not only does he not read the news...the people who brief him don't read it themselves either but rather have someone else read it to them too. And he thinks it's perfectly acceptable to find out 3rd hand what's going on in the world.

I seem to remember reading that most presidents get a morning "cheat sheet" of major news stories, collated by White House staff. He's probably talking about that.

He's worked with past presidents, and he said he found Bush's comments extremely unusual and troubling.

He said that the other presidents he'd observed devoured newspapers, and he said that it's necessary for presidents to get an idea what people are saying, people other than his advisors, no matter how competent they are.
