Yes, Shrub sent hundreds to their swift, GONZALES-expedited deaths, including one of his own Born-Aginners whom he ridiculed without dignity (his OR hers). But WHOM did he find to qualify for his deep-thought "compassion"?--------one of the most notoriously GUILTY serial killers of all time.

He said, "If we're going to send somebody to their death, we've got to be sure they're guilty." (paraphrase from memory) Sound familiar?---sounds like what he's saying about ROVE right now---let the system work, let the investigation play out, etc.

I've been doing some research because this has interested me a bit AND because I don't have much else to do this morning.

It seems that there has been some misunderstandings. According to what I could find (see the link below), * actually pardoned 20 people. Those were not capital offenses. What * did in the Lukas case was commute the sentence.

13. What you have to understand about Texas is...

that the Governor CANNOT pardon anyone or commute a sentence by himself. Probably the only state where that is true.

I don't remember the name of the Governor that caused the problem, but one of them was caught selling pardons out of the back door of the statehouse, so the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles was created.

This board takes clemency appeals and votes on them, sending their opinion to the Governor. I'm not postive, but he might be able to ignore the recommendation and let the original sentnece be carried out, but he definitely cannot pardon or reduce sentences without their approval. The most the Texas Governor can do is call for a 30 day stay of execution while a new appeal is filed.

So, although I am convinced Shrub gets wood at the thought of an execution and wouldn't call one off if it was up to him-- it was never up to him.
