Had an awful argument this evening with a * supporter.

About the war. I met a guy at a bar this evening who, it turned out, was a Navy vet like I am. Both of us were fortunate enough to not have had to participate in Desert Shield or Desert Storm, despite the fact that we were in when they were going on. At any rate, the subject of the current conflict came up and I made my views known and he got really pissed that I dared to disagree with the administration's various justifications for us being over there. He launched into a tirade of all the bad things Saddam did. I reminded him that most of that stuff took place when we supported him. His response was "Well, that's because it was against Iran" Whatever. I then pointed out that we hadn't caught Osama Bin Laden and Afghanistan is a disaster and he just shook his head and walked out of the bar.

Fuck! I hate Bush and all his neo-con cohorts for causing this schism between Americans! I'm a vet, for god's sake!!! I love this country and my fellow citizens and I never thought I'd ever see the day when someone I served with would turn away from me like that. Fuck them!! I'm so saddened by this all I can do is :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:

It's getting real hard for me to drum up any affinity for anyone who just adores him. Thankfully, I have no relatives who think he is doing just swell - so that's a relief.

My dad is a retired career marine DI, my uncle Don also a marine lost his arm in nam and is against this war, my uncle george on my mom's said is navy against and so is my uncle mario navy also. You are not alone.

7. Before you get too depressed

Remember that most Americans now agree the war is "not worth it" and think Bush "misled" America into war. You have more people on your side than you think. The guy at the bar is in the minority.

About a month or two ago Zogby put out a poll saying if you knew Bush lied about war would be for his impeachment and 42% of the public said "yes" and 25% of them were republicans. So you're not alone. I believe the W supporters are still in a minority. I told my dad earlier this week about the Plame/Wilson case and he even agreed that it's a security issue and I told him what Poppy Bush said and how Poppy Bush came out in support of Wilson and that Wilson voted for him (Poppy) in 1992 and not Clinton so it's nothing about politics and my dad voted for W twice. I'm working on him though. ;) My mother went from being a republican to not being a republican and for the first time she's going to vote straight democratic next year.

8. Here's something to help you feel better.

I'm the oldest of four brothers. Me and the brother a year younger served in the Navy in the 70's. He's now a Republican. Voted for Reagean and both Bushes. Every time. Now he regrets it. My youngest brother served the longest, in the Army. He was recalled for Gulf War I, but didn't get deployed, thank whoever you thank. He's totally anti-*.
Youngest brother's son is now in the Air Force. He voted for *. Said he figured he'd "been there, done that." Little Bro and I lit into him. That was last fall. He called recently and admitted he was stupid to listen to the bullshit.
Just as there are going to be knee-jerk * supporters in the general population, you're going to find them among Vets. But I think it's going to get harder.
Some Viet Nam Vets still think that war could have been won.

actually unite more Amerikans than we can imagine. The majortiy of Amerikan people may not be politicaly astute but most are good hearted and given correct info I believe that most of this country would reject the Bush Regime.
