Adoption Agency Rejects Catholic Parents

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Christian adoption agency that receives money from Choose Life license plate fees said it does not place children with Roman Catholic couples because their religion conflicts with the agency's ``Statement of Faith.''

Bethany Christian Services stated the policy in a letter to a Jackson couple this month, and another Mississippi couple said they were rejected for the same reason last year.

``It has been our understanding that Catholicism does not agree with our Statement of Faith,'' Bethany's state director Karen Stewart wrote. ``Our practice to not accept applications from Catholics was an effort to be good stewards of an adoptive applicant's time, money and emotional energy.''

Sandy and Robert Steadman, who learned of Bethany's decision in a July 8 letter, said their priest told them the faith statement did not conflict with Catholic teaching.

11. Now I've read tons of Chick tracts for their humor/shock value...
but unbelievably, I've never come across that one. Really gets to the root of his Catholic hatred. Wow.

3. One thing caught my attention
and i am sure you al will correct me if i am wrong but...

"A Christian adoption agency that receives money from Choose Life license plate fees...."

Aren't these fees collected by the state? so isn't this agency using state funds to discriminate against those of another faith and advance a religious agenda?

Would be ironic if any of those Catholic parents had one of those "Choose Life" plates on their car.

8. So how can we get this info to all the Catholics?
I know, for years, The Catholics were opposed to most other Church teachings, and something seems to have brought them together with their support of Shrub.

This kind of info wiould sure separate that aliance, i would think.

I don't know if it would work, send this info to a lot of Churches linking to web site in the UK though.

12. Two wrongs dont make a right
The RC church wouldnt confirm me for not picketing a womens clinic. To this day that decision still hurts me however I take no joy in this story. Exclusion is a horrible thing. I just hope beyond hope that people would learn from this and stop descriminating against people because of orientation, party affiliation, and stance on reproductive issues. *sighs* Can't we all just get along ?

13. Christianity - "The religion of peace."
Still squabbling among themselves, I see. So, which side is going to launch the crusade?

"The bible is a book with some beautiful poetry, a blood stained history, a wealth of obscenity, and upwards of ten thousand lies." - Mark Twain

14. Howard Dean Should Take Note...
The next time the Religious Right goes on a tear about "un-Christian" Democrats, Howard Dean and others should point out such sectarian antics like the Bethany Christian Services' and others. For that matter, when they swing through the West, Democrats ought to remind folks like the LDS, the various Orthodox churches, Christian Scientists, Unitarians, and others that right-wing Protestant Evangelicals don't consider them Christian either.
