HUH? Ap Reports: "Mysterious Hot Spot Sparks Fire" Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) -- Scientists are puzzled by a mysterious Los Padres National Forest hot spot where 400-degree ground ignited a wildfire.

"They saw fissures in the ground where they could feel a lot of heat coming out," Los Padres geologist Allen King said. "It was not characteristic of a normal fire."

With the help of an air reconnaissance flight and thermal infrared imaging, scientists found that the hot spot covers about three acres. The hottest spot was 11 feet underground, at 584 degrees.

7. Santa Barbara is a geologically fascinating place.
All the tar on the beach, for instance.

This week I talked with a scientist who is going to present a paper about the phenomenon at the Geophysical Society of America in Salt Lake City, October 16-19. The scientist is Allen King, Southern California Province Geologist for the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, based in Goleta, California. The title of Mr. King's upcoming presentation is: "The Landslide That Caused A Forest Fire: The Study of An Unusual Thermal Anomaly."

It's the strangest thing, because Marfa is literally in the middle of nowhere. The lights have been see for hundreds of years.

I know the pix don't look real, but I've seen the things. They are absoultely strange!
