Daschle sold out on gun legislation - coward

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030925/ap_on_go_co/gun_lawsuits

Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle says he will back legislation to protect gun makers from lawsuits arising from criminal use of the weapons, as long as it is changed to ensure legitimate claims can go forward.

-snip-

National Rifle Association spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said the group welcomed Daschle's support, noting other Senate leaders of both parties already had backed it.

Arulanandam said the bill would protect the industry and retailers from "malicious lawsuits aimed at bankrupting law abiding retailers and manufacturers."

President Bush (news - web sites) supports the legislation, a version of which passed the House this spring on a 285-140 vote.

1. There are several politicians who I disagree with on the gun issue..
...I'll add Daschle to my list.

2. I'm sorry to say this, but IMO, Daschle has shown terrible leadership
by towing the neocon line, rolling over on his belly for everything the neocons have put forth. I know he's a Dem, but at this point he's really just filling a seat, and providing zero opposition leadership, IMHO.

I don't think he can take the heat. :-(

3. Considering he's from SD
It makes sense, somewhat.

Again, I believe gun control should be a state issue, not a federal issue.

4. I agree with Daschle on this one.
I support reasonable gun control proposals like background checks, closing the gun show loophole, waiting periods, only being able to buy one gun a month (should be a year), and so on. But the attempt to bankrupt gun manufacturers by suing them for the criminal use of their products is not right. If the American people want to shut down the gun companies, they should do it through the legislative process. This effort is simply an attempt to do through the courts what cannot be done in Congress, and that's no way to govern.
