Sonar causing whales to beach.... morons at the controls.....
So... the navy's new and improved sonar (which is necessary since we are still fighting WWII) may be causing mass beachings of whales and dolphins. The training officer says it is crucial that men be trained in the use of this sonar..... now tell me.....

Have these morons ever heard of a SIMULATOR???? I mean, you can put a man in a 747 flight simulator and KNOW if he can or cannot fly that plane.... with all the computational power available to the military.... they cannot come up with a frigging sonar simulator so as to lessen the deaths of whales and dolphins who are most likely being killed by their new and expensive toys????

Shocking.... simply shocking...

1. Well this planet is just to small for all of us, I guess
so we have to bombard whales with sound? I don't know what the sounds do to the poor creatures but I'm guessing that it causes painful vibrations and pressure differences in the cranial area as well as damage the sensitve organs used for echolocation. I just wish these people can use their imagination and feel what it must be like for the whales and dolphins. Empathy is short with these people, they only care for themselves. To hell with Goddess Nature.

Just imagine intense vibrations and pressure in your head to the point that you cand't discern your orientation and you fall unconscious.

5. Ever see that X-Files episode where
That guy's head exploded. There was and ELF surge near where they lived and it affected the ear chambers of any living thing by causing an incredible increase of air pressure in the intercranial cavities. Mulder and Scully went into this deaf woman's house and found that she was the only one alive and unaffected. Weird, I thought that deaf people's ear structures were the same?

Writers... sometimes they put something together knowing that only a few of the thinkers out there will see through their faulty premises.

I missed that episode.... fortunately... :)

10. It was a good episode though I am not an X-Files fan
being a hard of hearing person from birth (so it's suspected since there is genetics as well as infections involved) I am pretty knowledgeable about the structure and audiology of the ear, being that I have visited my ENT and audiologists most of my life and when I saw that I thought it couldn't be. There are different types of causes for deafness but the most common one is neural degradation as one ages and auditory damage done by high decibels sustained over time. (Why so many rock and rollers and workers in high sound areas wear earplugs now.)The ear structure is the same as in a normal hearing person, barring any type of physical trauma such as rupture of the eardrum and such and thus can regulate inter-cranial air pressure as a normal person the only exception is that there is either damage to the cochlea or the nerves.

I have a hole in my right eardrum as a result of a very bad infection, either that or from having tubes in my ears. I can't remember. So my tymphonography (air pressure or measuring the vibrations, I don't know I'll have to ask my audiologist next time I see) is less than what it is in my left ear. The trauma has cause my hearing to go down soem but not significantly much.

11. Some types of Sonar has a kill range for people.
The sound intensity is not to be believed. I have no doubt it is screwing up the whales. It shames me, just another thing a long line of hurts inflicted upon me by my own Country.

3. It is not bad enough that we destroy everything on land......
Edited on Sat Jul-16-05 06:46 PM by Double T
and now we learn we are diving aquatic mammals out of the seas. The earth has been here for some 5 billion years (fundies go back to sleep) and we sure have managed to decimate this planet's environment, natural resources and cohabitant creatures in only the past 200-300 years. I always wonder when humans will realize there is a problem, probably only after it is too late to do anything about it.

4. Well... what brought this up.... is there was a show on I think it was
the OLN network about the beachings... it was very very well done... and it pissed me off to no end. Again I say.. morons at the controls. I'd take on any one of them man to man if I knew it could change their behavior with this extravagant whale killing device.

8. Now watch out who you are calling morons
My husband was a Sonar tech for 20 years and this argument has been going on for a long time. These guys are just doing their jobs, they are not morons. The morons are the ones who make the equipment, and you can call them anything you want.

Just my 2 cents. :patriot:

9. I know the guys actually running the equipment don't make the
decision to use it... I am aiming directly at the bozos who cannot find a way to simulate this, even though the means to do so probably exist in several varying forms.

14. Man and fish can co-exist peacefully
It's whales and them damned dolphins that we (The Empire) must have a problem with.

Not to highjack the thread, but the video of Bu$h using the "Man and fish" line is in this video. It also makes Bu$h out for the puppet he is when it shows how the wire he was wearing in the debates was used- http://www.netsummary.dk/vis?u=/mov/film/george_bush_spindoctor.mpg&t=george+bush+spindoctor
