preparation and consideration of the method is necessary.

I read the other thread. You couldn't have done a better job of outing yourself if you had posted that post under the name your mom gave you along with your picture on FR.

somebody read the post, copied it, found out how to get ahold of security at the venue your show was at, then told them "there's some guy who built the videowall at the booth selling the old BBC tapes of the "Narnia" trilogy and he's an Al-Ka-Seltzah operative..."

There are sad and lonely people who spend their days analyzing DU and figuring out ways to fuck with us. If you give them any personal ID they will fuck you up. They are the new brownshirts. Go over to www.freerepublic.com and search to see if you find any info on yourself. I would not be surprised if it came from there.

Maybe you missed this post - terminal cancer patients are not exempt from GOP hate tactics:

187. Read this thread...read the original..an attorneys take
Now leaving aside the bomb threat stuff for a second I scanned your original post in the other thread a few times. Your problem is that you were paid to do a job and by admitting that you altered the work product for even 1/30th of a second you left yourself open to being fired. Your mistake was not in altering the stuff (at 1/30th of a second we all know nobody could catch you using the naked eye) but in posting about it here. Some repuke read the info and then called to report on you. Its ok to even post about it here but not with locations and info that makes it easy to track you down.

As to the security dude...well who knows how rumors get started but its obvious that any simple reading of that post could never make anybody think that there was anything security related about it. It was probably people talking shit for the sake of it. We all know how its done-but just in case keep a copy of your original post and this one here and write down in detail everything that happened that day before the details go dim in your memory. This way if it comes up in months from now you will be able to totally refresh your memory.

Overall though my advice is to not advertise any editing of your work product that the client did not want or pay for. Or at least anything that can identify you personally. You would be shocked how easy it is these days as you now know

regards

20. Beware of Websense
I worked for 4 different bosses under 2 years at this one company and the last one turned out to be a majorly neanderthal freeper. Suddenly he calls me into his office to terminate me for "internet use" with no warning. It turns out they use a program called Websense that tracks what sites you visit. None of my other bosses cared, but this one did - he mentioned DU. If you log on from a corporate computer, their WWW server most likely has Websense installed. I think the only way around it is to set up a remote connection to your home PC and surf from there. Or a proxy server of some sort, I'm not too sure. Websense is diabolical.

Sorry you got fired though. That sucks.

21. That's really too bad.....but....
...honestly, if someone you don't know and have never met may ask, "What were you thinking?" Although I agree wholeheartedly with your political views as relate to your predicament selling those wingnutty books, you kind of asked for what you got. Sounds like you let your guard down, again, if I may be so bold. You gave these people ammunition to give you the gas...and if they feel like embellishing it to make it a cleaner cut for them, what can you possibly say in your defense..."well I didn't say I'd blow the place up....I only said everybody here was nuts!!" I feel bad for you, and you seem like an intelligent enough person to learn from this mistake.
This too shall pass.

Peace.

"...you kind of asked for what you got"

Same thing some people say when a woman dressed in a miniskirt gets raped.

58. Look...I'm not here to get into a chatroom argument....
...I think I made the point I wanted to make, and I can see a number of other people have taken similar positions....

I'll just say this...he posted enough damning info on an internet chatroom to identify himself...and then he got identified, and then he got fired. Doesn't really have much to do with raping women in miniskirts, it has more to do with not posting internet messages which can get you fired.

And yes, I take offence at your analogy.

Goodnight.

65. Take offense at it all you want.
And this isn't a chatroom.

But saying he was "asking for it" is the same exact thing people say in the analogy I used. Same reasoning, everything.

I even SAID his listing the information was stupid, but what I take umbrage at in your post was justifying what the reich wingers did.

So if a woman leaves her purse next to me, forgets it and walks away, that was pretty stupid of her and well, she was pretty much asking for it if I take it, right? Doesn't make it right for me to do that, does it?

89. Last word from me and then I'm out....
....looks like this could go on all night....so I'll sum up, and then be gone....

...I can see you're fond of analogies about rape and stealing purses...but let me chime in with one of my own....

...I say he "kind of asked for it", yes indeed a choice of words which has obviously touched a nerve with you, and I'm sorry for that.
Would you not agree, being a progressive thinker yourself, that Karl Rove "kind of asked for it" ('it' here being the shit hitting the fan)when he confirmed/leaked the identity of a CIA agent to the press?? Or, is the term "kind of asked for it" strictly reserved for situations involving short-skirted women 'deserving' rape or forgetful women who leave their purses behind 'deserving' to get their purse stolen??

Give me a fucking break. And honestly, as I write this I'm pissed off at myself for even getting sucked into such a stupid, tangential argument having virtually nothing to do with walldude's original post.
I feel bad for the guy, for what happened to him. Just like I have felt bad for myself in the past, when I goofed off at work once (playing cards instead of doing my job), knowing that my boss could return at any moment. Guess what? He did, and he told me and my other goofing-off coworkers to "get back to work, or expect to be fired within the hour!!"

And yes....I "kind of asked for it"....ya gotta problem with that??

100. I don't see how the Rove case is even slightly related to this, but
whatever.

Obviously you can't address the fact that you justified what reich wingers have done.

Your boss asking you to get back to work is a PERFECTLY legit request, seeing as, uh, he's YOUR BOSS.

What the reich-wingers did, though, was wrong. Walldude never threatened to bomb anything AND because of DUers response, he even took the frame out of his video! So how did he even REMOTELY deserve to lose his job????

He didn't. What they did was wrong. It was stupid of him to post the information and it was WRONG of whatever freeper fucktard called up and LIED about him saying he was going to bomb the place.

He didn't ASK to be lied about, now did he?

Freeper wife (or friend, or cousin, etc.) is on DU trolling around. They see freeper in your posting subject, read it, and know a person at the show. Call him up and relate your post. The person prints it out, it gets related to an official and bingo, your trouble start.

Similar scenario freeper sees the post, gets pissed and contacts The Christian Retailers Association relating what you said.

Good luck and be very vague in your details with future posts of this nature.

79. If it is a right to work state, then yes. You can be fire for any reason
or no reason at all and you have no recourse.

However, if they pass on information as to why they fired you and it is not true, there are grounds for a lawsuit.

Problem there is it is hard to prove unless they commit it to paper or someone is willing to testify. And even if you win/settle your case, your lawyer is gonna get at least 40% of your winnings/settlement.

We can all be held responsible for the manner in which we represent our companies in the media and YES this is the media.

Certain acts such as whistle blowing may be protected, but he gave enough information to be identified and his company may even have an employee manual that specifically precludes what he did.

As SoCalDem stated above, we need to take caution with what we post.

My favorite booth was selling BibleMan The Video! Willy Ames fighting against secularism, evolution and impure thoughts. I hear it's a best seller in the religious crowd.

73. As an ex-fundy, I couldn't have handled the environment you were
working in, so I understand your frustration. Still, it was a bad idea to include the subliminal "Impeach Bush" frame in the video. I don't believe subliminal messages like that work, but it was still not a good idea--definitely not in line with your job description, I'm guessing? I'm not sure about your "fliers." That might have been okay, depending upon the rules of the event concerning solicitation.

But because I absolutely can't stand fundamentalism, I might have been tempted to do something, too. Anything that can be considered destructive is wrong, but believe me, I've felt frustration that deeply and nearly succumbed, myself.

Now for the freeper: it was doubly wrong for someone to sniff you out based on a DU post. That was a low thing to do, but then again, after what happened to Andy, I'm not shocked by anything the extreme right wing does.

76. Sorry you got canned
You had my 100% sympathy until you said you added a frame to the video. Then you only had 90% sympathy. Despite your feelings, you did break the contract with what some would deem inflammatory behavior. If I did it in my job (and I can do it), I would be kicked to the curb so fast the skin on my ass would be sheared off. Not because of my political beliefs, but because I broke the trust of my employer. My boss did something similar once...added the phrase "Love your mother" to a promotional spot for one frame, and he got suspended a week without pay. The only reason he got caught was that HIS boss happened to hit pause at the EXACT right moment.

That said, the fact that some dipshit turned you in like that sucks. But if you post THAT specific of info, you're almost waving a red flag in front of a freeper. I agree that things get way too Orwellian. But you set yourself up for it.

98. I agree, hit a man when he is already down, nice, it's obvious
he knew early on what was up but wasn't quick enough to stop the landslide...

You know, I've been on many sites, one of the reason I found this one to be a base so to speak was because of the comradship I first saw, well, after reading other sites and hearing the joy and hoops and hollars how many have trolls on this board to disrupt, I am not only sickened by such behaviour from adults, I am sick to death of this inner war that this new adminstration has heaped on us unsuspecting Americans...

The hate I witnessed on other boards was downright chilling, I always hoped it would not happen on this site...

Sure I made fun earlier of the silly attempt at humor from another site that trolled here, but it wasn't meant to be harsh and cold, it was only meant to make people see how childish they are attacking, but only because I was directed to that site from someone on this one did I even happen upon it, perhaps it is a good rule that one cannot name sites that hate people they don't even know,,

This behavior does not make me feel better about our future in this country at all, hurting someone like what was done now to WB by getting him to lose his job because of his politics is simply the most pathetic form of school yard bullying and yes, nazi style tactics that tell big brother what thy neighbor is up to..

He doesn't need to be scolded like a child over and over again, this is supposed to be a community for support, and even freepers or the equivilent, how can you honestly say you hate people simply because their politics differ from yours, its surreal...

right now myself, the first place I came to was DU, but I would never have posted in GD because I know this is what happens.
I posted in a couple of groups with the people who know me and the support was overwhelming, it totally blew me away.

There are some wonderful people here, but you'll find plenty of the other kind as well.

And, unfortunately, when someone is down, that's where you'll find them.

106. Im sorry to hear that, there's good days and bad days, its life,
we deal with it, but one of the good things in life has got to be the fact that one is not alone. Obviously you have found some connection on this board, I am not really letting it happen like that, I guess I knew this would eventually take place just like you did, and all in all, Im not exactly a trusting person these days...

Your right, there really is some wonderful people here, if I am to be honest, there is on other sites as well, the trouble is, I have seen them get caught up in a frenzy typical of a group of sharks attacking when one smells blood, they all gang up..

I have tried not to join such packs, I think I have fairly succeeded, but by and by, I still cannot in all honesty understand the mindset of those that demand that all people become clone like in this country, it's disheartening and not at all healthy for true growth...

We don't have much time on this earth when you think about it, surely our time could be better spent attempting to find some form of middle ground that can at least find us all at least being able to be civil to each other regardless of political and personal viewpoints and or lifesytles...

I guess thats asking too much ;-) Oh well. I hope things get better for you, time to hit the sack..way past my bedtime..

Check out the non political forums and groups.
It's a much slower pace and there's not much need to be defensive.
Really.
There are so many of them, I'm sure you'll find something that interests you.

If you like animals, try the Pets Group, everybody there is wonderful.
Lots of positive information and stories, but some sad.

I donated $5 when I first joined DU so that I could post in the groups. I was unemployed and it was all I could afford.
I've donated twice since then and it's been worth the price a thousand times over.

It's good to take a break from the madness, it helps me to remember that we're all here for a reason, community.

170. Your response is ridiculous
he posted hit on a web board, that's not asking for a critique?

The premise of the poster is pathetic. He sabotaged his work and he blames his termination on freepers?

That's like the criminal at the end of scooby doo "I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for you darn freepers".

He didn't get fired because of freepers, he got fired because he sabotaged his work and was a clear threat to his employer. And as a clear saboteur, it was smart for the employer to get him out without incident.

If it had proceeded and someone had noticed and complained to his employer, who would he be crying about then?

Hopefully you'll learn an important lesson from this. You actions reporesented our cause poorly also. Do you think I want my position associated with someone who treats people like that? It's just not cool.

Agent Smith:
" It seems that you've been living two lives. One life, you're Thomas A. Anderson, program writer for a respectable software company. You have a social security number, pay your taxes, and you... help your landlady carry out her garbage.

The other life is lived in computers, where you go by the hacker alias "Neo" and are guilty of virtually every computer crime we have a law for. One of these lives has a future, and one of them does not. "

Neo:
"I know you're out there. I can feel you now.
I know that you're afraid... afraid of us. You're afraid of change.
I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end.
I came here to tell how it's going to begin.
I'm going to hang up this phone, and then show these people what you don't want them to see.
I'm going to show them a world without you."

Mouse: "To deny our own impulses is to deny the very thing that makes us human.

Morpheus: The Matrix is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

I use this movie as a metaphor to describe what others I know, and myself ,have been subjected to,

126. Making Subliminal Messages Itself is Wrong.
It’s one thing to do it like the Mister Subliminal jokes from Saturday Night Live several years ago. But what he did is still wrong. Imagine us a making a Pro Kerry campaign commercial two years ago and finding out later that there was a pro Repub frame or two in it. Everybody here would be frothing at the mouth over it.

That they don’t work is one thing. But because there easily fooled people in everywhere (including here, including freepers) somebody will believe he’ was trying mind control.

If a story comes out that we want subliminal messages sent everywhere in order to win the next election, there will be massive backlash. That most people will more or less scoff and use that famous scene in Star Wars to mock it (“These are not the Droids you are looking for.”), enough people would become enraged at us. The Rove scandal would be over shadowed very easily.

That it won’t really work isn’t the point. Too many people believe it does.

If it doesn't work, WHY would people get into a lather about it.

Your assertion, quite frankly, is ridiculous. If someone put one pro-bush frame in a pro-Kerry commercial and we all found out later, you know what I would do?

LAUGH MY ASS OFF.

Why? Because that poor deluded soul actually went to all the trouble of splicing in a single frame that NO ONE NOTICED!!!

Seriously, that's a hoot.

Massive backlash? LOL, dude, you give subliminal messages, something even YOU admit doesn't work WAY too much credit.

And where's that proof he'd be sent to federal prison, huh? Still waiting on that....

You revealed too much information about yourself, and someone with an ideological axe to grind found you out. You basically revealed your position, and somebody picked you off. You made it that much easier by mentioning what exactly you were doing (a tradeshow, the Christian Retailers Association tradeshow of all shows!) as well as the exact city you were in.

I would suggest that when you post here from now on, you post in a manner that does not reveal anything too personal about yourself. Please, you must tread lightly. I hope you stay safe. This is not child's play, as you are now painfully aware. Now, in this case it was your job, but it could have easily been your PHYSICAL SAFETY.

Remember they hounded Andy and deliberately interfered with his treatment. They love nothing better than to do harm to others...so everyone, wake up to this "new" threat. Be circumspect in how/what you post here. There is NO privacy in America...least of all on the Internets.

Besides, do a google search for "DUmmy FUnnies", and you'll see how many idiots moniter these pages. Also, Rush mentioned this site recedntly, which has to cause a spike in the traffic.

What the hell where you thinking?

Now here is what is sad. I could have a professional interest in what you are doing because I am involved in a couple of trade shows (attend two, organize one) and could possibly have a need for your services, or could refer others to you. And if I had just known you as a DUer I would have been inclined to toss you any business I could.

But now, I would worry. What if you have some political issues with the industry I am involved with, would you put subliminal messages in a display I hired you to design?

This advice to hire a lawyer is absolute horsecrap, by the way, I am an attorney, one of the conferences I am involved with is a law-related, I specialize in regulatory compliance, including employment law. You have no case whatsoever. In fact, as a contractor, rather than an employee, you have less than no case.

138. I would have fired you, too.
If you don't like the job, quit. If you plan on doing "subliminal messages" then you deserve to be fired. If you were just blowing off steam, then I'm sorry for your dilemma, and obviously, you don't deserve to be accused of planting bombs or anything, but seriously -- what were you thinking posting that stuff on a public message board???? Sigh. Stupidity should be painful, and it sounds like you are having a moment or two of pain....:(

139. Exposing Political beliefs at work can be troublesome
Everyone should be free to believe as they choose, but that is clearly not the case.

There was a post on DU in the last week where a bank teller had discussed her love for Bush. (paraphrasing heavily).

A DU customer took heavy offense to this and in my estimation (and others in the thread), got the teller fired.

In this particular case, you went beyond just discussion, and into sabotage of the videos etc. You were moraly right, but legally and ethically wrong.

Live and learn. We all make mistakes. The wisest of us learn from them.

The OP said he didn't want her fired but just told to keep her politics to herself.

but clearly the OP wanted action taken against the employee. The OP has no control of what action the bank did or did not take.

In the same vein, whoever reported this guy did not know what action the employer would take.

No different than this case, other than the possible severity of the discipline.

He said something about blowing the place up which the poster did not say. This is different than the other case.

147. Likely, but we don't know that much
We just know that the employer found out.

We have no information on the initial report. Common sense tells us it was a lurking freeper but there's many other possible explanations.

Since the employer has access to the actual thread, they can see that it was not the op that talked about blowing up the place, but a responder.

In the end, its clear to all (including the employer) that this was no threat, but a simpler case of vandalism and political disagreement.

They had every right to fire you. Accept your mistake and move on, and next time, use your head. It is illegal to use subliminal messages like that. At least it should be. How would you feel if someone you hired did that to you?

144. I would have fired you too
You have no case for suing the employer, and I don't know what the people here advising you that you do are thinking. The ACLU? Please!

If you can't separate your professional duty from your personal beliefs you should say so - up front - to your employer. When you found out what the gig was you should have told your employer that you weren't comfortable with it and would like to take a pass on this job.

It would be one thing if you were some kind of undercover activist with the full expectation of getting kicked out if you were discovered. But, you weren't. You were an "activist of opportunity", plotting to disrupt their event while accepting their money.

As much as you (or I) might find the material offensive - it was theirs. It was their right to preach to their own choir without having someone on their own payroll disrupt it. You weren't doing what you were paid to do.

And another thing - I find all of the cheerleaders in the original thread who encouraged you and offered suggestions to be very immature, and not at all helpful. Any thinking person who cared on wit about your job or your well-being would have pointed out to you that you were wrong instead of encouraging this "workplace fantasy".

148. You just became wiser.
You are now wiser about issues of separating activism from your professional responsibilities. And you are more savvy about how much and what to divulge on the Internet. AND you learned that humor can be turned against you in written form.

Thanks for posting this -- it's a valuable reminder to activists about keeping themselves in check while on the clock.

151. Here's why it's ridiculous to fire people over anonymoust internet posts.
This is what could have happened:

Say you're a freeper.

Step 1: Someone at DU could post with enough information to make it sound like you're that person, but make it sound like you're the most liberal person ever.

Step 2: Other freepers could read that post and try to get you fired for expressing liberal opinions.

{Now if that happened, freepers spread the word that apparently some asshole is trying to get them fired by spreading lies that they're liberal and maybe the witch hunters would have second thoughts about hunting witches.)

By the way, Wall guy, imagine you had covered your tracks by posting everything you did, but you indentified the product you were selling as the product sold by the biggest freeper at the show. They would have fired their own. What would people here think about that?

154. Well, isn't that a fine kettle of fish
What an unhappy situation.

I remember your original post, and the only thing I recall that might have been iffy is your reference to subliminal but certainly non-violent images inserted into the board.

What can I say except that I'm so sorry you lost the work, and that must have been so unpleasant to deal with - and embarrassing as well.
Maybe that's what they wanted to do - was make you miserable. I hope that you don't lose other work over it.

As for the religious and civil liberty issues, I agree with others who've advised you to contact the ACLU.

"Evil flourishes when good men do nothing."

I used to feel embarrassed, like I needed to apologize for those who use the name Christian as a weapon of mass destruction. Much prayer and meditation later, I realize that they just don't get it. Jesus was a powerful man because he was a non-violent, non-judgemental man - divinity is not the point. The message was the most powerful ever to hit the planet - then and now. U2 calls grace a force that changed the world.

That's what I wish you now - grace to get through this current unpleasantness. This, too, shall pass.

161. I have often thought that they (freepers) rely far too much
on the information posted here and I have wondered what would happen if someone posted a purely fictional thread, but used the real name of say, a trade show or something and caused freepers to put out a hell of a lot of energy trying to get a non-existent person fired.

There are plenty of ways to do that. They just assume information posted here is correct, and in walldude's case, it was, but it is not always.

Look. I don't want to sound unsympathetic, but you were VERY foolish to put as much identifying info about yourself in that other thread as you did. Very. People who wish you harm -- and there are thousands of them, probably (called "freepers" or "fascists," whichever you prefer) now know exactly who you are, or can find out.

Were you not aware of what happened to Andy Stephenson (now DEAD)? Some of these pigs are DANGEROUS and most of them are fucking CRAZY.
