Christian Adoption Agency rejecting Catholic parents
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050715/ap_on_re_us/adoption_catholics

JACKSON, Miss. - A Christian adoption agency that receives money from Choose Life license plate fees said it does not place children with Roman Catholic couples because their religion conflicts with the agency's "Statement of Faith."

<snip>

This is what I never understood about the political "alliance" between Catholics and fundie Christians like Baptists, etc...the fundie Christians hate the Catholics as much as any atheist - they only join with them to push through politicians and legislation who they have common ground with.

I think it is awesome when Catholics adopt - so often you hear these holier-than-thou blowhards going on and on about "choosing life" but they surely aren't willing to open their home to homeless kids whose mothers "chose life"...which is why it is so confusing why a so-called Christian adoption agency would refuse any qualified parent (then again, why would they refuse gay couples who are qualified to be loving, stable parents for a child in need?)

A guy a dated a long time ago was over at my house when we got the latest edition of the "Christian Yellow Pages" (for those of you who don't know, it's full of *only* Christian businesses). When he scoffed at it, I questioned him because he was Catholic - he stated that "the fundamentalist Christians hate Catholics and see us as sinners too; they just align with us to push through their own agenda."

Hope some Catholics see this and realize they're only being used by the fundies.

1. Against the law!
Edited on Fri Jul-15-05 05:58 PM by longship
If they are on the public dole, they cannot discriminate. That's federal law!!! Now, I don't know what kind of arrangement the "Choose Life" license plate fee is, but if it is public funds, the rules are very, very clear--NO DISCRIMINATION!

13. Basically private funds funnelled through the Highway Department
Edited on Sat Jul-16-05 12:15 AM by undisclosedlocation
(DoT, whatever). You pay extra for your special tag (your college, say, or favorite dance or whatever crazy shit the highway dept. has agreed to. Here there's an In God We Trust one, which I for one am less than thrilled about). The money is passed on to the sponsoring (or maybe sponsored is more accurate) organization, college, whatever. So in the strictest sense it's a private contribution. On the other hand, presumably the department takes a cut or why would they bother? So to that extent, yeah, it's got to be illegal, or at least it should. Of course, it should be regardless of where the money comes from; equal protection under the law and all that.

2. There's a "Christian" adoption agency here that is the same
They say they want to help Christians adopt children, but only certain denominations of Christians. Nice.

11. I think their deal is they want children placed in "Christian" homes
What bothers me about this is that to me, the word Christian is a broad term, encompassing many denominations. It seems wrong to me to call it that and then NOT accept Catholics, Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, etc.

I actually don't have a problem with the idea of an agency calling themselves a Catholic/Mormon/SDA/Pagan/Muslim agency and then adopting out children only to families who belong to that group.

This group has the additional funding issue, though, and agree that if one accepts these kinds of funds and claims to be dedicated to finding families for these babies, any good home should be considered desirable.

14. True...
And by "any good qualified home" that should also include gay couples. I'm sure there's quite a few gay Christian couples out there who would be thrilled to adopt!

How much you wanna bet this agency would shit a brick if that adoption application ever came through lol? They wouldn't be able to find the "rejected" stamp fast enough.

3. You beat me to this one..
I am getting so sick and tired of these hypocritical religious right wackos. They truly are insane. Its very sad. Now children are being denied possibly good homes because the parents aren't the right 'flavor' of Christianity??

What's next?

5. Catholics could take the high ground on this one by being sure
that they adopt more unwanted babies than anyone else, and as far as competing with the Fundie/Evangel-Cartels, I think the Catholic Church could approach something like its penance by leading a movement toward "the Grassroots' Village", the kind of community, many of us need right now, or will as we get older.

This would be a very pro-life thing to do and very much in keeping with the Catholic Church's teachings on Social Justice and it's something Catholic Charities could administer, part of a faith-based initiative maybe, if there aren't too many political hoops for what is probably not very much Federal support.

6. Try being a Catholic in the south
Edited on Fri Jul-15-05 06:54 PM by fberknm
Many of us saw this early on. I have lived the life of a devout Catholic among southern Baptists in Texas while in high school and college. It is difficult, to say the least. They don't like us because we enjoy life, bend an elbow, dance. We also embrace minorities in our churches and support hospitals that serve the needs of the poor, often ethnic minorities. To a right wing wacko, this is just too much.

The right wing reactionaries have always been opposed to Catholics. When our numbers can help them, they are our best friends, but otherwise, they want nothing of us. Try going to school on Ash Wednesday with the ashes on your head, the reaction is pure vitriol.

Catholics are split politically, to be sure. We are opposed to abortion, but tend to support greater social equity.

I have stopped donating to the Catholic church. I do not want to support lawsuits when the church has so egregiously mismanaged this issue. They tried to ignore it and now they are paying.

Fortunately most Catholics understand the differences between the Catholic faith and the Catholic church.

BTW, the Anglican Catholic Church supports gay rights, female priests and married priests. I doubt the Roman Catholic Church is going that way, although it could. It is not a tenant of the faith that a priest cannot be married or that a woman cannot be a priest. This is a rule of the church that the Pope could change.

8. Right
I believe in II Cortinthans is where it talks about women and their role's in church. At my church we don't have any women participate in the services at all. Women do other things at the church though like teach Sunday school and other classes and do other programs at the church.

9. Don't expect any change anytime soon
Edited on Fri Jul-15-05 07:01 PM by fberknm
We have Eucharistic Ministers who are female, I have even heard of some female Deacons. I know of married male Deacons, but still the system is well behind.

Unfortunately the church offers little to women as far as a vocation is concerned. Becoming a nun now is not a desirable option for most women. If we look at Mother Teresa's order, The Missionaries of Charity, we see women lined up to enter. They receive a cloth dress, a bucket, a washcloth and a pair of shoes. Yet they do such good work that women are lining up to get in.

Elsewhere it is not so.

10. If there were some way for the Catholic Church to count how many
people it has lost for these very reasons, we'd be surprised by how many that is.

I wonder if Mass at the Anglican Church feels the same.

12. Why Fundies hate Catholics...
For one thing, at least some Baptist churches don't consider Catholics Christian.

I've heard the reason is something to do with Communion, body and blood of Christ, and how it's supposed to be done "In remembrance of me", according to Jesus, but it's said Catholics actually think it's the real blood and body. That's what I've been told. It makes no sense to me. I don't get it.

Fundies are just very twisted people.
