Thomas Jefferson Quotes
"The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first."-- Thomas Jefferson

"I hold it, that a little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical." -- Thomas Jefferson, January 30, 1787

"The issue today is the same as it has been throughout all history, whether man shall be allowed to govern himself or be ruled by a small elite." -- Thomas Jefferson

"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free ... it expects what never was and never will be." -- Thomas Jefferson

4. Not by all of us though.
Madison remains in relative obscurity to an even larger degree. Both have written some great letters and essays.

Viva Thom Hartmann! Now he knows Jefferson.

5. Can't forget Madison
or Thomas Paine either, for that matter.

Part of this is the fact that they don't bother teaching about these guys in school...

My niece's Jr. High spent TWO YEARS talking about African-American History...valuable in its own way, yes, but to the exclusion of the concepts and ideals that founded this country?

Absolutely not.

This sort of thing simply encourages the RW to spin history in its own way, since those educated in the public sector have no information with which to counter it in their own heads.

2. A bit OT but
still related... a quote from the Portland Oregonion:

"Other than telling us how to live, think, marry, pray, vote, invest, educate our children, and now, die, I think the Republicans have done a fine job of getting government out of our personal lives."

3. And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus....
....by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerve in the brain of Jupiter. But may we hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away with this artificial scaffolding, and restore to us the primitive and genuine doctrines of this most venerated reformer of human errors.

-Thomas Jefferson, Letter to John Adams, April 11, 1823

7. Jefferson was a genuine big time genius, IMO. The democrats' democrat.
His words are often insightful, accurate, and prophetic.

I recommend Thom Hartmann's book "What Would Jefferson Do?"
